Field hockey at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang was held at the GBK Hockey Field, Jakarta, Indonesia from 19 August to 1 September 2018. A total of twelve men's and ten women's teams competed in each respective tournament.
The tournaments served as qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympics. [1]

The field hockey tournament at the 2003 Pan American Games was held in the Santo Domingo Stadium, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from August 1–17, 2003. It served as a qualification tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. First place received a ticket for the Olympic tournament. The men competed for the tenth time at the Pan Americans, the women for the fifth time.
Field hockey was a sport at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo which took place from 24 July to 6 August 2021 at the Oi Seaside Park. Twenty-four teams competed in the tournament.
The 2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League Semifinals were the third stage of the 2016–17 edition of the Men's FIH Hockey World League. It took place in June and July 2017. A total of 20 teams competed in 2 events in this round of the tournament playing for 7 berths in the Final, to be played between 2 and 10 December 2017 in Bhubaneswar, India.
Field hockey competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto were held from 13 to 25 July 2015, at the Pan Am / Parapan Am Fields, which are located on the back campus of the University of Toronto. A total of eight men's and women's teams will compete in each respective tournament.

The 2017 Men's EuroHockey Championship II was the seventh edition of the EuroHockey Championship II, the second level of the European field hockey championships. It was held from the 6th to the 12th of August 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland. The tournament also served as a direct qualifier for the 2019 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship, with the winner Scotland and runner-up Wales qualifying.
The 2018 Women's EuroHockey Indoor Nations Championship was the 19th edition of the tournament. It took place from 19 to 21 January 2018 in Prague, Czech Republic.
Both the men's and the women's field hockey competitions at the 2018 South American Games were the third inclusion of hockey at the South American Games. Both tournaments were held in conjunction with one another between 29 May – 7 June 2018 at Estadio Félix Capriles in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Twelve teams qualified for the men's field hockey at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Twelve teams qualified for the women's field hockey at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Each of the Continental Champions from five confederations received an automatic berth. Japan as the host nation qualified automatically. In addition, the remaining six nations will be determined by an Olympic qualification event. As hosts Japan also won the Asian Games title, a seventh quota place was added to the Olympic qualification event.
The EuroHockey Championship III 2017 was the seventh edition of the EuroHockey Championship III, the third tier of the European field hockey championships. It was held from 30 July until 5 August 2017 in Sveti Ivan Zelina, Croatia. The tournament also allowed for promotion to the 2019 Men's EuroHockey Championship II, with the champions (Belarus) and runners-up (Italy) being promoted.
