The Flycatcher (KL/MSS-6720) radarsystem is a dual I/J/K-Band short range air defense fire control system. It has an all-weather capability and track-while-scan capability and can simultaneously control three anti-aircraft guns or SAM rocket launchers. The radar system used in the Flycatcher is identical to the system used in the PRTL/Cheetah, the Dutch version of the self-propelled anti-aircraft gun Gepard. The Goalkeeper CIWS uses a similar radar system.

The Flycatcher was developed by Hollandse Signaal Apparaten B.V. or in short Signaal or HSA (now Thales Nederland) as successor for their successful L4/5 (KL/MSS-3012) fire control system.

Description

The Flycatcher system is contained within a towed trailer. Mounted on the roof of it are a search radar and a tracking radar with coaxial passive daylight TV tracking system. [1] The Flycatcher system is built into a standard military Craig container, with a semi-detachable trailer bogey. The antennas are retractable to facilitate air transport the Flycatcher, either as a slung load or as fixed wing cargo. The operator's compartment and the electronics are protected by the controlled environment provided by the Craig shelter. [2] The container houses a crew of two, and a power generator is attached to the front of the container.

Guns or launchers are connected to the Flycatcher with a regular infantry field wire. Maximum distance from the Flycatcher to the guns or launchers is ±1000 metres. An unobstructed line-of-sight is required between the Flycatcher and each guns or launcher in order to align the gun or launcher with the Flycatcher. Ballistic factors such as temperature, humidity, wind direction and velocity as well as gun data such as muzzle velocity are manually or via sensor interface entered into the fire-control system of the Flycatcher. Using the tracking radar system to track a weather balloon, the Flycatcher can obtain on-the-spot wind speed and direction.

Operational history

Netherlands

The KL/MSS-6720 Flycatcher radar system is in use by the Royal Netherlands Air Force since 1979. The 25 Royal Netherlands Air Force Flycatchers are used in a very short range air defence (VSHORAD) configuration in combination with modified Bofors 40L70 guns. They were used for static air base defense.

Thirty Flycatcher systems were supplied to the Royal Netherlands Army under a contract placed in early 1987. Production, which commenced immediately, result ed in the first units being delivered in April 1989. Deliveries were completed within 36 months. The Royal Netherlands Army Flycatchers are used in combination with modified Bofors 40L70 guns.

India

In August 1985 India ordered the Signaal Flycatcher, although only a limited number was built in the Netherlands. [3] Extensive production of Flycatcher for the Indian Armed Forces is being undertaken by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) . [4]

The Indian Flycatchers were to be deployed with Bofors 40 mm L/60 gun and Bofors 40 mm Automatic Gun L/70 AA guns, but might also be used to guide the Trishul Surface-to-air missile [5]

United States

The United States acquired one copy of the Flycatcher fire control system, which was delivered to the United States Air Force in mid-1984. Trials have been conducted with the system in the Nevada desert. There have been no further developments.

Thailand

Twelve Flycatcher systems were ordered by Thailand in 1981. Some are deployed on a basis of one radar supporting a battery of six gun mountings. In 2005 the Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced the delivery of eight Flycatcher search and tracking radar fire-control systems for low-level air defense with 16 Bofors Defense 40 mm L/70 guns to Thailand through Thales. In a second deal, the MoD has sold 13 Thales Flycatcher radar systems, 34 Bofors 40 mm L/70 guns and a training simulator to Thales. The Hengelo, Netherlands-based company will sell-on eight of these Flycatchers and 16 guns to Thailand. [6]

It then launches three laser beam-riding submunitions, increasing the likelihood of a successful hit on the target. Starstreak has been in service with the British Army since 1997. In 2012 Thales relaunched the system as ForceSHIELD.

<i>Halifax</i>-class frigate

The Halifax-class frigate, also referred to as the City class, is a class of multi-role patrol frigates that have served the Royal Canadian Navy since 1992. The class is the outcome of the Canadian Patrol Frigate Project, which dates to the mid-1970s. HMCS Halifax was the first of an eventual twelve Canadian-designed and Canadian-built vessels which combine traditional anti-submarine capabilities with systems to deal with surface and air threats as well. All ships of the class are named after a major city in each province plus the cities of Ottawa and Montreal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bofors 40 mm L/60 gun</span> Autocannon family by Bofors

The Bofors 40 mm Automatic Gun L/60 is an anti-aircraft autocannon, designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors. The gun was designed as an intermediate anti-aircraft gun, filling the gap between fast firing close-range small calibre anti-aircraft guns and slower firing long-range high calibre anti-aircraft guns, a role which previously was filled by older outdated guns. The Bofors 40 mm L/60 was for its time perfectly suited for this role and outperformed competing designs in the years leading up to World War II in both effectiveness and reliability.

