Cascade is the third studio album by British electronic musician Sam Shepherd under the alias Floating Points. It was released on 13 September 2024 through Ninja Tune and received universal acclaim from critics. [6] The album topped the UK Dance Albums Chart. [7]
Cascade is Floating Points' first solo studio album since Crush (2019). [8] He collaborated with Pharoah Sanders and London Symphony Orchestra on Promises (2021). [9] He then created his first ballet score, Mere Mortals, in collaboration with San Francisco Ballet. [10] Cascade was inspired by his hometown of Manchester. [11] The song "Afflecks Palace" refers to an emporium in the city. [12] The song "Key103" takes its title from a Manchester radio station. [13] The album's cover art was created by Akiko Nakayama. [14] "Vocoder", "Birth4000", "Del Oro", "Key103", and "Ocotillo" were released as singles from the album. [15] [16]

According to the review aggregator Metacritic , Cascade received "universal acclaim" based on a weighted average score of 83 out of 100 from 13 critic scores. [6]
Brandon Miller of PopMatters commented that "Across nine tracks, Floating Points guides listeners through a series of self-reflective passages and hard club drops, suitable for both sweaty dance floors and moments of existential solitude." [22] Robin Murray of Clash stated, "an autobiographical paean to club culture, it acts as a window of insight into his electronic imagination, while also slapping hard." [18] Paul Simpson of AllMusic called it "yet another marvelous Floating Points album, and easily the most successful work he's made as a dance producer." [17] Krystal Rodriguez of Billboard stated, "A collection of unconventional club bangers, it pulses with twitchy textures, glistening melodies, synth freak-outs and gravelly drums." [24]

Ninja Tune is an independent record label based in London, with a satellite office in Los Angeles. It was founded in 1990 by Matt Black and Jonathan More, professionally known as the electronic duo "Coldcut" The label was established as an outlet for Coldcut to explore a style distinct from from that of the mainstream music industry.
Simon Green, known by his stage name Bonobo, is an English musician, producer, and DJ based in Los Angeles. He debuted with a trip hop aesthetic and has since explored more upbeat approaches as well as jazz and world music influences. His electronic sound incorporates the use of organic instrumentation and is recreated by a full band in live performances.
Samuel Shepherd, known professionally as Floating Points, is a British electronic music producer, DJ, and musician. He is the founder of Pluto Records, co-founder of Eglo Records and leader of a 16-piece group called Floating Points Ensemble. He took over the 6 Music Artist in Residence radio slot on July 15, 2024.
Elaenia is the debut studio album by British electronic musician Sam Shepherd, released under his alias Floating Points on 6 November 2015 by Shepherd's own Pluto label and Luaka Bop. Shepherd created the artwork for the album by connecting fibre-optic cables to a home made harmonograph. Shepherd had originally conceived the album to contain only one track but was advised against the idea and eventually cut the music into seven songs. Elaenia's title track was named when Shepherd experienced a dream about a bird that became engulfed in a forest after he had been reading the speculative fiction novel Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives by American neuroscientist David Eagleman.
Migration is the sixth studio album by British DJ and record producer Simon Green, performing under the name Bonobo. It was released on 13 January 2017 through Ninja Tune. The album was recorded primarily on laptops rather than in a studio. It was supported by the release of several singles, including "Kerala".
