Citrine is the third extended play (EP) by American singer and actress Hayley Kiyoko. It was released on September 30, 2016, through Empire Distribution and Atlantic Records. [1]
The EP is called Citrine because Kiyoko wears a citrine crystal, which she believes is of benefit to her wellbeing. [2]
The EP has a total duration of 18 minutes and 33 seconds. The project is described as "[a collection of] electropop love songs." [3] Kiyoko named the release of it as the moment where she really felt she found her sound and who she was. [4] During an interview, Kiyoko stated that the opening track and lead single on the EP, "Gravel to Tempo" is about "realizing that the only validation you need in life is from yourself," and that she chose high school as the setting because "it's a pivotal moment in [one's] life where [one] naturally develop[s] insecurities."[ citation needed ] "Pretty Girl", one of Kiyoko's favorite songs on the release, describes her at appreciating how beautiful a girl who comes across is, something she wouldn't share in real life, [5] while "Palace", the final track on the EP, was referred as the most powerful song, lyrically, in which, the theme is mourning someone's loss positively. [4]
The EP was preceded by the release of the lead single "Gravel To Tempo" on August 5, 2016, along a music video that premiered on Refinery29 before being listed publicly to YouTube and Vevo, a method she followed with all of her videos from this EP so far. [6] The single was her first major label release with Atlantic. [7] The track "Pretty Girl" was released one day before the EP, and premiered on Paper . [5] The official music video of the song "One Bad Night" premiered on Vice on October 11, 2016. The self-directed music video stars transgender personality Erin Armstrong and American actor Kelvin Harrison Jr and explores a story about human compassion. [8] On October 20, Kiyoko performed on MTV's Wonderland. [9] On February 16, 2017, a remix to promote the song "Palace" by producer Justin Caruso was premiered via PopMatters and properly released on digital retailers the day after. [10] [11]
To support the EP, Kiyoko embarked on the One Bad Night Tour starting on November 2, 2016, with support from the band ARIZONA. [2]

Hayley Kiyoko Alcroft is an American singer-songwriter, dancer, actress, and author. As a child model and actress, she appeared in a variety of films, including the Scooby-Doo! film series (2009–2010), Lemonade Mouth (2011), Blue Lagoon: The Awakening (2012), Jem and the Holograms (2015), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), and XOXO (2016). Alongside her film roles, she also had a recurring role in the TV series The Fosters (2014) and a lead role on CSI: Cyber (2015–2016) and Five Points (2018–2019).
Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe, known mononymously as Tinashe, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Tinashe moved to Pasadena, California as a child, where she pursued work in entertainment. "Deuces" is a song written and performed by American singer Chris Brown featuring fellow American musicians Tyga and Kevin McCall. Produced by McCall, "Deuces" was released digitally on June 25, 2010, as the lead single from Brown's first collaborative effort with Tyga, titled Fan of a Fan (2010). The song is a slow, down-tempo R&B ballad featuring elements from the genres of house and pop music, while the song is lyrically about "breaking it off with a girl after failed attempts to make the relationship work". The Stunners were an American girl group formed in Los Angeles in 2007. Originally the members were Allie Gonino, Hayley Kiyoko, Marisol Esparza, Kelsey Sanders, and Tinashe. In July 2009 after the debut single "Bubblegum", Sanders left the group and was replaced by Lauren Hudson. The group disbanded in 2011.

Kiyoko co-wrote "Curious" with Lisa Vitale, Brandon Colbein, Jakob Hazell and Svante Halldin, while Jack & Coke produced the song. The dance-pop, R&B and synth-pop track details Kiyoko confronting an ex-girlfriend she believes is dating a man to mask her true feelings for Kiyoko. Its title adopts "curious", a term used within the LGBT community to express casual same-sex experimentation, as Kiyoko demands the truth about the authenticity of her love interest's new relationship.
