Bujji and Bhairava (stylized onscreen as B&B: Bujji and Bhairava) is an Indian Telugu-language animated science fiction comedy television miniseries created and directed by Nag Ashwin and, written by Sahen Upadhyay. [1] It is produced by Vyjayanthi Animation and Green Gold Animation. The series is a prelude to the 2024 film Kalki 2898 AD , and has a narrative primarily about Bhairava and his AI droid/vehicle companion BU-JZ-1 (Bujji). [2]

Contents

The series is part of The Kalki Cinematic Universe and premiered on 31 May 2024 on Amazon Prime Video. [3] The show emerged as the most-watched Telugu show in India, in the first 6 months of 2024, with 49 lakhs (4.9 million) views. [4]

Overview

The series is set two years before the events of the film in the year 2896, in Kasi. [a] Bhairava is a bounty hunter with dreams of getting into the Complex, an inverted pyramid structure located in the heart of the city, by collecting a million 'units' needed for gaining access inside. [b] BU-JZ1 is an AI pilot of a cargo plane, waiting for her promotion at the Complex. At their lowest point, these two unlikely souls, find each other to set of a crackling story of ambition, adventure, partnership, and mainly friendship.

Release

The show was released on 31 May 2024 on Amazon Prime Video in Telugu along with Hindi and English language versions. [9]

Reception

Giving a positive response, Neeshita Nyayapati of Hindustan Times , praised Nag Ashwin's work and the screenplay. [10] Echoing the same, The Hindu's Sangeetha Devi Dundoo opined that the series has succeeded in introducing the world of Kalki and the franchise. [11]

The genre of science fiction has been prevalent in the Indian film industry since the second half of the 20th century. Beginning in 1952, the English-Tamil film Kaadu was made, which was an Indian-American co-production. The 1963 Tamil film Kalai Arasi, 1965 Telugu film Dorikithe Dongalu, and 1967 Hindi film Chand Par Chadayee also have science fiction in their storyline. The Alien was a science fiction film under production in the late 1960s which was eventually cancelled. The film was being directed by Bengali Indian director Satyajit Ray and produced by Hollywood studio Columbia Pictures. Kalki 2898 AD is the soundtrack album composed by Santhosh Narayanan to the 2024 Indian Telugu-language epic dystopian science fiction action film of the same name, directed by Nag Ashwin, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas and Deepika Padukone. The lyrics are written by Ramajogayya Sastry, Chandrabose and Krishna Kanth in Telugu, Kumaar and Siddharth-Garima in Hindi, Vivek in Tamil, Varadaraj Chikkaballapura in Kannada and Shyam Muraleedharan in Malayalam. Being Narayanan's 50th film as a composer in his career, the soundtrack album which consisted of six songs was released on 10 July 2024.
