The Caledonian Railway 956 Class were 3-cylinder 4-6-0 steam locomotives that were used on the Caledonian Railway from 1921. They were built to the design of William Pickersgill. At the time they were the largest design operated by a Scottish railway.

Problems

The locomotives were large and visually very impressive, but they were not successful and never really got established in traffic. One author has described them as "that monumental flop of all time", another as "ineffectual giants".

Draughting was a problem from the beginning, and firemen had a lot of trouble keeping them up to pressure. There were other troubles thought to be a result of too small an ashpan causing choking of the grate. However, the chief problem was the failure of the unusual derived motion design. The valve gear was insufficiently robust and the valve spindle guides (originally cast iron) had to be replaced in cast steel, but this did not address the fundamental shortcomings of the design and the performance of these large locomotives remained woeful. By early 1922 management decided things could not be left alone and in April of that year No.s 957 and 958 were rebuilt to the strange arrangement of Walschaerts valve gears for the outside cylinders and Stephenson link motion for the inside one. At the same time No. 959 was given a modified version of the standard Caledonian equipment but with dashpots added to absorb stress that was thought to exist at some points. No. 956 was first given a different variation of the standard arrangement, then brought into line with No. 959, but by the end of 1922 both had been altered again, this time to the same mixed gear arrangement as 957/958. It would have been difficult to retrofit Walschaerts gear to the inside cylinder (because there would be no mounting-point for the combination lever) but it seems strange that a modified Walschaerts gear was not used. It would have been possible to add a second eccentric to drive the combination lever.

None of the changes seems to have achieved very much. Experienced locomotive engineers have expressed astonishment and disbelief at the "cacophony" that the mixed valve gear gave rise to, and many have stated that the whole idea was a disaster.

Withdrawal

Despite their larger size they were capable of no better work than the preceding 60 class (which did not have a sparkling reputation themselves), and the allocation of power class '5P' by the LMS was hardly deserved. Within a few years they had been relegated to freight traffic. [3] Being a non-standard class of only four locomotives the LMS showed no interest in rebuilding them further and they were all withdrawn between 1931 and 1936.

The Caledonian Railway 60 Class were 4-6-0 passenger engines designed by William Pickersgill and introduced in 1916. Six were built by the Caledonian Railway at its own St. Rollox works in 1916–17, and all of them passed into LMS ownership in 1923. A further twenty locomotives of a slightly modified design were built by the LMS under the auspices of George Hughes in the period of 1925–1926.

The Highland Railway's Clan Class was a class of passenger 4-6-0 steam locomotives designed by Christopher Cumming. The design is derived from that of the slightly earlier Clan Goods although the similarity is more visual than real. The first four were built in 1919, and the remaining four in 1921.

The Caledonian Railway 72 Class was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotives introduced by William Pickersgill for the Caledonian Railway (CR) in 1920. Thirty-two locomotives were built and all survived to be taken over by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1923 and by British Railways (BR) in 1948. The earlier 113 Class, of which 16 were produced, were similar but slightly smaller. These were the Caledonian's last express passenger locomotives, and technically, the last of the Dunalastair series, and were unofficially dubbed, Dunalastair V.

The cylinder is the power-producing element of the steam engine powering a steam locomotive. The cylinder is made pressure-tight with end covers and a piston; a valve distributes the steam to the ends of the cylinder. Cylinders were initially cast iron, but later made of steel. The cylinder casting includes other features such as valve ports and mounting feet. The last big American locomotives incorporated the cylinders as part of huge one-piece steel castings that were the main frame of the locomotive. Renewable wearing surfaces were needed inside the cylinders and provided by cast-iron bushings.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Holcroft valve gear</span>

The Holcroft valve gear was a type of conjugated valve gear designed and patented by Harold Holcroft and used on three-cylinder steam locomotives of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SECR). It bore many similarities to the Gresley conjugated valve gear, which it predated, as eventually used on all Gresley's three cylinder designs. It varied from the Gresley method of operation by using the combination lever assembly instead of the valve spindles to drive the middle cylinder of a three-cylinder design. This had operational advantages over Gresley's design, namely eliminating the problems of flexure, bush wear and the influence of heat in the valve spindles.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">L&YR Class 3</span>

The L&YR Class 3 was a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotives of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway introduced in 1891 with forty being built. George Hughes rebuilt six locomotives with superheaters between 1908 and 1909, they were later designated L&YR Class 4. All passed to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at the grouping in 1923 but were withdrawn by 1930.

The Caledonian Railway 179 Class and 184 Class were 4-6-0 mixed-traffic locomotives designed by John F. McIntosh and built in two batches in 1913–14 and 1914–15 respectively, at the Caledonian Railway's own St. Rollox Works. The differences between the two batches were minor, and they are often considered to be a single class.
