The Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately 1,127,711.92 km2 (435,412.01 sq mi) and a 2021 census population of 41,070,it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. Its estimated population as of the second quarter of 2024 is 44,920. Yellowknife is the capital,most populous community,and only city in the territory;its population was 20,340 as of the 2021 census. It became the territorial capital in 1967,following recommendations by the Carrothers Commission.

David Harold Eastman is a former public servant from Canberra,Australia. In 1995,he was wrongfully convicted of the murder of Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Colin Winchester and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. A 2014 judicial inquiry recommended the sentence be quashed and he should be pardoned. On 22 August of the same year,the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory quashed the conviction,released Eastman from prison,and ordered a retrial.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is the statutory body responsible for investigating alleged miscarriages of justice in England,Wales,and Northern Ireland. It was established by Section 8 of the Criminal Appeal Act 1995 and began work on 31 March 1997. The commission is the only body in its area of jurisdiction with the power to send a case back to an appeals court if it concludes that there is a real possibility that the court will overturn a conviction or reduce a sentence. Since starting work in 1997,it has on average referred 33 cases a year for appeal.
Prohibition in Canada was a ban on alcoholic beverages that arose in various stages,from local municipal bans in the late 19th century,to provincial bans in the early 20th century,and national prohibition from 1918 to 1920. The relatively large and powerful beer and alcohol manufacturing sector,and the huge working class that purchased their products,failed to convince any of the governments to reverse their stance on prohibition. Calvin Murray Sinclair is a former member of the Canadian Senate and First Nations lawyer who served as chairman of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 2009 to 2015. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW),also known as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and more broadly as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) or Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP),is a human rights crisis of violence against Indigenous women in Canada and the United States,notably those in the Indigenous peoples in Canada and Native American communities,but also amongst other Indigenous peoples such as in Australia and New Zealand,and the grassroots movement to raise awareness of MMIW through organizing marches;building databases of the missing;holding local community,city council,and tribal council meetings;and conducting domestic violence trainings and other informational sessions for police.
Yvonne Boyer is a Canadian lawyer who was named to the Senate of Canada on March 25,2018,as a Senator for Ontario by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. A Métis,Boyer is the first Indigenous person appointed to the Senate from Ontario. She lives in Merrickville,Ontario,near Ottawa.
Anthony Joseph Dolff,was farmer in Kamsack,Saskatchewan,Canada,who was killed in 1993. He was stabbed 17 times,hit on the head with a television,and strangled with a telephone cord. Three Saulteaux people,members of the Keeseekoose First Nation,were convicted of the crime. One,Jason Keshane,14 years old at the time of the crime,confessed to the killing and as a juvenile was sentenced to two years in prison for second degree murder. His cousins,sisters Nerissa and Odelia Quewezance,19 and 21 at the time,were sentenced to life in prison. Neither confessed and both have maintained their innocence at all times. Dolff had been a maintenance man at the residential school the two sisters attended. That night they reportedly drank a great deal of liquor and took prescription sleeping pills at Dolff's house,where he pestered them for sex. When he discovered that Odelia had taken money from his bedroom,a violent confrontation took place,in the course of which he was killed.
