Crowded House (foaled 22 March 2006) is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 2008 he won two of his four races including an impressive victory in the Group One Racing Post Trophy and was rated the season's best British-trained juvenile. He started the following year as a leading contender for the British Classic Races but ran poorly in the Dante Stakes before finishing sixth in The Derby. He subsequently raced in Dubai and the United States but never won another race although he finished second in the Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 2 and the Pacific Classic. He was retired from racing in 2011 having won two of his nineteen races and became a breeding stallion in Australia.

Background

Crowded House is a chestnut horse with a broad white blaze and four white socks bred by the Nottinghamshire-based Car Colston Hall Stud. He was sired by Rainbow Quest who won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe before becoming a very successful breeding stallion. Rainbow Quest's other progeny included Quest for Fame, Saumarez, Raintrap, Nedawi, Armiger, Spectrum and Millenary. [2] Crowded House's dam Wiener Wald made no impact as a racehorse, failing to win or place in five races in the United States, [3] but was a daughter of Chapel of Dreams who won the Palomar Handicap and was a half-sister to Storm Cat. [4]

As a yearling, Crowded House was offered for sale at Tattersalls in October 2007 and was bought for 75,000 guineas by the bloodstock agents McKeever St Lawrence. [5] The colt was sent into training with Brian Meehan at Manton in Wiltshire. During his racing career Crowded House was owned in partnership by J Paul Reddam, Carmen Burrell and Jonathan Harvey.

Racing career

2008: two-year-old season

On his racecourse debut Crowded House started a 25/1 outsider in a maiden race over seven furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse on 22 August and finished tenth of the nineteen runners behind his stable companion Delegator. On 5 September the colt was stepped up in distance for a maiden over one mile on the polytrack surface at Kempton Park Racecourse and started the 11/4 joint-favourite alongside the John Gosden-trained Alwaary in a thirteen-runner field. Ridden by Jamie Spencer he disputed the lead from the start, went clear of the field approaching the final furlong and won by three and a quarter lengths despite being eased down in the closing stages. [6] Crowded House's next race was the Tattersalls Timeform Million at Newmarket on 4 October, a race restricted to horses sold as yearlings at Tatteralls and which carried a first prize of £541,700. After racing among the leaders he took the lead 50 yards from the finish he was caught in the final strides and beaten by the gelding Donativum. The winner went on to take the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf three weeks later.

On 25 October Crowded House was moved up in class for the Group One Racing Post Trophy over one mile at Doncaster Racecourse and was made the 7/1 third favourite behind Jukebox Jury (winner of the Royal Lodge Stakes) and the Irish challenger Masterofthehorse who had finished third to Sea the Stars in the Beresford Stakes. The other twelve runners included Sri Putra (Solario Stakes), Indian Ocean (fourth in the National Stakes) and several highly regarded maiden winners. Jamie Spencer restrained the colt at the rear of the field as the outsider Cornish set the pace, before switching to the right to make his challenge in the last quarter mile. The colt veered to the left, hampering at least two of his opponents before sprinting clear in the closing stages to win by three and a half lengths from Jukebox Jury with Skanky Biscuit (also trained by Meehan) a neck away in third. [7] [8] After the race Spencer commented "He's just a good horse and needs better ground really. I was just stopped in my run early and when I got out he just flew. It was just inexperience that made him go left. He's a class horse." [9] Meehan said "He looks good, he looks a serious horse, he did it so well. He was probably always getting there. In the Sales race at Newmarket, we had to go for the money but it was obviously a furlong too short. He looked very impressive here today and he's a very classy horse, everything about him is good". 2009: three-year-old season

Crowded House began the 2008 season as the ante-post favourite for The Derby. [11] On his first appearance as a three-year-old, Crowded House contested the Dante Stakes (a major trial race for the Derby) over ten and a half furlongs at York Racecourse on 14 May. He started the 2/1 favourite but never looked likely to win and finished eighth of the ten runners behind Black Bear Island. Meehan said that the colt had returned from York in a somewhat "battered" condition and commented "I still think the world of the horse. We’ve still got big plans for him". [11]

In the 2009 Epsom Derby on 6 June Crowded House started at odds of 20/1 in a twelve-runner field which contained only four British-trained runners. Meehan decided to allow the colt to take his chance after an impressive exercise gallop six days before the race. [12] After turning into the straight in eleventh place he made steady progress before being badly hampered two furlongs from the finish and came home sixth behind the Irish colts Sea the Stars, Fame and Glory, Masterofthehorse, Rip Van Winkle and Golden Sword. 2010: four-year-old season

In the early part of 2010 Crowded House was sent to race in Dubai where he contested three races on the synthetic Tapeta Footings track at Meydan Racecourse. In February he finished second to Alexandros in the Al Rashidiya and then started favourite for the Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 2 in which he was beaten half a length by the locally trained Allybar. On 27 March he was ridden by John Velasquez in the Dubai World Cup and finished ninth of fourteen behind the Brazilian-bred Gloria de Campeao. [14]

