Cynegetis impunctata (Linnaeus, 1767) | |
Cynegetis impunctata is a species of ladybird native to continental Europe. In Germany it is known as the grass ladybird, unspotted ladybird or ochre ladybird.
The adult beetles are about 3 to 4.5 mm long, strongly domed and ochre-brown in colour. There are usually no spots, but some specimens have spots or may be darker in colour.
Adults and larvae are vegetarian and polyphagous, on grasses such as couch-grass ( Elymus repens ), false oat-grass ( Arrhenatherum elatius ) and reed canary-grass ( Phalaris arundinacea ). [1] [2]
It is found in Austria, Belgium, non-alpine Germany, Norway, Poland, Sweden and less frequently in other countries. [1] [3] [4] As of 2012 it is not reported from the British Isles.
Phalaris arundinacea, or reed canary grass, is a tall, perennial bunchgrass that commonly forms extensive single-species stands along the margins of lakes and streams and in wet open areas, with a wide distribution in Europe, Asia, northern Africa and North America. Other common names for the plant include gardener's-garters and ribbon grass in English, alpiste roseau in French, Rohrglanzgras in German, kusa-yoshi in Japanese, caniço-malhado in Portuguese, and hierba cinta and pasto cinto in Spanish.
Phalaris is a genus of flowering plants in the grass family. Species of Phalaris are distributed across all continents except Antarctica. They can be found in a broad range of habitats from below sea level to thousands of feet above sea level and from wet marshy areas to dry places. P. arundinacea and P. aquatica are sometimes invasive species in wetlands.
The large skipper is a butterfly of the family Hesperiidae.
Phalaris aquatica, known by the common names bulbous canary-grass and Harding grass, is a species of grass in the genus Phalaris of the family Poaceae.
Eresus sandaliatus is a species of spider found primarily in northern and central Europe. Like other species of the genus Eresus, it is commonly called ladybird spider because of the coloration of the male.
Coccinella septempunctata, the common ladybug, the seven-spot ladybird, is a carnivorous beetle native to the Old World and is the most common ladybird in Europe. The beetle is also found in North America, Central and Eastern Asia and regions with a temperate climate. Its elytra are of a red colour, but each punctuated with three black spots, with one further spot being spread over the junction of the two, making a total of seven spots, from which the species derives both its common and scientific names.
Propylea quatuordecimpunctata is a small lady beetle, belonging to the family Coccinellidae. It is sometimes referred to by the common name 14-spotted ladybird beetle, or simply P-14.
Apamea ophiogramma, the double lobed, is a moth of the family Noctuidae. It is found in the Palearctic realm in North and Central Europe to the Urals, Turkestan, Russian Far East, and Siberia. There have been at least two separate introductions into North America and it is now rapidly expanding in range. This species is sometimes placed in the monotypic genus Lateroligia.
Coccinellidae is a widespread family of small beetles. They are commonly known as ladybugs in North America and ladybirds in the United Kingdom; "lady" refers to mother Mary. Entomologists use the names ladybird beetles or lady beetles to avoid confusion with true bugs. The more than 6,000 described species have a global distribution and are found in a variety of habitats. They are oval beetles with a domed back and flat underside. Many of the species have conspicuous aposematic (warning) colours and patterns, such as red with black spots, that warn potential predators that they taste bad.
Mythimna conigera, the brown-line bright-eye, is a moth of the family Noctuidae.
Calvia quatuordecimguttata, the cream-spot ladybird, is a species of ladybird in the family Coccinellidae. Its distribution is holarctic, it being found in Europe and through the East Palearctic to Japan. It is introduced to North America. This ladybird is generally 4 to 5 millimetres in length and varies in appearance depending on the geographical location. It usually lives in hedgerows and deciduous trees.
Elachista humilis is a moth of the family Elachistidae found in most of Europe.
Cosmopterix orichalcea is a moth of the family Cosmopterigidae. It is known from most of Europe east to Japan.
Elachista albifrontella is a moth of the family Elachistidae found in Europe.
Helcystogramma rufescens is a moth of the family Gelechiidae. It is found in most of Europe.
Oenopia conglobata is a species of ladybird (Coccinellidae) native to continental Europe, Asia and Africa. Its colloquial names in Germany are 'poplar ladybird' and Kugelige ladybird.
Subcoccinella vigintiquatuorpunctata is a beetle in the family Coccinellidae. It is the only member of the genus Subcoccinella. It has the typical, almost semi-spherical, ladybird shape and is patterned with spots. However it differs from many of the well-known ladybirds in being neither smooth and shiny nor an eater of aphids: the wing-cases look velvety and it eats fungal moulds on plants.
Costelytra giveni, commonly known as New Zealand grass grub, is a scarab beetle that is endemic to New Zealand and is a prevalent pasture pest.
Archanara neurica, the white-mantled wainscot, is a nocturnal moth of the family Noctuidae described by Jacob Hübner in 1808. It is found in Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Sicily, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Serbia. In the UK, its only regular sites are at RSPB Minsmere and Walberswick National Nature Reserve in Suffolk.
