The Caltrain Centralized Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility (CEMOF) is a train maintenance yard and facility located to the north of San Jose Diridon Station in Central San Jose, California. The $140 million maintenance station began construction in 2004 and opened in 2007, consolidating much of Caltrain's maintenance and operations into one location. [1] [2] [3]
Planning for CEMOF started in the late 1980s under Caltrans; up to that point, light maintenance was being performed at yards in San Francisco and San Jose, and heavier maintenance required transporting equipment to Roseville, a trip that took two days each way. [4] The only maintenance pit was in San Jose, just a single car length long. All locomotive maintenance was performed in Oakland, and wheels were resurfaced at an Amtrak shop in Wilmington, Delaware. [5] Consolidating operations into a single facility was estimated to reduce annual costs by $425,000 to $530,000 for transportation. [4]
Work on the US$140 million project began in October 2004, with US$105.8 million coming from federal funding and US$8.2 million from state funding. [1] The construction phase of the facility lasted approximately three years; preliminary work completed in 2005 included relocation of existing rail lines and utilities, a 1,800-foot long (550 m) wall to attenuate construction noise, and a tunnel to link the maintenance facilities with the east yard. Work on the new buildings and facilities began in summer 2005. [6] On September 29, 2007, Caltrain held a grand opening ceremony. [3] The first shift of maintenance and operations crew did not move into the new shop until October 21, followed by the second and third shifts in November. The last component of this yard, the fueling storage and station, [7] was completed in Spring 2008. [1]
To accommodate maintenance requirements for the new Stadler KISS electric multiple units (EMUs) being procured as part of the Caltrain Modernization Program, CEMOF was modified starting in 2019. Modifications included the extension of the existing Service and Inspection Pit, allowing the underside of a seven-car EMU train to be inspected without repositioning; adding moveable platforms inside the shop for inspection and maintenance of roof-mounted equipment; adding pantograph inspection cameras to inspect each car at least once a day; and building a temporary storage facility for EMU parts while the current warehouse is occupied by parts for the diesel-based fleet. Caltrain's CEMOF replaced an old 22-acre (8.9 ha) Southern Pacific Railroad maintenance yard formerly located on the same site. The entire facility includes a central control building, a three floor, 58,800-square-foot (5,500 m2) maintenance shop building, a machine to wash trains, one 3,000 sq ft (279 m2) water treatment plant, a fueling station and railroad tracks for train storage. [1] About 150 people work at the site and three shifts of workers keep the facility staffed at all times. [9]
The Train Washer is an automated washing machine that cleans the exterior of half of Caltrain's fleet each day or at least twice a week, up from twice a year before the facility. [1] [9] The machine can clean a five-car train in about 25 minutes using water from two 35,000 US gallons (132,000 L) cisterns. [9] The water used in the cleaning process is processed through the Wastewater Treatment Unit and 80% is reused to wash another train. [1] The Washer is located to the northwest of the maintenance shop. [9]
The Shop Building contains a bridge crane with a lifting capacity of 25,000 pounds (11,000 kg), a drop table to facilitate wheel maintenance, and a wheel truing facility. [9] This new building improves servicing conditions, safety, and efficiency by allowing mechanics to work indoors rather than outdoors. [6] [10] In addition, Caltrain can perform maintenance tasks once conducted by out-of-state contractors, [7] such as wheel-truing. [1]
Daily repair tasks are carried out in the Service & Inspection Area, consisting of an outdoor facility with two pits each 800 feet (240 m) long and 6 feet (1.8 m) deep. [7] There are two tracks that traverse the facility. [9] In Spring 2008, a 70,000 US gal (265,000 L) fuel tank was installed there to facilitate on-site fueling; [5] prior to its installation, refueling trains was performed by bringing tanker trucks alongside the trains. [7] The Service & Inspection Area is located immediately adjacent to the northeast of the three-story Shop Building. [9]
The train maintenance facilities are separated from the east yard area by active railroad tracks, so a 250-foot long (76 m) tunnel was built to facilitate employee movement under the active tracks. [1] Work on the east yard area, which contains the Loading Dock, Central Control Facility (housing railroad dispatchers and controllers), and modular buildings for conductors and engineers, began in June 2006. Caltrain is a commuter rail line in California, serving the San Francisco Peninsula and Santa Clara Valley. The southern terminus is in San Jose at the Tamien station with weekday rush hour service running as far as Gilroy. The northern terminus of the line is in San Francisco at 4th and King Street. Caltrain has express, limited, and local services. There are 28 regular stops, one limited-service weekday-only stop, one weekend and holiday-only stop (Broadway), and one stop that is only served on football game days (Stanford). While average weekday ridership in 2019 exceeded 63,000, impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have been significant: in June 2024, Caltrain had an average weekday ridership of 24,580 passengers.

