Akram Zaatari is a filmmaker, photographer, archival artist and curator. In 1997, he co-founded the Arab Image Foundation with photographers Fouad Elkoury, and Samer Mohdad. His work is largely based on collecting, studying and archiving the photographic history of the Arab World.

Zorio's artwork shows his fascination with natural processes, alchemical transformation, and the release of energy. His sculptures, paintings, and performances are often read as metaphors for revolutionary human action, transformation, and creativity. He is known for his use of materials including: incandescent electric light tubes, steel, pitch, motifs, and processes through the use of evaporation and oxidation. He also creates precarious installations using fragile materials such as Stella di Bronzo and Acidi within his work.

Moon Kyungwon is a Seoul-based artist who received her Masters of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and Ph.D in Visual Communication from Yonsei University, South Korea. Moon held her solo exhibition at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in 2004. Her recent exhibitions include Poiesis of Collective Intelligence at Yamaguchi Center Arts and Media in 2013 and A Different Similarity at BOCUM Museum, Germany in 2010. In 2012, Moon and a fellow artist, Jeon Joonho, participated in Documenta (13) in Kassel, Germany and collectively received the 2012 Noon Award Grand Prize and 2012 Korea Artist Prize at Gwangju Biennale. In 2013, the two artists put on a large-scale exhibition called News from Nowhere at the Sullivan Galleries inside the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Curated by Sook-Kyung Lee from Tate Modern, Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho were selected to showcase their collaborative video installation, The Ways of Folding Space and Flying at the Korean Pavilion for 2015 Venice Biennale. Moon currently works and resides in Seoul, South Korea and teaches at the College of Art and Design, Ewha Womans University

documenta X was the tenth edition of documenta, a quinquennial contemporary art exhibition. It was held between 21 June and 28 September 1997 in Kassel, Germany. The artistic director was Catherine David. This was the first time a woman was appointed as artistic director of documenta. It is also the first time that the website of the exhibition was conceived as an artistic part of it. Catherine David chose the Swiss curator Simon Lamunière to conceive, design and curate the project. Part of documenta X was the experimental performance space and digital platform "Hybrid WorkSpace", curated by Klaus Biesenbach, Nancy Spector, and Hans-Ulrich Obrist. The space was designed by architect Eicke Becker and featured important performances, among them the famous Christoph Schlingensief performance titled "Mein Filz, mein Fett, mein Hase, 48 Stunden Überleben für Deutschland" during which several artists were arrested. Florian Schneider used "Hybrid WorkSpace" as an opportunity to initiate the No one is illegal network.
Documenta11 was the eleventh edition of documenta, a quinquennial contemporary art exhibition. It was held between 8 June and 15 September 2002 in Kassel, Germany. The artistic director was Okwui Enwezor.

The Vertical Earth Kilometer is a permanent art installation created by Walter De Maria in Friedrichsplatz Park in front of the Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany. The Vertical Earth Kilometer is a solid brass rod, one kilometer (3,280.84 ft.) in length and 2 inches (5.1 cm) in diameter. It is inserted into the earth so that its top is flush to the ground and embedded in a two-by-two-meter red sandstone square. Installed in 1977 during documenta 6, it has been on permanent view ever since. The Vertical Earth Kilometer is maintained by the Dia Art Foundation as one of the twelve locations and sites they manage.
