An augmented core pilot is drinking at a bar. He communicates with an AI augment implanted in his brain, who tells him he needs someone to talk with, before alerting him to an incoming job. He suits up in a large mechanical suit and engages two other core pilots. He and the AI discuss the other pilots' remarkable synchronicity as he disables both mechs before continuing towards the target. He engages three more pilots, who are also incredibly skilled; he disables the heavy mech with a surprise attack and barely destroys the others by collapsing a tunnel. The pilot reaches his target, but is surprised to find a lab similar to the one where he was augmented. The AI realizes that the target was the other pilots, who are augmented like the pilot even though the technology was supposed to have been lost, and believes that the other pilots were not trying to kill them. The final enemy pilot asks for assistance, but the pilot crushes his skull with his mech, insisting that "no one is like me."

O is a delivery cyclist, dangerously weaving through traffic to make her delivery deadline. The glasses she wears overlay score and path and her timer, showing a heavily gamified world. She makes the delivery just in the nick of time, only to be rewarded with a virtual skin for her bike of simply burnt orange, despite the bike already being orange. Buddibot, her hovering pet and assistant, tries to convince her the value of the skin. A mysterious stranger appears, and gives her a package with a handwritten address. Buddibot warns her not to take it, but she does, revealing a small blue glowing starfish like creature referred to as a Conduit. Despite Buddibot's protestation, she can't free herself from the Conduit, and verifies it is real by peering under her glasses. Helldivers appear in the street in front of her, demanding she surrender the Conduit, but she flees. The Conduit transforms her bicycle into a sleek motorcycle reminiscent of a Playstation, until she's intercepted by a Colossus and Kratos. The Conduit transforms her motorcycle into a flying vehicle, and Buddibot, who was left behind after being hit by traffic, transforms and summons the other ubiquitous buddibots to kill her for breach of contract. She makes it to the address, which is shown to be her childhood home and she exits, the world now populated by Playstation properties, including Journey and Little Big Planet. The stranger is shown to be her friend Johnny, and O agrees to play again with him, the motorcycle reappearing and Johnny transforming into the Colossus again.

Production

Secret Level was created by Tim Miller, who executive produces at his company Blur Studio. Blur Studio serves as a production company along with Amazon MGM Studios. Dave Wilson serves as executive producer and supervising director. The series was ordered by Amazon Prime Video on August 14, 2024. [5]

After production but before series release, Concord had come out but was pulled from sale within two weeks by Sony due to low sales and player counts. Miller stated that they did not consider pulling the Concord episode, in part to respect the work that had already been put into it, and that some of the other episodes featured games that had yet to be released. [6]

On December 17, 2024, the series was renewed for a second season. [7]

A character resembling actor Keanu Reeves who appears in the Armored Core episode gained media attention when the series was revealed. His casting was officially confirmed in October 2024.

The series was announced during Gamescom on August 20, 2024. A trailer was released at the event, which featured segments from each of the episodes. [1] [9]

The pilot who features in the Armored Core episode was the subject of media attention and speculation due to his resemblance to actor Keanu Reeves. [10] [11] Though Prime Video declined to disclose casting information at the time of the announcement, ComicBook.com reported an influx of "nearly nothing but replies about Reeves and his potential appearance in [the series]" under a post by Armored Core's social media account. [12] IGN 's Wesley Yin-Poole said that were it not really Reeves, the actor could claim a royalty payment due to the certainty of the character's likeness to his. [13] GamesRadar+ 's Ali Jones remarked that while the shot could have been "simply be an ethnically ambiguous man with similar facial hair", they noted the likeness, and doubted that Armored Core would place the image so prominently on their social media account if it were "just some random actor" and not Reeves. [14]

In October 2024 Reeves's casting was officially revealed alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, Heaven Hart, Gabriel Luna, Ariana Greenblatt, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Michael Beach, Emily Swallow, and Claudia Doumit. [8]

A video game that continues the story of the Pac-Man episode, titled Shadow Labyrinth , is scheduled for release in 2025. [15]

Release

The series premiered its first part worldwide on December 10, 2024. [16] with a second part releasing on December 17, 2024. [8]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Secret Level has an approval rating of 69% based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 6.1/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Secret Level's melange of video game shorts can't help but feel like a glorified sizzle reel, but these vignettes pack a mean punch in small doses." [17] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 53 out of 100 based on nine critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. [18] Steven Nguyen Scaife of IGN said the show "struggles to find satisfying stories for a short-form anthology" in a 5/10 review and felt dissatisfied by the selection of the source material. [19] Aramide Tinubu of Variety wrote that "the show acts as poorly written AI summaries of massive tales". [20]

Accolades

The series was nominated at the 23rd Visual Effects Society Awards in the category of Outstanding Animated Character in an Episode, Commercial, Game Cinematic, or Real-Time Project. [21]
