Committee for the Executive Office

The Committee for the Executive Office was established to advise and assist the First Minister and deputy First Minister (currently Michelle O'Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly), on matters within their responsibilities as Ministers. The committee undertakes a scrutiny, policy development and consultation role with respect to the Executive Office and plays a key role in the consideration and development of legislation.

The Assembly approved a motion on 12 June 2007 to change the name of the committee from Committee of the Centre to Committee for the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister. [1] Following the renaming of departments in the Northern Ireland Executive in 2016, the Assembly committee was renamed as the Committee for the Executive Office, reflecting the new name of the former Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister.

The committee met for the first time in the 2022–2027 Assembly on 14 February 2024.

The Third Executive was, under the terms of the Northern Ireland Act 1998, a power-sharing coalition.

The role of official opposition in the Northern Ireland Assembly can be taken by larger political parties who do not participate in Northern Ireland's consociational power-sharing Executive. Forming an Assembly Opposition empowers opposition parties to scrutinise the work of government, giving them financial assistance, enhanced speaking rights in the chamber and the right to chair certain committees.

The Committee for Justice is a Northern Ireland Assembly committee established to advise, assist and scrutinise the work of the Department of Justice and the Minister of Justice. The Committee undertakes a scrutiny, policy development and consultation role with respect to the Department of Justice and plays a key role in the consideration and development of legislation.

The 6th Executive of Northern Ireland was appointed on 3 February 2024, following the 2022 election to the seventh Northern Ireland Assembly held on 5 May 2022 and the protracted negotiations leading up to the 2024 Northern Ireland Executive formation. The newly elected assembly met for the first time on 13 May 2022. It is led by Michelle O'Neill of Sinn Féin as First Minister and Emma Little-Pengelly of the DUP as deputy First Minister.
