South Korea participated in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia from 18 August to 2 September 2018. It was the 18th appearance of the country at the Asian Games, except the first edition in Delhi. As one of the best competitors at the Games, South Korea's best achievement was in the 2002 Busan, with the acquisition of 96 gold, 80 silver and 84 bronze medals. At the latest edition in 2014 Incheon, the country had collected 79 gold, 71 silver, and 84 bronze medals.

Kazakhstan participated in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, from 18 August to 2 September 2018.

Twelve teams qualified for the men's field hockey at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Twelve teams qualified for the women's field hockey at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Each of the Continental Champions from five confederations received an automatic berth. Japan as the host nation qualified automatically. In addition, the remaining six nations will be determined by an Olympic qualification event. As hosts Japan also won the Asian Games title, a seventh quota place was added to the Olympic qualification event.

Ten national teams will compete in the women's field hockey tournament at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. A maximum of eighteen players were officially enrolled in each squad.

The tournament took place over a six-day period, beginning on 6 October, culminating with medal finals on 12 October. All games were played at the Tianjin Olympic Center in Tianjin, China.

On 15 March 2022 it was announced the tournament would be held at the GBK Hockey Field in Jakarta, Indonesia from 23 May to 1 June 2022.
