Chariessa is a genus of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. There are about six described species in Chariessa. [2] [3] [4] [5]
Chariessa beetles are carnivorous and often associated with trees of the genus Quercus, likely due to a preference for lignicolous insects that live in oaks. [6]
These six species belong to the genus Chariessa:
Cleroidea is a small superfamily of beetles containing over 10,000 species. Most of the members of the group are somewhat slender, often with fairly soft, flexible elytra, and typically hairy or scaly.
Muisca is a genus of checkered beetles of the subfamily of Clerinae or Enopliinae. The genus was first described by entomologist Maximilian Spinola in 1844.
Muisca togata is a species of checkered beetle in the family Cleridae. It is known from Brazil.
Enoclerus is a genus of checkered beetles in the subfamily Clerinae.
Enopliinae is a subfamily of beetles in the family Cleridae.
Cregya is a genus of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. There are over 100 described species in Cregya.
Pennasolis merkeli is a species of checkered beetle in the family Cleridae. It is found in North America.
Pennasolis is a genus of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. There are at least three described species in Pennasolis.
Epiphloeinae is a subfamily of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. There are about 5 genera and at least 30 described species in Epiphloeinae.
Pelonides granulatipennis is a species of checkered beetle in the family Cleridae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Pelonides is a genus of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. There are about seven described species in Pelonides.
Tarsosteninae is a subfamily of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. There are at least two genera and two described species in Tarsosteninae.
Chariessa pilosa is a species of checkered beetle in the family Cleridae. It is found in Europe and Northern Asia and North America.
Chariessa dichroa is a species of checkered beetle, belonging to the genus Chariessa. It is found in North America, most commonly on the West Coast. C. dichroa is distinguished from similar members of its genus by its black legs. Like other Chariessa beetles, it is carnivorous.
Chariessa vestita is a species of checkered beetle in the family Cleridae. It is found in Central America, North America, and South America.
Tarsostenus is a genus of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. It includes the cosmopolitan species T. univittatus.
Pelonides humeralis is a species of checkered beetle in the family Cleridae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Neorthopleura texana is a species of checkered beetle in the family Cleridae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Chariessa catalina is a recently described species of North American checkered beetle. Chariessa catalina can be distinguished from Chariessa elegans by an elytra that is closer to blue than black, and a forebody that is closer to crimson than C. elegans' diluted-blood red. C. catalina and C. elegans share a range in the southwestern corner of the continent but the range of C. elegans extends north toward the U.S.-Canadian border. This species seems to be most often encountered in March. The type specimen was collected in the Catalina Mountains of Arizona in 1969.
Tilloidea is a genus of checkered beetles in the family Cleridae. There are about six described species in Tilloidea. They are found in Europe, North Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Pacific islands.
