Elections to regional councils in the Czech Republic were held in 13 regions (excluding Prague) on 12–13 October 2012. [1] The Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) won in nine regions, though with a considerable loss of vote share. The Communist Party won in two regions and increased its vote share, finishing second overall. The election results were widely seen as a defeat for the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), which finished third overall and won only in the Plzeň Region. The regional grouping Mayors for Liberec Region won unexpectedly in Liberec Region. [2]

Situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava river, the city is home to about 1.3 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of 2.6 million. The city has a temperate climate, with warm summers and chilly winters.
The Czech Social Democratic Party is a social-democratic political party in the Czech Republic. It holds 15 seats in the Chamber of Deputies following the 2017 legislative election, losing 35 seats. The party has been led by Jan Hamáček since 2018. It has been a junior coalition party within a minority cabinet since June 2018, and was a senior coalition party from 1998 to 2006 and from 2013 to 2017.
ČSSD won the previous elections in 2008 in all regions. [3] Although it lost support in the months before the election, the party was still leading in polls, and the parties involved in the right-wing government were highly unpopular. The country had seen a long-term loss of confidence in established parties, with voters turning to non-parliamentary parties. Support appeared to be growing for the Communist Party, which had been isolated in Czech politics since the Velvet Revolution. [4]
The Velvet Revolution or Gentle Revolution was a non-violent transition of power in what was then Czechoslovakia, occurring from 17 November to 29 December 1989. Popular demonstrations against the one-party government of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia included students and older dissidents. The result was the end of 41 years of one-party rule in Czechoslovakia, and the subsequent dismantling of the planned economy and conversion to a parliamentary republic.

Workers' Party was a Czech far-right, extremist and neo-nazi party in the Czech Republic. The party was founded by Tomáš Vandas. In 2010 the party was banned, making it the first instance of banning a party for its ideology in the modern history of the Czech Republic. The party was transformed into a "Party of Citizens of the Czech Republic", later renamed to Workers' Party of Social Justice.
The SNK European Democrats is a political party in the Czech Republic, led by Zdeňka Marková. The first regular chairperson of this party was Jana Hybášková. The party was created in January 2006 by the merger of two Czech political parties – SNK Union of Independents, led by the former Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec, and the European Democrats, led by Jan Kasl, the former Mayor of the City of Prague.

A legislative election in the Czech Republic took place on 28–29 May 2010 to elect the members of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic. The election had been expected to take place sometime before the end of 2009, but was postponed due to legal challenges. Before the election, the country had been governed by a caretaker administration headed by Jan Fischer. The Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was the front-runner of the election and its leader Jiří Paroubek was favourite to become the new Prime Minister.
Early legislative elections were held in the Czech Republic on 25 and 26 October 2013, seven months before the constitutional expiry of the elected parliament's four year legislative term.

The 2017 Czech legislative election was held in the Czech Republic on 20 and 21 October 2017. All 200 members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected and the leader of the resultant government – Andrej Babiš of ANO 2011, became the Prime Minister.
Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 7 and 8 October 2016, with a second round on 14 and 15 of October. The first round was held alongside regional elections and several municipal referendums, notably in a referendum in Brno on the location of the town's train station.
