Core Keeper is a survival sandbox game developed by Pugstorm. The game features mechanics similar to other games in the sandbox genre such as Minecraft , Terraria and Stardew Valley , including mining, crafting, farming and exploration in a procedurally generated underground world. It was released to Steam in early access on 8 March 2022 and received praise for its game mechanics, art style, tone, atmosphere and ease of access to multiplayer modes. The game was released on Windows, Linux, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on 27 August 2024, and was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 17 September 2024. [2]
Core Keeper is a top-down sandbox game based around survival and crafting mechanics similar to games such as Minecraft and Terraria. [3] It can be played single-player or cooperatively with up to eight players. [3] [4] Players also have the ability to host a server which anyone can join at any time up to a maximum of eight players. [5] [6] The game begins with a cutscene explaining the backstory of the player character before placing the character in a procedurally generated network of caverns. [7] The starting location, called the Core chamber, [8] is the same biome for all players, containing the same starting enemies and resources. [7] It also contains three devices representing bosses that can be found and defeated within the game. [7] It is a dark area at the beginning of the game but can be illuminated with the use of torches or a lantern. [3] [8] Torches can be made using gathered wood which is the first resource encountered in the area. [9] [10]
The world is built up of square tiles of dirt and other materials which can be dug or mined to further explore the map and to gather resources. [11] Blocks of ore sparkle, helping players to know in which direction to dig to find them. [3] [8] Gathered resources can be used to craft tools and workbenches which unlock new items to craft. [7] A furnace can also be crafted which allows the player to smelt ores to create weapons and armour. [9] [11] Players must also gather food to prevent their character from starving which occurs when their "hunger bar" becomes empty. [11] This can be done by finding food in the world or by planting and watering seeds using a hoe and watering can. [3] [9] Later in the game, watering crops can be automated with the use of sprinklers. [12] Additionally, fish can be caught in a fishing rhythm minigame using a fishing rod. [8] [13] Food can also be combined into meals using a cooking pot which can be crafted in the game. [8] [9] Meals cooked in this way provide an additional health boost and perks compared to naturally occurring food. [9]
Exploration in the game is facilitated with an in-game map which can be opened as an overlay. [11] It is also facilitated with the use of portals which allow the player to traverse great distances across the map. [12] As players explore other areas of the game world, different biomes containing new resources and enemies are revealed. [3] As enemies move around the game, they spread the environment in which they spawn, meaning that clearing an area of enemies requires cleaning the floor as well as defeating them. [3] [14] If a player dies during combat, they respawn at the Core in the starting area. [14] They can retrieve their lost belongings by returning to the area where they died and reclaiming them from the tombstone dropped there. [9] [15] New regions also contain large boss enemies. [11] Once defeated, bosses drop items that can be used to summon NPC merchants to live at the player's base. [16] The first three bosses included in the game are Glurch the Abominous Mass, a giant, jumping, orange slime, Ghorm the Devourer, a massive insect creature that tunnels throughout the map, and The Hive Mother, a fleshy creature that spits acid and summons other enemies. [17] Upon being defeated, these bosses drop items which can be used to activate the Core in the Core chamber, unlocking new items such as a drill for automatically mining ores and new bosses. [17] [18] [19] Furthermore, whilst the areas accessible to the player are initially limited by a wall that surrounds the first few starting areas, upon activating the core this wall is removed, revealing new biomes and an infinitely generated map. [20]
The game allows for a wide array of ways to play ranging from focusing on fighting bosses to avoiding bosses in favour of crafting and base-building. [11] This is reflected in the game's skill system which rewards activities taken by the player with points to improve skills related to them. [11] For example, running a lot improves the character's speed, mining resources improves the character's efficiency in mining, and fighting improves the character's strength. [7] Players also choose a starting class during character creation before they begin the game which gives bonuses to specific skills and relevant starting resources. [9] [11] The look of the player character can also be customised by using vanity slots in the inventory. [12]
Core Keeper was developed by Pugstorm and published by Fireshine Games. [21] It was announced during an IGN livestream on 11 June 2021. [22] It was launched in open alpha later that year for a period of two weeks from 1–14 December. [23] A demo of the game was also released for Steam Next Fest In February 2022. [24] It was released to Steam in early access on 8 March 2022. [25] [26] It supports Windows and Linux. [27] It reached a quarter-million sales within a week [28] [29] and half a million in two weeks. [30] [31] PC Gamer attributed the early success in sales to positive coverage of the game from online streamers, reporting that the game had received almost 2 million views on Twitch by 23 March. [30] The game reached 1 million sales by July 2022, having sold an additional 500,000 copies since the end of March. [32]