On his return to Europe, Crowded house finished fourth in the Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown Park Racecourse in April, sixth to Harbinger in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and seventh in the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket in July. [15]

In the autumn of 2010 Crowded House was sent to race in the United States where he was trained by Ben Cecil. [16] On his first appearance in North America he finished fourth behind The Usual Q T in the Grade I Eddie Read Handicap on turf at Del Mar Racetrack on 25 July. On 29 August he was ridden by Corey Nakatani in the Grade I Pacific Classic on Del Mar's polytrack surface. Starting at odds of 12.6/1 he took the lead a furlong out but was caught in the last 40 yards and beaten three quarter of a length into second place by the five-year-old Richard's Kid. [17] [18] In his two remaining races of 2010 Crowded House finished a close fourth to Court Vision in the Woodbine Mile in September but then ran poorly when last of seven behind Richard's Kid in the Goodwood Stakes at Hollywood Park Racetrack on 3 October.

2011: five-year-old season

In 2011 Crowded House was again sent to race in Dubai and ran three times at Meydan. He finished seventh in the Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 2 and ninth in the Burj Nahaar before running last of fourteen in the Godolphin Mile on 26 March. [19]

Assessment

In the 2008 European Thoroughbred Rankings, Crowded House was given a rating of 120, making him the third-best juvenile of the year behind the Irish colts Mastercraftsman and Bushranger. [20]

Stud record

At the end of his racing career, Crowded House was retired to become a breeding stallion at the Wattle Grove Stud, in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales, Australia. [21]

Tobougg Thoroughbred racehorse

Tobougg (1998–2018) was a thoroughbred racehorse and sire, who was bred in Ireland, but trained in England and Dubai during a racing career which lasted from 2000 to 2002. He was named European Champion Two-Year-Old Colt for 2000 at the Cartier Racing Awards. He was unbeaten in three starts in his championship season including two Group One races, the Prix de la Salamandre in France and the Dewhurst Stakes in England. His subsequent career was restricted by injury and he won only one minor race in the next two years. He retired to a stud career in China.

Entrepreneur (horse) British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Entrepreneur was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from August 1996 to September 1997 he ran six times and won three races. After winning two of his three races in 1996 he won the 2000 Guineas on his first start as a three-year-old. Entrepreneur then started the shortest-priced Epsom Derby favourite for fifty years, but finished fourth. After another disappointing run in autumn he was retired to stud.

Environment Friend was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for his win in the 1991 running of the Eclipse Stakes, one of the United Kingdom's most important weight-for-age races. After winning the second of his races as a two-year-old he established himself as a top-class colt with a five length win in the Dante Stakes in May 1991. He ran poorly in The Derby but then defeated a strong field to win the Eclipse as a 28/1 outsider. Environment Friend never won again, but remained in training until the age of seven, and was placed in several important races including the Coronation Cup (twice), the Champion Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes. From 1993 until 1995 his time was divided between standing as a breeding stallion and competing as a racehorse. Environment Friend died in 2012 at the age of twenty-four.

The Grey Gatsby Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

The Grey Gatsby is an Irish-bred racehorse who has been trained in Britain and Ireland. In 2014 he established himself as one of the best colts of his generation in Europe by winning the Dante Stakes and the Prix du Jockey Club before defeating the dual Derby winner Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes. At the end of the year he was rated level with Australia and Kingman as the best three-year-old colt in the world. He has continued to compete in Group races until 2017 but did not recapture the form shown in his three-year-old season.

Holding Court was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from September 1999 until January 2002 he ran sixteen times and won five races. Originally trained by Brian Meehan, he showed promise as a two-year-old before being moved to Michael Jarvis's stable in the spring of 2000. After winning a handicap race on his first appearance as a three-year-old he was campaigned un France where he won the Prix La Force before recording his biggest success when he won the Prix du Jockey Club by six lengths. He was beaten in his three remaining races that year but returned as a four-year-old to win the Grand Prix de Deauville. In the autumn of 2000 he was exported to Saudi Arabia where he had no success racing on dirt and had no impact at stud. Holding Court was suited by front-running tactics and showed a marked preference for soft ground.

Postponed Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Postponed is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He won one minor race as a two-year-old before establishing himself as a useful middle-distance performer in the following year with wins in the Glasgow Stakes and the Great Voltigeur Stakes. In July 2015, he recorded his biggest victory in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot Racecourse and followed up with a success in the Prix Foy. After a change of trainer he returned in 2016 to win the Dubai City of Gold, Dubai Sheema Classic, Coronation Cup and International Stakes. He was retired from racing in May 2017 having won 9 of his 20 races and earned nearly £5,000,000 in win and place prize money.

