Dendronotus lacteus is a species of sea slug, a dendronotid nudibranch, a shell-less marine gastropod mollusc in the family Dendronotidae. [2]

Distribution

This species was described from a specimen collected at the entrance to Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland, Irish Sea. It was long considered to be a synonym of Dendronotus frondosus but separated by Thollesson in 2000 using the technique of allozyme electrophoresis. [3] This was confirmed with DNA sequencing in 2015. [4] The species is known from the Irish Sea north to Spitsbergen, Franz Josef Land, and the Barents Sea. [4]

Nudibranchs are a group of soft-bodied marine gastropod molluscs that shed their shells after their larval stage. They are noted for their often extraordinary colours and striking forms, and they have been given colourful nicknames to match, such as "clown", "marigold", "splendid", "dancer", "dragon", and "sea rabbit". Currently, about 3,000 valid species of nudibranchs are known.

In 2020 a integrative molecular and morphological study showed that P. quadrilineata was a complex of two species in the NE Atlantic and one of these species was given the new name Polycera norvegica.