The first seasonal event in the game, called "The Great Egg Hunt", ran from 13–19 April 2022 and added hidden eggs that could be combined to craft a Golden Egg item used to unlock hidden bonuses. [33] [34] The first major update for the game entitled "The Sunken Sea" was released on 15 June, introducing boats, islands and a new water biome to the game, as well as new fish, ores, enemies and weapons. [35] [36] [37] A smaller update introducing cosmetic items called "Cozy Caverns" was released on 14 September, [38] followed by a crossover with Terraria on 26 September that introduced a King Slime boss to the game, [39] [40] and a Halloween event called "Creepy Costume Party" that ran until 5 November. [41] The next major update "The Desert of Beginnings" released on 10 November and introduced a new desert biome, two new bosses, go-karts and bug-hunting. [41] [42] [43] A currently unnamed crystal biome was also planned to release in 2023. [38]
Rick Lane of NME compared the presentation of the game favourably to the 1997 game Dungeon Keeper for its underground setting, dark atmosphere and pixel art style. He felt that although the game's mechanics do "little to innovate or iterate" upon previous games in the genre such as Minecraft, its theme and tone "reframe the mechanics so that they don’t feel stale". He also felt that the game's choice to stick to well-known mechanics made it more immediately playable, even in its early access form. [3] Nicole Clark of Polygon described the game as a "top-down Terraria" and compared it to other games in the sandbox genre, but argued that it isn't derivative because it "weaves tried-and-true survival sim elements into a tight play loop where the game is the grind in a way that feels meditative without being too repetitive." She also stated that the game "does a great job of slowly revealing its crafting system" and praised its ability to let the player learn by doing which she called "a rare quality in a genre that can be encumbered by many archaic rules and difficult-to-navigate screens." [11] Jason Coles of PCGamesN praised features of the game that he felt gave implicit direction to the player on what to do, such as its introductory cutscene, starting location items, and crafting progression. Overall he felt that these features "result in a game that – like Minecraft – is built around crafting and survival, but offers a clear path forward for players who need a little more direction." [7]
Christopher Livingstone of PC Gamer enjoyed the contrast between the game's "genuinely spooky areas and scary moments" and its "cozy, comfy, warm and happy Stardew Valley feel". He praised the "charming art and animation" as well as the fishing, farming and cooking aspects of the game. [8] Harry Alston of TheGamer called the visual design of the game "gorgeous" and praised the combat as "straightforward but nuanced". He also praised the peaceful, slow living atmosphere of the game which he compared to Stardew Valley, concluding that "Core Keeper is comfortable, the sort of game that makes you feel nostalgic even though you’ve never played it before." [21]
In April 2022, Vulture included the game on its list of "The Best Video Games of 2022 (So Far)", describing it as "[striking] a sublime balance between precarious dungeoneering and the cozy chores back home." [44] In October 2022, Polygon listed Core Keeper as one of the best co-op management games. [27] In November 2022, PCGamer described Core Keeper as the year's best co-op survival game. [42]

Minecraft is a 2011 sandbox game developed and published by Swedish video game developer Mojang Studios. Originally created by Markus "Notch" Persson using the Java programming language, the first public build was released on 17 May 2009. The game would continue to be developed over the span of two years, until its full release on 18 November 2011. Afterwards, Persson left Mojang and gave Jens "Jeb" Bergensten control over the game's development. In the years since its release, it has been ported to several platforms, including smartphones, tablets, and various video game consoles, primarily by 4J Studios. In 2014, Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property were purchased by Microsoft for US$2.5 billion. Minecraft has since become the best-selling video game of all-time, with over 300 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active players as of 2023.
Facepunch Studios Ltd is a British video game developer and publisher headquartered in Birmingham, England, founded in June 2004 and incorporated on 17 March 2009 by Garry Newman. The company is most known for its sandbox video game Garry's Mod and survival game Rust. Facepunch is currently developing s&box, which is regarded as a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod.
Terraria is a 2011 action-adventure sandbox game developed by Re-Logic. The game was first released for Windows and has since been ported to other PC and console platforms. The game features exploration, crafting, building, painting, and combat with a variety of creatures in a procedurally generated 2D world. Terraria is one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling 58.7 million copies as of 2024.
Rust is a multiplayer survival video game developed by Facepunch Studios. It was first released in early access in December 2013 and received its full release in February 2018. Rust is available on Windows and macOS. Console versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One developed in conjunction with Double Eleven were released in May 2021. Rust was initially created as a clone of DayZ, a popular mod for ARMA 2, with crafting elements akin to those in Minecraft.
