David Jackson KC is a Judge in the Supreme Court of Queensland which is the highest ranking court in the Australian State of Queensland. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Queensland on 8 October 2012. [1]

Career

Justice Jackson began his career at the Bar on 14 September 1977, where he was a pupil of John Dowsett. During his 35 years as a barrister, Jackson J predominantly practised in the field of commercial law, specialising in resource and mining law. On 29 November 1990, he was appointed Queen's Counsel. [2]

While at the Bar, Jackson J was a member of the council of the Bar Association of Queensland and a director of the Association between 2011 and 2013. His Honour also served as a member of the Supreme Court Library Committee in 2012. [3]

On 8 October 2012, his Honour was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland. His was the first swearing-in ceremony to take place in the Banco Court of the Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law.

In August 2014, Jackson J was appointed as Chair of the Queensland Law Reform Commission. [4] Under his Honour's leadership, the Law Reform Commission published - amongst others - the Review of consent laws and the excuse of mistake of fact, the Review of termination of pregnancy laws (which led to the introduction of the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018), a Report on the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, and a Report on Expunging criminal convictions for historical gay sex offences. He was known as one of Australia's leading federalist judges although he presided over the High Court when decisions such as Koowarta v Bjelke-Petersen in 1982 and Commonwealth v Tasmania expanded the powers of the Commonwealth at the expense of the states. Gibbs dissented from the majority verdict in both cases. On 3 August 2012, the Supreme Court of Queensland Library opened the Sir Harry Gibbs Legal Heritage Centre. It is the only legal heritage museum of its kind in Queensland and features a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and legacy of Sir Harry Gibbs.

The Honourable Justice James Burrows ThomasAM KC was a judge on the Supreme Court of Queensland (1998–2002), which is the highest ranking court in the Australian State of Queensland.

Hugh Denis Macrossan was a politician and judge in Queensland, a State of Australia. He was elected as a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and was later to become a judge and also the Chief Justice of Queensland. He was the son of a prominent Queensland politician, and he was elected as a member of parliament. He served as a judge from 1926, until his appointment as chief justice in 1940 and his death later that year. He was the shortest serving chief justice in Queensland history, serving only one month, and was one of only two chief justices to have a brother and nephew served as chief justice.

John Murtagh Macrossan was a distinguished barrister, chancellor and judge in Queensland, Australia. He was the 16th Chief Justice of Queensland and the third person from the Macrossan family to occupy that position. His grandfather John Murtagh Macrossan was Colonial Secretary for Queensland and his two uncles Hugh Denis Macrossan and Neal William Macrossan were also Chief Justice of Queensland.
