Chip Tsao [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] (born 17 August 1958), also known by his Chinese language pen name To Kit, [1] [6] [7] [8] is a multilingual Hong Kong-based columnist, broadcaster, and writer. His writings are mostly in Chinese. He is well known for his sarcasm and wry sense of humour. [6]

Tsao's family traces their roots back to Guangxi. [9] His father was the vice chief editor of Ta Kung Pao, a leftwing newspaper in Hong Kong,whilst his mother was also an editor of the same paper. His maternal grandfather was a journalist of the Pearl River Daily . He was raised in Hong Kong's Wanchai district,and began reading early in his life. Tsao attended Pui Kiu Middle School and later Lingnan Secondary School in Hong Kong. During this time,his writing was once published in The New Evening Post . In 1983,he was awarded a BA in English and European Literature from the University of Warwick. [10] Then he completed a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations from the London School of Economics. He states that he never thought about becoming a writer in his youth,however,and that his parents discouraged him from this career because they felt it would be dangerous. [6]
Tsao is married and has two children. [6]
Tsao began his journalism career in the United Kingdom as a reporter for the BBC and Radio Television Hong Kong. [9] Then,famous writer Jin Yong (Louis Cha) invited him to write a regular column for Ming Pao about his experiences living abroad. It was at this time that he began to use his pen name To Kit. [6] The name of his column in Ming Pao,"'The Golden Venture",derives from the name of a vessel that took Chinese illegal immigrants to the United States in 1993.[ citation needed ] His first book,Alongside Thames,was published in 1995. [6]
Tsao later he joined a team of broadcasters to host a weekly current affairs programme on RTHK named 'Free as Wind' (講東講西). In September 2003,he switched to the Commercial Radio Hong Kong to host a similar daily radio entitled 'Summit' (光明頂,literally 'the Peak of Light').[ citation needed ]
Tsao currently writes for Apple Daily and HK Magazine.[ citation needed ] Pieces from his columns,such as Come On,James,have gone viral and become an internet sensation in several new forms of adaptations.
Tsao is not without his controversies. His status as a premier writer of Hong Kong is often challenged,one example being a piece by Rosetta Lui and Perry Lam in the December 2007 issue of Muse:"Some 15 or 20 years from now,the books of Chip Tsao... if they are talked about at all,will most probably be used as anecdotal evidence to illustrate how dumbed-down our city's culture has become since the 1997 return to Chinese sovereignty. His essays are always funny,sometimes lyrical but almost never ruminative." [11]
Tsao first began writing about Hong Kong public affairs in a column for English-language newspaper Eastern Express . He is often perceived as pro-British,and has been accused of looking down on China. [6] But in a South China Morning Post interview in 2008,Tsao explained his position on China and denied that he was an anglophile,saying:"I am critical of modern China but if people think criticising makes you a traitor,that’s their problem. Some people say I’m an Anglophile but I don’t consider myself one. I just admire beautiful things and good values,and that includes Tibetan culture. There are bad things about the Brits too –they can be hypocrites and racists."
Tsao has faced various accusations of racism for his English-language writings. In October 2005,an article he wrote for the South China Morning Post entitled "Have Hong Kong girls stopped looking for Mr White?" sparked accusations that he promoted discrimination and was jealous of white men in Hong Kong. Tsao responded that he was merely being sarcastic and provocative,repeating themes which were often discussed in Chinese media,and accused his critics themselves of being racist and lacking the ability to "read between the lines". On 27 March 2009,an article of Tsao's entitled "The War at Home" was published in the free HK Magazine . [13] In it,he wrote that the Philippines was unworthy of claiming the Spratly Islands from China because "as a nation of servants,you don't flex your muscles at your master,from whom you earn most of your bread and butter." [14] Many Filipinos decried his article as racist,discriminatory,and demeaning,and the Philippine government declared him an "undesirable alien" as a result. [15] His writings provoked negative reactions from various Philippine legislators;Senator Pia Cayetano stated that "instead of contributing to intelligent discussions on ways to resolve the Spratlys dispute,Tsao only succeeded in eliciting hatred and sowing more confusion not only among Filipinos but maybe even among his fellow Chinese who are not aware of the intricacies of the issue",while Parañaque Congressman Roilo Golez refused to accept Tsao's apology for his article,and challenged him to a boxing match. [16] [17] On 30 March 2009,HK Magazine issued an apology for the offence Tsao's article had caused. [18] The following day,Tsao subsequently admitted his wrongdoing and apologised to the Philippine government and its people in an interview aired over Hong Kong’s ATV. He said,"I realized that I had crossed the line. I now offer my public apology." He has also indicated,however,that the article was meant as satire,and that it "was never intended to be insulting to the Filipino domestic workers." [19]
In 2017,Tsao posted on Facebook mocking the Me Too movement one day after the revelation from Hong Kong athlete Lui Lai Yiu that she was sexually assaulted by a former coach. Tsao wrote that he was touched on the face without his consent by a female teacher when he was in kindergarten and now he realised that he was "one of the victims of low-end sex abuse". "Thanks to the Facebook generation,by simply attaching a selfie,anyone can become a Harvey Weinstein or a Kevin Spacey," he added. Some praised him for his "good sense of humour" and recognizing that any man could be open to accusations over past inappropriate behaviour of which they may or may not be guilty. [20] More including the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women criticised him for inappropriate analogy and ignorance on sexual violence. [21]