Lego Worlds is a Lego-themed sandbox game developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game allows players to build constructions in a 3D procedurally generated world. A beta version of the game was released on 1 June 2015 on Steam Early Access. It was released on 7 March 2017 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A version for Nintendo Switch was released on 5 September 2017 in North America and 8 September 2017 in Europe.
Cube Life: Island Survival is an indie open world sandbox survival video game developed and published by Cypronia. It was released for Wii U in June 2015. An HD remake was released for Steam in April 2018, for Android and iOS in August 2018, and for Nintendo Switch in December 2020.
Stardew Valley is a 2016 farm life simulation role-playing video game developed by Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone. Players take the role of a character who inherits their deceased grandfather's dilapidated farm in a place known as Stardew Valley. The game was originally released for Windows in February 2016 before being ported to other platforms. Stardew Valley is an open-ended game, allowing players to grow crops, raise livestock, fish, cook, mine, forage, and socialize with the townspeople, including the ability to marry and have children. It allows up to eight players to play online together.
Junk Jack is an action-adventure sandbox video game by Italian developer Pixbits, originally released on iOS in 2011. A sequel entitled Junk Jack X was released on August 29, 2013. Junk Jack X has recently been renamed to Junk Jack, and the original game has been renamed to Junk Jack Retro.

Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative first-person shooter video game developed by Danish studio Ghost Ship Games and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. Deep Rock Galactic was fully released on May 13, 2020 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One after its early access release in February 28, 2018. The game was later released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in January 2022, and for Xbox Series X/S in September 2022.
Minecraft Dungeons is a 2020 dungeon crawler video game developed by Mojang Studios and Double Eleven and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is a spin-off of the sandbox video game Minecraft and was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in May 2020. It was also adapted into an arcade video game by Raw Thrills. The arcade version released in May 2021. The game would later cease development on September 28, 2023.
Hytale is an upcoming sandbox game by Hypixel Studios. Production began in 2015 by developers from the Minecraft multiplayer server Hypixel with funding from Riot Games, who later bought the studio in 2020. It is scheduled to release for Windows and macOS as well as consoles and mobile devices.
A creeper is a fictional creature in the sandbox video game Minecraft. Creepers are hostile mobs that spawn in dark places, but can still survive in the sunlight. Instead of attacking the player directly, they creep up on the player and explode, destroying blocks in the surrounding area and potentially hurting or killing the player if they are within the blast radius. Their green camouflage and generally silent behavior aid in stealth attacks, making them one of the most dangerous mobs in Minecraft. Creepers were first added to Minecraft in a pre-alpha update to the game that was released on September 1, 2009.
Scrap Mechanic is a sandbox video game developed for Windows by Swedish game studio and publisher Axolot Games, in which players can build machines, vehicles, and buildings, and share their creations online. The initial version of the game, released on January 20, 2016, was a creative mode with unlimited access to all available parts for building. On the day of its release, it was the top-selling game on Steam and is estimated to have 1–2 million sales. The survival mode update for the game, with new game mechanics including wildlife, scavenging, farming, and cooking, as well as an underwater biome, was released on May 7, 2020. It was the third-best-selling game on Steam the week after the update.
Vintage Story is a sandbox survival game developed and published by Anego Studios. The founders of Anego Studios, Tyron and Irena Madlener, began development on a standalone version of an earlier mod for Minecraft called Vintagecraft. An old version of the game is available for free download. The game is in early access and can be played in singleplayer or multiplayer modes.
Valheim is an upcoming survival and sandbox video game by the Swedish developer Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Studios. It was released in early access on 2 February 2021 for Linux and Windows via Steam, and for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on 14 March 2023. The game was developed by a five-person team, building on development work which Richard Svensson had undertaken as a side project in his spare time. Since its early access release, Valheim has achieved both critical and commercial success, being praised as a "rare exception" of a refined early access game. A month after its release, it had sold over five million copies and was one of the most played games on Steam.
V Rising is a 2024 action role-playing survival game developed by Stunlock Studios and published by Level Infinite. It was first released in early access for Windows in May 2022 before officially releasing two years later, with a PlayStation 5 version that released on June 11, 2024. Within a week, it had surpassed one million sales.
Minecraft Legends is a 2023 real-time action-strategy video game developed by Mojang Studios and Blackbird Interactive and published by Xbox Game Studios. A spin-off of the 2011 sandbox game Minecraft, it was released on Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on April 18, 2023. The game would later cease development on January 10, 2024.
