Cheekkilode

Last updated

Cheekkilode is a part of Nanminda village in Kozhikode district in the state of Kerala, India. A paradise for the nature lovers with its enchanting beauty and serenity, Cheekkilode is surrounded by Kolathur on the northern side, Kolakkad (Atholi panchayat) on West, Kakkur-Nanmanda on East and Annassery - Chelannur on South. Olayinmal is the centre place and business centre of Cheekkilode. Although located on a hillock, Olayinmal, the nerve centre, is a village market where one can get all daily essentials. Since people mostly prefer home made food and the floating population is almost nil, an outside visitor may not find a reasonably good hotel in this area. Foodies will have to go to Kozhikode town, 18-20 kms away, for their choice items. However, those wanting to taste local dishes can very well depend on local hotels like Thozhilaali, Jayalakshmi, Brothers, etc except on Sundays. For accommodation, a visitor for 2-3 days is well advised to go to Kozhikode town although rented houses/flats for long duration can be arranged in some pl locally. Majority of people are Hindus and the remaining 35-40% are Muslims living in harmony for centuries. A substantial percentage of Hindus are tribals, scheduled castes and backward classes. Various Hindu temples and many mosques do co-exist in the place. Quite often one would find many religious festivities attended by people from both the communities. It would be rather difficult generally for an outsider to communicate with the locals as most of them are unilingual - speaking only Malayalam. However, due to the influence of migrant labourers from north India people do understand and manage to speak tuti futi Hindi as well. Olayinmal is the nerve centre of Cheekkilode from where buses ply regularly to places like Kozhikode, Balussery, Ulliyeri, Quilandy etc. Kuttiyadi-Calicut irrigation canal passes through Cheekkilode - olayimmal. Some places of religious importance are - the age old Adumbinmal Bhagavathi temple, Karinkaali Kavu, Vallikkattukavu, Padinjare veluthedathu Bhuvaneshwari temple, Pilakkuttiyedath Makham, Kolathur temple, Kandankulangara temple, Ongorappara Pukkunnumala and Eliyodu mala. Muslim prayer centers - mazjids - , very old and newly constructe, do exist in Cheekkilode at many places.

Kappad - Thusharagiri tourist highway is passing through Cheekkilode village which connects National highway No. 66 at Thiruvangoor. The national highway point is roughly 6-7 kms away from Cheekkilode The nearest airports are at Kozhikode International Airport Kozhikode and Kannur International Airport [Kannur], both at equidistance from Cheekkilode. The nearest major Railway station is Kozhikode and Quilandy railway station is also nearby.
