This is a list of the 42 comarques into which Catalonia is divided. A comarca is a group of municipalities, roughly equivalent to a "county" in the U.S.A. or the U.K. However, in the context of Catalonia, the term "county" can be a bit misleading, because in medieval Catalonia, aside from the kings of Aragon, the most important rulers were counts, notably the Counts of Barcelona and of Urgell. Comarques have no particular relation to the "counties" that were ruled by counts.
El Pont de Suert is a town and municipality, and the capital of the comarca of Alta Ribagorça, in the province of Lleida, in Catalonia, Spain. It is located at 838 metres above sea level, on the banks of river Noguera Ribagorçana, a tributary to the Segre. Population 2,418 (2007).
Balaguer is the capital of the comarca of Noguera, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. It is located by the river Segre, a tributary to the Ebre. The municipality includes an exclave to the east. Balaguer also has a sister city in the western United States, Pacifica, California.
Tremp is a municipality in Catalonia, Spain, the capital of the comarca of the Pallars Jussà. It is the largest municipality in Catalonia in terms of area, accounting for nearly a quarter of the total area of the comarca.
Roda de Ter is a municipality in the comarca of Osona, province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, near Vic, on the Ter River above the Sau Reservoir. Population: 5,435 (2004), area: 2.18 km². Its church is dedicated to St. Peter. Main monuments: Pont Vell and the Capella del Sòl del Pont. The Virgin Mary, La Mare de Déu del Sòl del Pont is the patron of the village.
Calaf is the main town in the northern portion of the comarca of the Anoia in Catalonia, Spain, situated on the Calaf Plain. The town holds an important weekly livestock market.
Ponts is a municipality and a town in the comarca of the Noguera in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the left bank of the Segre river near its confluence with the Llobregós river and at the point where the routes from Calaf and Cervera meet the route from Lleida to La Seu d'Urgell.
Castellbisbal is a municipality in the comarca of Vallès Occidental in Catalonia. It is situated on the left bank of the Llobregat river at its confluence with the Rubí river. The town is served by the A-7 autopista, the main N-II road and the RENFE railway line R4 between Barcelona and València.
Coll de Nargó is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Urgell in Catalonia, a region of Spain. It is situated in the Segre valley by the Oliana reservoir. The municipality is served by the C-14 road between Ponts and La Seu d'Urgell, the L-511 road to Isona and the L-401 road to Sant Llorenç de Morunys. The Romanesque church of Sant Climent dates from the eleventh century, and has a rectangular pre-Romanesque bell-tower.
Organyà is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Urgell in Catalonia. It is situated on the right bank of the Segre river below the Trespons gorge, and is served by the C-14 road between Ponts and La Seu d'Urgell. There is a monument to the Homilies d'Organyà, a 12th or 13th century collection of sermons which is the oldest literary text in the Catalan language to survive in its entirety, discovered in the town in 1904.
Artesa de Segre is a municipality in the comarca of the Noguera in Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in the valley of the Segre river, between Ponts and Balaguer. The municipal territory extends as far as the confluence of the Segre with the Boix. The Urgell canal runs through the municipality to the south of the Segre. The municipality is served by the C-1313 road between Balaguer and Ponts, and is linked to Agramunt by the L-302 road.
Conca de Dalt is a municipality (municipi) in the comarca of the Pallars Jussà in Catalonia, Spain. The municipal territory extends to both the east and west of la Pobla de Segur, on the sides of the valley of the Noguera Pallaresa river. The municipality was known as Pallars Jussà from its formation in 1969 until 1995, when the name was changed to avoid confusion with the comarca.
