Gulzarilal Nanda was an Indian politician and economist who specialised in labour issues. He was the Interim Prime Minister of India for two 13-day tenures following the deaths of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964 and Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966 respectively. Both his terms ended after the ruling Indian National Congress's parliamentary party elected a new prime minister. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1997.

The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) is the oldest trade union federation in India. It is associated with the Communist Party of India. According to provisional statistics from the Ministry of Labour, AITUC had a membership of 14.2 million in 2013. It was founded on 31 October 1920 with Lala Lajpat Rai as its first president.
The Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) was formed by the Socialists in 1948 but has little real connection with the Socialist Party. It is one of the least political and most pragmatic trade-union federations in India. The HMS is affiliated with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions.

The All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) is the largest trade union of Indian Railways workers with a membership of 1.4 million. AIRF was founded on 16 February 1925. It is affiliated with the socialist trade union centre Hind Mazdoor Sabha.
Rastriya Colliery Majdoor Sangh is a trade union of colliery workers of India. It is affiliated by ITUC affiliated Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), a trade union group made by Indian National Congress leaders. Erstwhile 'Colliery Majdoor Sangh' was founded by the union of veteran trade unionists Bindeshwari Dubey, Ram Narayan Sharma, Kanti Mehta, S. Dasgupta, B.P.Sinha, Murlidhar Prasad and few others. They then managed to get it affiliated by Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC). Later when Bindeshwari Dubey became its President in the 1970s he renamed it from 'Colliery Majdoor Sangh' to 'Rashtriya Colliery Majdoor Sangh'. Earlier he was its vice president and general secretary.