Hamas was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Unraced as a two-year-old he won three of his eleven races in 1992 including the Bentinck Stakes, but appeared to be well below top class and was used as a pacemaker for a more fancied horse in the same ownership on his only run in Group One class. As a four-year-old, he won the Group Three Duke of York Stakes but was well beaten in his next two races before recording a 33/1 upset win in the July Cup. He finished last in both of his subsequent races and was retired at the end of the year. He had limited success as a breeding stallion.

Piccolo is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed promising but unremarkable form in his early career, winning one of his first ten starts. In the summer of his three-year-old season he was switched to sprint distances and became a top class performer, winning the Chipchase Stakes before being awarded the Nunthorpe Stakes on the disqualification of Blue Siren. He returned as a four-year-old in 1995 and won the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. Apart from his victories he also finished second in both the Haydock Sprint Cup and the July Cup. After his retirement from racing he became a successful breeding stallion.

Donna Blini is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best juvenile fillies of her generation in Britain in 2005 when she won three of her four races including the Cherry Hinton Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she was mainly campaigned in sprint races and won one minor race from seven starts. She was retired from racing having won four of her eleven races and exported to become a broodmare in Japan. She made an immediate impact as a dam of winners, producing the outstanding racemare Gentildonna.

Dilshaan is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a brief racing career he won two of his four races between September 2000 and June 2001. After finishing second in a minor race on his racecourse debut he was moved up in class to record an upset victory in the Group One Racing Post Trophy in October. In the following spring he returned from absence of more than six months to establish himself as a major contender for The Derby with a win in the Dante Stakes. He ran poorly in the Derby and his racing career was subsequently ended by injury. He has been a success as a breeding stallion siring various event horses who are now coming through with successful results.

Peter Davies was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 1990 he was one of the best staying colts of his generation in Britain, winning all three of his races including the Somerville Tattersall Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy. He did not fulfil his early promise, failing to win a race in the next two seasons before winning twice as a five-year-old in 1993. He was later transferred to race in the United States and subsequently relocated to South Africa but had no further success before being retired from racing at the age of seven.

Lujain was an American-bred, British-trained thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 1998 when he won his first three races by wide margins, culminating in a victory in the G1 Middle Park Stakes. He made no impact in three subsequent races and was retired to stud at the end of 1999. He had little success as a breeding stallion.

Mujahid (horse) American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Mujahid is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred and owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum he was trained throughout his racing career in England by John Dunlop. As a two-year-old in 1998 Mujahid won three of his four races and was rated the best of his generation in Europe after recording an upset win in the Dewhurst Stakes. He never won another race although he did finish third in the 2000 Guineas in 1999. After his retirement from racing he became a successful breeding stallion.

Iktamal was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Owned throughout his racing career by Maktoum Al Maktoum and trained in all but one of his races by Ed Dunlop he was a sprinter who raced almost exclusively over distance of six and seven furlongs. In his first two seasons he showed useful but unremarkable form, winning two minor races and a relatively valuable handicap race as a three-year-old in 1995. In the following year he was highly-tried, running eleven times and emerging as a top-class performer. He was disqualified after finishing first in the Chipchase Stakes but went on to win the Beeswing Stakes before recording his biggest success in the Group One Haydock Park Sprint Cup. In the same year he finished fourth in both the July Cup and the Prix Maurice de Gheest as well as running sixth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. After his retirement from racing he stood as a breeding stallion in South Africa.

Awzaan is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 2009 when he was unbeaten in four races including the Mill Reef Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes. He raced for two more seasons but never won again. In 2012 he was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion in Uruguay.

Air Express was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was highly tried as a juvenile in 1996, winning one minor race and being placed in the July Stakes, Solario Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes. In the spring of 1997 he embarked on a successful international campaign winning the Premio Parioli in Italy and the Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen in Germany. On his return to England he ran second in the St James's Palace Stakes and recorded his biggest victory when taking the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He failed to win in two starts as a four-year-old and was retired to stud. He made a promising start to his career as a breeding stallion but died in 2000 at the age of six.

Arcano is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best European colts of his generation in 2009 when he was unbeaten in three races including the July Stakes and the Prix Morny. He failed to win in two races as a three-year-old and was retired at the end of his second season. He has stood at a breeding stallion in Ireland and Italy and has had some success as a breeding stallion.

Decorated Knight is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After finishing second in his only start as a two-year-old he won two minor races in the following year as well as running third in the Group 2 Darley Stakes. He improved as a four-year-old in 2016 winning the Festival Stakes and the Meld Stakes as well as finishing a close second in the Diomed Stakes. He emerged as performer of the highest class in 2017 when he took the Winter Derby Trial before recording Group 1 wins in the Jebel Hatta, Tattersalls Gold Cup and Irish Champion Stakes.
