Chokher Bali is a Bengali drama film directed by Satu Sen based on the same name novel of Rabindranath Tagore. [1] [2] This film was released on 30 July 1938 under the banner of Associated Producers. [3] This is the first film adaptation of Chokher Bali. [4]

Reaction of Tagore

Rabindranath himself watched the movie while staying at Jorasanko [5] and later he wrote a letter on 4 August 1938 from Santiniketan that:

while staying in Calcutta I had the opportunity to see the ''cinema -natya'' Chokher Bali in the Jorasanko House. I was especially satisfied with the praiseworthy acting skill. The way the actors were able to express the tremendous inner conflict of the hero-heroines leading to an exciting document speaks of real credit on their part...

Plot

This movie revolves with extramarital affair between a young widow Binodini and Mahendra. Mahendra's wife Ashalata is a good friend of Binodini. For her feelings of love and affection, Binodini comes to stay with Mahendra's family. Behari, Mahendra's best childhood friend also mentally involves with Binodini. [7] [8]

It was directed by Rituparno Ghosh in 2003 and stars Aishwarya Rai as Binodini and Raima Sen as Ashalata. Ashalata and Binodini refer to each other as Chokher Bali. The other major characters are played by Prosenjit Chatterjee as Mahendra, Lily Chakravarty as Rajlakshmi, the mother of Mahendra, Tota Roy Chowdhury as Behari, Rajlakshmi's adopted son, and Swastika Mukherjee in a cameo role. The film was later dubbed into Hindi and was released internationally in that language.

Bon Palashir Padabali is a 1973 Indian Bengali language romance drama film co-written and directed by Uttam Kumar. It is an adaptation of a 1960 same name novel by Ramapada Chowdhury. This is a dream project for Uttam and one of the second film where he directed. The film was released on 9 February 1973, under the banner of Uttam' foundation Shilpi Sangsad.

<i>Chokher Bali</i> (novel) Novel by Rabindranath Tagore

Chokher Bali is a 1903 Bengali novel by Rabindranath Tagore that revolves around the central character Binodini and her relationships with three individuals. It explores the extramarital affair between Binodini, a young widow, and Mahendra, an old suitor of hers, the complicated friendship with Asha, Mahendra's wife, and her mutually conflicting feelings with Behari, Mahendra's childhood best friend. The novel also highlights issues of female literacy, child marriage, patriarchy within the family, and the fate of widows during that era.

Noukadubi is a Bengali drama film directed by Naresh Chandra Mitra based on a 1906 novel of the same name of Rabindranath Tagore. This film was released on 19 September 1947 under the banner of Bombay Talkies. This is a remake of 1946 Hindi film Milan made by the director Nitin Bose where Dilip Kumar starring in the lead role. It was among the big Bengali grossers of 1947.

<i>Bulbbul</i> A horror film

Bulbbul is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language period horror film written and directed by Anvita Dutt. It was produced by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Ssharma under Clean Slate Filmz and starred Tripti Dimri in the lead role alongside Avinash Tiwary, Paoli Dam, Rahul Bose, and Parambrata Chattopadhyay. Tripti Dimri was praised in many reviews. Set against the backdrop of the 1880s Bengal presidency, the film revolves around a child-bride and her journey from innocence to strength. Bulbbul was released on Netflix on 24 June 2020.

Giribala is a Bengali silent drama film directed by Madhu Bose based on the same name short story of Rabindranath Tagore. This film's name was initially Manbhanjan, which was changed as Giribala by the suggestion of Tagore himself. The movie was released on 15 February 1929 under the banner of Madan Theatre. Tagore was present at the first show of the film and he expressed his satisfaction towards the movie Giribala.
