The Gironde is a navigable estuary, in southwest France and is formed from the meeting of the rivers Dordogne and Garonne just downstream of the centre of Bordeaux. Covering around 635 km2 (245 sq mi), it is the largest estuary in western Europe.
Bordeaux Métropole is the métropole, an intercommunal structure, centred on the city of Bordeaux. It is located in the Gironde department, in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, in South West France. It was created in January 2015, replacing the previous Communauté urbaine de Bordeaux. Its population was 774,929 in 2014, of which 250,776 in Bordeaux proper.
Royan is a commune and town in the south-west of France, in the department of Charente-Maritime in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its inhabitants are known as Royannais and Royannaises. Capital of the Côte de Beauté, Royan is one of the main French Atlantic coastal resort towns, and has five beaches, a marina for over 1,000 boats, and an active fishing port. As of 2013, the population of the greater urban area was 48,982. The town had 18,393 inhabitants in 2015.
Pessac is a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is a member of the metropolis of Bordeaux, being the second-largest suburb of Bordeaux and located just southwest of it. Pessac is also home to the Montesquieu University, the Bordeaux Montaigne University, and the Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux.
The arrondissement of Bordeaux is an arrondissement of France in the Gironde department in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region. It has 82 communes. Originally much larger, it lost the four cantons of Arcachon, Audenge, Belin-Béliet and La Teste-de-Buch to the new arrondissement of Arcachon in December 2006. In 2009 it lost the canton of Saint-André-de-Cubzac to the arrondissement of Blaye, the cantons of Cadillac and Podensac to the arrondissement of Langon and the canton of Castelnau-de-Médoc to the arrondissement of Lesparre-Médoc.
The arrondissement of Lesparre-Médoc is an arrondissement of France in the Gironde department in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region. It has 50 communes. In 2009 it absorbed the canton of Castelnau-de-Médoc from the arrondissement of Bordeaux.

Sud Ouest is a daily French newspaper, the third largest regional daily in France in terms of circulation. It was created in Bordeaux, on August 29, 1944, by Jacques Lemoine, as a successor to La Petite Gironde. In 1949, the Sunday edition, Sud Ouest Dimanche was launched. Sud Ouest covers the Gironde, the Charente, the Charente-Maritime, the Dordogne, the Pyrénées Atlantiques and the Lot et Garonne départements. It is owned by the Groupe Sud Ouest, which was directed by Jacques Lemoine from 1944 to 1968, and by his son Jean-François Lemoine from 1968 to 2001. The president of the group since February 2008 has been Pierre Jeantet. 80% of the group belongs to the Lemoine family, 10% to the journalists, and the remaining 10% to the staff. The paper circulation is around 300,000 copies.
