Bukoba is a city with a population of 144,938 (2022 census), [2] situated in the north west of Tanzania on the south western shores of Lake Victoria. It is the capital of the Kagera region, and the administrative seat for Bukoba Urban District.

Contents

The city is served by Bukoba Airport and regular ferry connections to and from Mwanza, as well as roads to Uganda's Rakai District for cross-border commuters. Plans are underway for a standard gauge railway to Uganda.

History

Bukoba City

Situated on the south western shores of Lake Victoria, Bukoba lies only 1 degree south of the Equator.

Bukoba is situated at the South Western shores of Lake Victoria in the north western region of Tanzania. The regional capital and Kagera's biggest town is the gateway to the region.

Ports

Bukoba is currently Tanzania's second largest port on Lake Victoria after Mwanza. [3]

Utility

Bukoba is served by the National Electric Utility Company TANESCO. [4]

Economy

Kagera's Regional Commissioner resides and has his head office in The Bukoba Central Business District. [5]

Bukoba is the leading district in Tanzania with high percent of people with middle class incomes.Percent of people living under poverty lines is the lowest in the country. Bukoba has new mall named Bakwata Complex that will start operation in September 2024.

The city is flat and compact, forming a bowl as it is surrounded by hills. The town has a bus stand, [6] a big airport [7] and a port [8] with a ferry that used to travel from Bukoba via Kemondo bay port to Mwanza on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, and soon a newly built Ship which is the second Largest Lake Ship in Africa will make ferry voyages to Bukoba daily. The Airport [7] is located south east of the city. The address on Sokoine Road.

Auric Air [9] flies three times a day to Mwanza. In 2010 the airport [10] was being extended as more flights were expected in line with capacity growth milestones of The Air Terminal reviewed after published reports every quarter of the year. [11] Air Tanzania (ATCL) also have scheduled flights to Bukoba throughout the week with connecting flights through Mwanza to Dar es Salaam

Transport

Bus

Bus Station [12] leaves for Kampala at 7 am every day (about 6 hours) and from Kampala for Bukoba at 11 am every day. It boasts a white sandy beach, a large market, [5] a port [3] tennis courts [13] and a swimming pool. [13] It has 13 banks, [14] 5 of which take VISA cards in the ATM.

Bukoba Town itself has the status of a municipal Council. It has a municipal Director and other local government officials like other district councils in the region.

Sports

Bukoba is represented in the Tanzanian Premier League by football club Kagera Sugar. It is the home to several charities - including SHARE in Africa and Jambo Bukoba. Both are focused on the educational sector.

The Kaitaba Stadium [15] is also found in south east of Bukoba on Jamhuri Road. The stadium has the capacity of 15000 people and supports football games day and night

Climate

Bukoba has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen Am) although it is milder than most climates with that classification due to altitude. It can sometimes get cool especially in the evenings during the two rainy seasons, but never as cold as the winter season in Europe. [16]

Transport in Tanzania includes road, rail, air and maritime networks. The road network is 86,472 kilometres (53,731 mi) long, of which 12,786 kilometres (7,945 mi) is classified as trunk road and 21,105 kilometres (13,114 mi) as regional road. The rail network consists of 3,682 kilometres (2,288 mi) of track. Commuter rail service is in Dar es Salaam only. The Haya are a Bantu ethnic group based in Kagera Region, northwestern Tanzania, on the western side of Lake Victoria. With over one million people, it is estimated the Haya make up approximately 4% of the population of Tanzania. Historically, the Haya have had a complex kingship-based political system. Agriculture, particularly banana farming, is central to Haya economic life. They are credited with the independent development of carbon steel dating to 2000 years ago using pre-heating techniques.

The Ibanda-Kyerwa National Park, previously Ibanda Game Reserve, is a national park in Tanzania. Originally established in 1974, it was designated a national park in 2019. The national park is located in Kagera Region and has an area of 200 square kilometres (77 sq mi). The park is rich in wildlife attractions and sunrise and sunset are easily seen. Animals found in this national park include hippos, antelopes, Thomson gazelles, impalas, elands, and baboons. The park can be reached by flight from Dar es Salaam Airport to Bukoba Airport and then by road from Bukoba town to the park.

Marine Services Company Limited (MSCL) is a Tanzanian company that operates ferries, cargo ships and tankers on three of the African Great Lakes, namely Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyasa. It provides services to neighbouring Burundi, DR Congo, Zambia and Malawi.

Precision Air Flight 494 (PW494) was a scheduled domestic passenger flight within Tanzania, from Julius Nyerere International Airport to Bukoba Airport via Mwanza Airport. On 6 November 2022, the ATR 42–500 plane crashed in Lake Victoria while attempting to land at Bukoba during bad weather and low visibility conditions. Nineteen people were killed, including both pilots who drowned before rescue workers could reach them.
