The British Muslim Awards are an annual award ceremony that honours the success and achievements of British Muslim individuals, groups and businesses. It was established in 2013.
The British Muslim Awards was founded by Oceanic Consulting. [1] The event honours the success, achievements and contribution of Britain's Muslim individuals, groups and businesses and highlights the significant role Muslims play in contributing to a better Great Britain. [2] [3] [4] [5]
It recognises the achievements of Muslim men and women at the forefront of their communities and industries [6] [7] celebrating the success of individuals, community groups and businesses, highlighting their achievements [8] and recognising various aspects of British society including business, charity, sport, arts, and culture. [9]
From October 2012, nominations were encouraged through social media. [10] Following 10,000 nominations nationally, the finalists for the inaugural British Muslim Awards were announced. [11] [12]
The first national British Muslim Awards event took place on 29 January 2013 at the Sheridan Suite in Manchester. The awards were presented by Tasmina Ahmed Sheikh of Hamilton Burns Solicitors and co-hosted by entrepreneur and philanthropist Zulfi Hussain. [2] The Islamic Bank of Britain was the headline sponsor for the event. [1] The awards ceremony was attended by 600 people. [13]
The event also raised money for Mosaic, the largest multi-cause charitable enterprise in the United Kingdom. Founded by Prince Charles in 2007, Mosaic's mentoring programmes create opportunities for young people growing up in the most deprived communities. [6] [7]

On 14 January 2014, the finalists were announced. [14] [15] The second awards event was held on 31 January 2014 at the Salford City Stadium. The awards were presented by Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh OBE of Hamilton Burns WS and welcomed over 400 attendees. [8] [16] [17]
The event also raised money for The Well Foundation. Set up in 2008, The Well Foundation aims to raise money to build wells, install hand pumps and establish health and sanitation programs to provide accessible clean water to the stricken regions of the world. [8] [16]

On 27 January 2015, the third annual awards event presented by Al Rayan Bank (formerly known as Islamic Bank of Britain) was held at the Chateau Impney Hotel in Worcestershire. Over 400 people attended the ceremony, which was presented by award-winning TV chef, Ajmal Mushtaq. The event raised £1500 for The Well Foundation. [21]

On 28 January 2016, the fourth annual British Muslim Awards presented by Al Rayan Bank was held at the Holiday Inn Birmingham City Centre. The event was hosted by presenter Inayat Kanji and was a celebration of success, with around 400 guests. [22]

On 25 January 2017, the fifth annual British Muslim Awards took place where the winners were announced at the Athena Hotel in Leicester. The evening was hosted by the television presenter and broadcaster journalist Samina Kiyani and the presenter, actor and voiceover artist Inayat Kanji. The celebration was welcomed over 400 guests. The awards also raised money for the National Zakat Foundation. [23] [24]

Deeyah Khan is a Norwegian documentary film director and human rights activist of Punjabi/Pashtun descent. Islam Channel is a UK-based, free-to-air, English language, Islamic-focused satellite television channel and online media platform funded by advertising and donations. It was founded in 2004 by Mohamed Ali Harrath, a Tunisian activist and businessman; his son, Mohamed Harrath, is now its chief executive officer. It was reported in 2008 that UK government research found that 59% of British Muslims watched the channel. It broadcasts across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and is streamed live on the internet. Islam Channel began broadcasting in March 2004 on Sky Digital channel 836, but subsequently moved to channel 813, then 806, now 737. In April 2010, it launched on Freesat channel 693. In 2015, Islam Channel Urdu was launched. In 2017, both channels launched on Virgin Media; Islam Channel can be watched on 838 and Islam Channel Urdu on 839. In 2018, Islam Channel Urdu was subsequently moved to channel 851, then 766, now 755. On 18 October 2022, Islam Channel Bangla was launched on Sky 784.

Britain's Got Talent is a televised British talent show competition, and part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. Presented by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, it is produced by both Thames and Syco Entertainment, distributed by Fremantle, and broadcast on ITV every year in late Spring to early Summer. The show was originally intended for production in 2005, but filming was suspended in the wake of a dispute between ITV and the programme's originally planned host. Believer Book Award is an American literary award presented yearly by The Believer magazine to novels and story collections, nonfiction books or essay collections, poetry collections, and, beginning in 2021, works of graphic narrative the magazine's editors thought were the "strongest and most under-appreciated" of the year. The Aurealis Awards are presented annually by the Australia-based Chimaera Publications and WASFF to published works in order to "recognise the achievements of Australian science fiction, fantasy, horror writers". To qualify, a work must have been first published by an Australian citizen or permanent resident between 1 January and 31 December of the corresponding year; the presentation ceremony is held the following year. It has grown from a small function of around 20 people to a two-day event attended by over 200 people.
Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh OBE WS NP is a Scottish politician, serving as chair of the Alba Party since 2021. She was also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ochil and South Perthshire from 2015 to 2017. A former member of the Scottish Conservatives, Labour, and the Scottish National Party (SNP), Ahmed-Sheikh served as the SNP's Trade and Investment spokesperson, Deputy Shadow Leader of the House in the House of Commons, and the SNP's National Women's and Equalities Convener. A solicitor and businessperson, and a former actress, Ahmed-Sheikh founded and formerly chaired the Scottish Asian Women's Association.
