Evergreen, also known as Evergreen Valley, is a large district of San Jose, California, located in East San Jose.
Evergreen was originally part of Rancho Yerba Buena, a Mexican-era rancho grant given to Antonio Chaboya, a member of a prominent, local Californio family, by Governor José Figueroa. The Chaboya family played an important role in the development of the area and is memorialized in Evergreen through various place names, such as Chaboya Middle School, Chaboya Park, Chaboya Road, and the Chaboya neighborhood of Evergreen.
Evergreen was the site of gliding experiments in 1911 by John J. Montgomery, an important figure in pioneering aeronautics. In his honor the local community has established John J. Montgomery Elementary School, Montgomery Park (City of San Jose). [1]
Montgomery's last glider, named "The Evergreen", after the San Jose district, was restored by the Smithsonian Institution and is currently on display at the San Diego Air and Space Museum in San Diego, California.
Evergreen is located in East San Jose. The Alum Rock district is located north of Evergreen and Silver Creek Valley (sometimes considered part of Evergreen) is located south of Evergreen. To the east of Evergreen is the Diablo Range.
Waterways in Evergreen include Thompson Creek, Upper Silver Creek and Lower Silver Creek.
The area is served by Evergreen Elementary School District and East Side Union High School District. Evergreen Valley High School with an API score of 10 in 2016 and Silver Creek High School with an API score of 9 in 2016 are the primary comprehensive high schools to serve Evergreen. [2]
Evergreen Valley College is at the base of the foothills of the Diablo Range. [3]

On September 12, 1966, the State Historic Preservation Office designated the Montgomery Hill as a California historical landmark #813. A description on the commemorative plaque reads: "Three-quarters of a mile northeast is Montgomery Hill, site of the 55 successful flights of John Joseph Montgomery's 'aeroplane' that demonstrated aerodynamic developments still indispensable to modern aircraft. Montgomery combined his engineering skill with the basic principles of aerodynamics that he discovered to produce a heavier-than-air flying machine which had complete control: cambered wing, rear stabilizer, flexible wingtips, and wing-warping aileron." Coyote Creek is a river that flows through the Santa Clara Valley in Northern California. Its source is on Mount Sizer, in the mountains east of Morgan Hill. Before being elected to the California State Senate, Cortese served on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors for 12 years, as a Councilmember and Vice Mayor for the City of San Jose for eight years, and for eight years as a trustee for the East Side Union High School District in San Jose. Cortese ran for mayor of San Jose and won the primary, losing the general election to District 3 councilmember Sam Liccardo.

The Eastridge Transit Center is a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) bus terminal located at the Eastridge Mall in the Evergreen District of San Jose, California. The station is located alongside Capitol Expressway near Tully Road.
Eastridge, officially Eastridge Center, is a shopping mall in San Jose, California, located in the Evergreen district of East San Jose. Eastridge opened as the largest mall on the West Coast in 1971 and has been redesigned multiple times throughout its history, most recently in 2017. Eastridge serves as an important community hub in Evergreen and the larger East Side, hosting farmers markets, holiday celebrations, and community events. The anchor stores are JCPenney, Macy's, AMC Theatres, Round 1 Entertainment, and 24 Hour Fitness.

Rancho Yerba Buena or Rancho Socayre was a 24,332-acre (98.47 km2) Mexican land grant in present day Santa Clara County, California given in 1833 by Governor José Figueroa to Antonio Chaboya. The grant was between Coyote Creek on the west and the foothills, and encompassed present day Evergreen neighborhood of southeast San José.
Thompson Creek is a 10.8-mile-long (17.4 km) northwestward-flowing stream currently originating on the southern slopes of Mount Misery in the western foothills of the Diablo Range. It flows along San Felipe Road then through Evergreen Valley in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California where it was extended in 1970 to Lower Silver Creek. The creek was one of several that fed into the marshy area known as Laguna Socayre, where the Lake Cunningham flood retention basin is now.
Upper Silver Creek is a 8.3-mile-long (13.4 km) northwestward-flowing stream originating in the Edenvale Hills in southeast San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. It was diverted for flood control due west where it is tributary to Coyote Creek, whose waters flow to south San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
Lower Silver Creek is a 4.7-mile-long (7.6 km) northwest and westward-flowing stream currently originating just north of Lake Cunningham in Evergreen Valley in southeast San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. It is tributary to Coyote Creek, whose waters flow to south San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
Montgomery Hill, named after John Joseph Montgomery, is a park located in the Evergreen District of San Jose, California. Montgomery Hill overlooks Evergreen Valley College, which has an observatory adjacent to the park. The park contains an unpaved trail system that extends for 1.2 miles along Evergreen Creek and loops along the peak of the hill for around 0.4 miles. Along the paths are interpretive signs, which cover the history of John Joseph Montgomery, who used the hill to test and launch his glider.
