Field hockey at the Mediterranean Games has been played consistently since 1955 for men until 1979. The Spain national team was the most successful men's team.

The Spanish Olympic Committee sent the nation's third largest delegation in history to the Games. A total of 317 athletes, 177 men and 140 women, competed in 26 sports.

The Netherlands competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. Dutch athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games since its official debut in 1908. Netherlands, however, boycotted the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, because of the Soviet invasion of Hungary. The Netherlands National Olympic Committee sent a total of 210 athletes to the Games, 134 men and 76 women, to compete in 21 sports. Baseball, field hockey, and men's volleyball were the only team-based sports in which the Netherlands had its representation at these Games. There was only a single competitor in women's fencing.

The men's field hockey tournament at the 1956 Summer Olympics was the eighth edition of the field hockey event for men at the Summer Olympics. It was contested from 23 November to 6 December, with twelve participating teams. Only men competed in field hockey at these Games.

Afghanistan sent a delegation to compete at the 1936 Summer Olympics Berlin, Germany, from 1 to 16 August 1936. This was the nation's first appearance at a Summer Olympic Games and sent 19 competitors. Eighteen of them were supposed to compete in the field hockey where they finished runner up in their group and not advancing to the knockout stage. Out of them only 12 competed in field hockey. Two, including one hockey player, competed in the sport of athletics with Mohammad Khan competing in the 100 meters sprint and long jump, failing to advance to the next stage of either of those events. He was also entered as a field hockey player. However, he did not start in field hockey. Abdul Rahim competed in the shot put with not advancing to the final.

Twelve national teams competed in the men's Olympic field hockey tournament at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Sixteen players were officially enrolled in each squad.

Field hockey made its debut at the Modern Olympic Games as a men's competition in the 1908 Games in London. It was removed from the Olympic schedule of the Summer Olympic Games for the 1924 Paris Games and was reintroduced in the 1928 Amsterdam Games. The Women's field hockey was introduced into the Olympic programme at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Field hockey at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held over a fourteen-day period beginning on 10 August, culminating with the medal finals on 22 and 23 August. All games were played at the hockey field constructed on the Olympic Green.

It took place over a thirteen-day period beginning on 6 August, and culminated with the medal finals on 18 August. All games were played at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Field hockey competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru were scheduled to be held from July 30 to August 10. The venue for the competition is the Hockey field located at the Villa María del Triunfo cluster. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams competed in each tournament. This means a total of 256 athletes are scheduled to compete.

Field hockey competitions at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile were scheduled to be held from 25 October to 4 November 2023. It was the fifteenth edition of the field hockey event at the Pan American Games. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams competed in each tournament. The games were played at the Field Hockey Training Center, located in the National Stadium Park cluster in Santiago.