Ming Pao is a Chinese-language newspaper published by Media Chinese International in Hong Kong. In the 1990s, Ming Pao established four overseas branches in North America; each provides independent reporting on local news and collects local advertisements. Currently, of the overseas editions, only the two Canadian editions remain: Ming Pao Toronto and Ming Pao Vancouver. In a 2019 survey from the Chinese University of Hong Kong sampling 1079 local households, Ming Pao was listed as the second most credible paid newspaper in Hong Kong.
Sing Pao Daily News is one of the oldest Chinese newspapers in Hong Kong, first published on 1 May 1939 by the Sing Pao Newspaper Company Limited (成報報刊有限公司) under Ho Man-fat. It was initially published every three days, later becoming a daily.
The Hong Kong Economic Journal (HKEJ). is a Chinese-language daily newspaper published in Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Economic Journal Co., Ltd.. Available in both Hong Kong and Macau, the newspaper mainly focuses on economic news and other related, usually political issues. The newsjournal is also available to some air passengers – those travelling to the United States, Canada, and Europe. It is authorised by the Hong Kong government to publish announcements related to some law issues.

HK Magazine was a free English-language alternative weekly published by HK Magazine Media Group in Hong Kong. The 1000th issue was published in 2013, the same year that it was sold to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) group. The magazine printed its final issue on 7 October 2016. This was the third SCMP subsidiary to close since the takeover of the newspaper by the Alibaba Group.

The Bus Uncle is a Hong Kong Cantonese viral video depicting a verbal altercation between two men aboard a KMB bus in Hong Kong on 27 April 2006. The older and more belligerent of the two men was quickly nicknamed the "Bus Uncle", from the common Hong Kong practice of referring to older men as "Uncle" (阿叔). The altercation was recorded by a nearby passenger and uploaded to the Hong Kong Golden Forum, YouTube, and Google Video. The video became YouTube's most viewed video in May 2006, attracting viewers with the Bus Uncle's rhetorical outbursts and copious use of profanity, receiving 1.7 million hits in the first 3 weeks of that month.
Chen Wentong, better known by his pen name Liang Yusheng, was a Chinese-born Australian novelist best known for being a pioneer of the "new school" of the wuxia genre in the 20th century. Along with Jin Yong and Gu Long, he was one of the best known wuxia writers in the later half of the 20th century. Throughout his career, he published a total of 35 wuxia novels – the more notable ones include Baifa Monü Zhuan, Yunhai Yugong Yuan, Qijian Xia Tianshan and Pingzong Xiaying Lu – and some have been adapted into films and television series, including The Bride with White Hair (1993) and Seven Swords (2005).

Media Chinese International Limited is a Chinese language media platform targeting Chinese readers in major Chinese communities worldwide headquartered in Hong Kong. Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Hiew King is the chairman. It was formed by the merger of Ming Pao Enterprise, Sin Chew Media Corporation (Malaysia) and Nanyang Press Holdings (Malaysia) in April 2008. It is the first entity dually listed on the mainboards of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the Bursa Malaysia. Media Chinese's product portfolio comprises 5 daily newspapers in 13 editions and 3 free newspapers with a total daily circulation of about 1 million copies, as well as about 30 magazines. The Group has also expanded its business into digital media. Media Chinese is the proprietor of Life Magazines, the largest Chinese language magazine publisher in Malaysia, and is the major shareholder of One Media Group Limited.
Xu Deshuai is a former Chinese-born Hong Kong professional footballer. He was born in Dalian, China but represents Hong Kong in international competition. He was a member of the Hong Kong East Asian Games football team in 2009 who won the East Asian Games gold medal.

The Manila hostage crisis, officially known as the Rizal Park hostage-taking incident, took place when a disgruntled former Philippine National Police officer named Rolando Mendoza hijacked a tourist bus in Rizal Park, Manila, Philippines, on August 23, 2010. The bus carried 25 people: 20 tourists, a tour guide from Hong Kong, and four local Filipinos. Mendoza claimed that he had been unfairly dismissed from his job, and demanded a fair hearing to defend himself.
Filipino non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Hong Kong were founded by both the Filipinos and the local Chinese who aim to assist and serve the Filipino community. There are mainly three types of Filipino NGOs in Hong Kong: social justice NGOs, recreational NGOs, and religious NGOs.
Kevin Lau , former editor-in-chief of the Hong Kong daily newspaper Ming Pao, was attacked in the morning of 26 February 2014 as he was getting out of his car in Lei King Wan, Hong Kong by two men who were waiting for him. Lau suffered stab wounds to his back and legs. He was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. The police and most commentators agree that it was a triad-style attack aimed at maiming without killing.
Horace Chin Wan-kan, better known by his pen name Chin Wan, is a Hong Kong scholar advocating localism, best known for his publications On the Hong Kong City-State series. He is the founder and leader of the Hong Kong Resurgence Order and is the ideological leader of the "Hong Kong Autonomy Movement," dubbed as the "godfather of localism" in Hong Kong. Until mid-2016, Chin was an assistant professor at the Department of Chinese of Lingnan University.
Wong Kei-kwan, better known by his pen name Zunzi, is a Hong Kong political cartoonist known for his satire and pro-democracy stance and had been described as "the territory's most prominent political cartoonist".