Seacat was a British short-range surface-to-air missile system intended to replace the ubiquitous Bofors 40 mm gun aboard warships of all sizes. BAP <i>Almirante Grau</i> (CLM-81) De Zeven Provinciën-class cruiser

BAPAlmirante Grau(CLM-81) is a De Zeven Provinciën-class cruiser that served in the Dutch and Peruvian navies. Completed for the Dutch in 1953 as HNLMS De Ruyter (C801), she was acquired by Peru in 1973 and served as fleet flagship. Almirante Grau underwent a major modernization program between 1985 and 1988 during which she was fitted with new weapons and electronics. She was the last gun cruiser in service in any navy before being decommissioned on 26 September 2017. In 2019, it was to be said that she would be preserved as a museum ship. However, it was later announced on 14 February 2022 that the ship would put up for sale with an asking price of 4,180,000 soles.

<i>Kasturi</i>-class corvette

The Kasturi-class corvettes are two ships of the Royal Malaysian Navy, KD Kasturi and KD Lekir. They were acquired in the mid-1980s. The two ships constitute the Malaysian Navy's 22nd Corvette Squadron, their homeport being Lumut. After about 25 years of service, they underwent an extensive modernisation known as Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) starting in 2009, enabling them to be employed for another 10 to 15 years. They have since been returned to active duty.

<i>Jacob van Heemskerck</i>-class frigate

The Jacob van Heemskerck-class frigate was a class of frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy. They were designed to be an air defence version of the Kortenaer class. The helicopter was replaced by a Standard medium range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and associated radars. Two ships were built for the Royal Netherlands Navy. In 2005 they were sold to the Chilean Navy.

The Saab Giraffe Radar is a family of land and naval two- or three-dimensional G/H-band passive electronically scanned array radar-based surveillance and air defense command and control systems tailored for operations with medium- and Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD) missile or gun systems or for use as gap-fillers in a larger air defense system. The radar gets its name from the distinctive folding mast which when deployed allows the radar to see over nearby terrain features such as trees, extending its effective range against low-level air targets. The first systems were produced in 1977. By 2007, some 450 units of all types are reported as having been delivered.

SMART-S Mk2(Signaal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Tracking, S band Mk2) is a naval medium to long-range air and surface surveillance multibeam passive electronically scanned array 3D radar designed by Thales Nederland, formerly Hollandse Signaalapparaten (Signaal). While the original SMART-S radar was only produced in small numbers, SMART-S Mk2 is very successful. Only six years after its introduction, 30 systems were sold to navies all over the world. SMART-S Mk2 radar is equipped with transmitter/receiver (T/R) modules manufactured by Turkish defence company Aselsan. The radar transmitter/receiver (T/R) modules for the radar are purchased by Thales from Aselsan.

KD <i>Kasturi</i> (F-25)

KD Kasturi is the lead ship of Kasturi-class corvette of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). She were acquired in the 1980s and served under 22nd Corvette Squadron of RMN and based in Lumut Perak. Kasturi is based on HDW's FS 1500 design.

KD <i>Lekir</i> (F-26)

KD Lekir is the second ship of Kasturi-class corvette currently serving in the Royal Malaysian Navy. Together with her sister ship Kasturi, Lekir serves in the 22nd Corvette Squadron of the Royal Malaysian Navy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bofors 40 mm Automatic Gun L/70</span> Autocannon

The Bofors 40 mm Automatic Gun L/70,, is a multi-purpose autocannon developed by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors during the second half of the 1940s as a modern replacement for their extremely successful World War II-era Bofors 40 mm L/60 gun-design. It was initially intended as a dedicated anti-aircraft weapon, being sold as Bofors 40 mm Automatic A.A. Gun L/70, but has since its conception been redeveloped into a dedicated multi-purpose weapon capable of firing both sabot projectiles and programmable ammunition. The Bofors 40 mm L/70 design never achieved the same popularity and historical status as the original L/60 design but has still seen great export and popularity to this day, having been adopted by around 40 different nations and even being accepted as NATO-standard in November 1953. It is still being produced and sold, and several variants exist for both field and naval applications. A notable variant is the Bofors 40/70B "light armoured vehicle variant" which is in use on the Swedish Strf 9040 and Korean K21 infantry fighting vehicles.