A rail yard, railway yard, railroad yard (US) or simply yard, is a series of tracks in a rail network for storing, sorting, or loading and unloading rail vehicles and locomotives. Yards have many tracks in parallel for keeping rolling stock or unused locomotives stored off the main line, so that they do not obstruct the flow of traffic. Cars or wagons are moved around by specially designed yard switcher locomotives (US) or shunter locomotives (UK), a type of locomotive. Cars or wagons in a yard may be sorted by numerous categories, including railway company, loaded or unloaded, destination, car type, or whether they need repairs. Yards are normally built where there is a need to store rail vehicles while they are not being loaded or unloaded, or are waiting to be assembled into trains. Santa Clara Transit Center is a railway station in downtown Santa Clara, California. It is served by Caltrain, Amtrak Capitol Corridor, and Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) trains. It is the planned terminus for the Silicon Valley BART extension into Santa Clara County on the future Green and Orange Lines. The former station building, constructed in 1863 by the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad, is used by the Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History.
Bayshore station is a Caltrain commuter rail station in the Visitacion Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The station is on the border of San Francisco and the neighboring city of Brisbane. The parking lot and the northern section of the station are in San Francisco, while the remainder is in Brisbane. The station address is in San Francisco proper.
Jolimont Workshops was a railway workshop operated by the Victorian Railways beside Jolimont Yard, near the Melbourne CBD, Australia. Opened in 1917 and dedicated to the maintenance and repair of electric multiple units and locomotives, it was the first part of the yard to be closed and relocated, with demolition completed in 1994. The site is now part of the Melbourne Park tennis complex.
A coaling tower, coal stage, coaling plant or coaling station is a facility used to load coal as fuel into railway steam locomotives. Coaling towers were often sited at motive power depots or locomotive maintenance shops.
County Yard is a rail yard complex comprising Adams Yard, Delco Lead, and the eponymous County Yard along the Northeast Corridor (NEC). The complex straddles the New Brunswick and North Brunswick border in Central New Jersey.
Hillcrest Complex, the Toronto Transit Commission's largest facility, is responsible for most of the maintenance work on the system's surface vehicles, including heavy overhauls, repairs, and repainting. It is located adjacent to the intersection of Bathurst Street and Davenport Road. The site is also home to the TTC's Transit Control Centre, but the operational headquarters of the organization remains at the McBrien Building, at 1900 Yonge Street.
The Caltrain Express Program (CTX) was implemented from 2002 to 2004 to establish the Baby Bullet express service, which shortened the transit time on the Caltrain commuter rail line between San Francisco and San Jose, and certain stations in between. New locomotives and rolling stock were purchased for dedicated express service, bypassing most stations; quad-track overtake sections were added in two locations along the Peninsula Corridor right-of-way to allow express trains to pass slower local trains that were making all stops; tracks were also upgraded with continuous-welded rail; a centralized traffic control system was added; and crossovers were added every few miles to allow single-tracking trains around disabled trains. Congresswoman Jackie Speier, then serving as a California State Senator, is credited with securing the funding for CTX and one of the new locomotives acquired for the project is named for her as a result. During commute hours, the Baby Bullet went up to 20 percent faster than driving south from San Francisco to San Jose. On September 21, 2024, with the completion of the Caltrain modernization project and the transition to electrified trains, the Baby Bullet was renamed as simply the Express service.
The Caltrain Modernization Program (CalMod), sometimes referred to as the Caltrain Electrification Project, was a $2.44 billion project which added a positive train control (PTC) system and electrified the main line of the U.S. commuter railroad Caltrain, which serves cities in the San Francisco Peninsula and Silicon Valley. The electrification included installation of a 25 kV catenary system over the double-tracked line from San Francisco to San Jose, and acquisition of new rolling stock, consisting of Stadler KISS double-decker electric multiple units (EMU). Caltrain is transitioning from its legacy push-pull trains hauled by diesel-electric locomotives, most of which have been in service since 1985.
The Bayshore Cutoff is the rail line between San Francisco and San Bruno along the eastern shore of the San Francisco Peninsula. It was completed by Southern Pacific (SP) in 1907 at a cost of $7 million, and included five tunnels, four of which are still used by Caltrain, the successor to Southern Pacific's Peninsula Commute service. Fill from the five tunnels was used to build the Visitacion or Bayshore Yard, the main SP classification yard near the city of Brisbane. The Del Monte was similarly rerouted over the line at some point in its operational history.
The Southern California Railway Museum, formerly known as the Orange Empire Railway Museum, is a railroad museum in Perris, California, United States. It was founded in 1956 at Griffith Park in Los Angeles before moving to the former Pinacate Station as the "Orange Empire Trolley Museum" in 1958. It was renamed "Orange Empire Railway Museum" in 1975 after merging with a museum then known as the California Southern Railroad Museum, and adopted its current name in 2019. The museum also operates a heritage railroad on the museum grounds and on a right of way into Downtown Perris, CA.
The Monterey County Rail Extension is a planned commuter rail extension that would bring Caltrain passenger service south of its existing Gilroy, California terminus to Salinas in Monterey County, using the existing Coast Line owned by Union Pacific (UPRR). Implementation of the rail extension will occur over three phases, starting from Salinas and moving north. When construction is complete, there will be four trains operated over the extended line per weekday: two northbound trains that depart from Salinas and travel to San Francisco in the morning, and two southbound trains that return to Salinas in the afternoon.
