Forget What You Know is the third studio album by American rock band Midtown. Following the release of Living Well Is the Best Revenge (2002), MCA was merged into Geffen Records, and the band was not picked up by the latter label. The group spent time writing on their next album and following a meeting with Butch Walker, moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to start recording the new material. Walker headed the producing helm and Forget What You Know was recorded in late 2003 at Ruby Red Studios. The album is classified as an emo and pop punk release; its songs were compared with those of Division of Laura Lee, Recover and Jimmy Eat World.
The release of Forget What You Know was announced in April 2004 and the band embarked on a US tour, during which "Give It Up" was released as a single, and a music video for the song was released after the tour finished. Forget What You Know was released on June 29, 2004, through Columbia Records; it reached number 109 on the Billboard 200 and "Give It Up" peaked at number 32 on the Alternative Songs radio chart. Music critics gave the album a mixed reception with some complimenting its energy and sound, and others finding it average. Midtown went on two other US tours and performed shows in Australia and the UK, and embarked upon another US tour in late 2004. A music video for "Empty Like the Ocean" was released in March 2005 and a headlining US tour and a stint on the Warped Tour followed.
In 1999, Midtown signed to the independent label Drive-Thru Records and released their debut album Save the World, Lose the Girl (2000) through it. [1] Sometime afterwards, communication between the label and the group became difficult. Vocalist/bassist Gabe Saporta was concerned Drive-Thru were focussing their efforts on New Found Glory, which Saporta helped to sign with the label, rather than Midtown, and a public feud between Saporta and the label's founders Richard and Stefanie Reines ensued. [2] Drive-Thru had a distribution deal with major label MCA Records that allowed MCA to acquire Drive-Thru Records' bands over a period of time. [3] Midtown's next album Living Well Is the Best Revenge (2002) was a joint release by Drive-Thru and MCA. [4]
According to drummer Rob Hitt, MCA had a few groups that performed well commercially and Drive-Thru "wanted to put every other band into that same cookie-cutter mold. And we didn't want that." [1] Midtown later had negative experiences with the label, which wanted to feature the band in teen magazines. [1] Around the time, MCA had acquired acts that were dissimilar to Drive-Thru's bands; MCA was investing in the less-successful groups and lost a substantial amount of money. [1] Midtown then entered into a legal battle to leave Drive-Thru that lasted for a year. [5] By mid-2003, MCA was absorbed by Universal Music Group subsidiary Geffen Records, and its staff and roster were moved to Geffen. [6]
As the merger was occurring, Midtown was writing material for its next album. [1] Geffen believed the group was inactive due to their break from touring, and did not pick up the band from MCA. [1] Hitt said the band didn't wish to release a new album, despite "make it seem like we had all these things going on". [1] Saporta said "as far as anyone cared, we were dead. No one gave a shit" about the group by the time they were working on the next album. [5] Sometime afterwards, Midtown played a show with Butch Walker, after which Walker's manager started to manage the group. According to Saporta, after talking with Walker on another occasion, "he was like, 'Oh, I've heard your demos, I think they're great. I'd love to do your record'". [5] Saporta, having grown suspicious of people talking to him after the legal battle, was ambivalent to Walker's offer. [5] By October 2003, the band considered themselves free agents. [7] They temporarily moved to Atlanta, Georgia, [8] where recording sessions were held at Ruby Red Studios in Midtown Atlanta with Walker and Russ T serving as engineers. [9]
Despite not being fans of Walker's work, the group worked with him for the sessions. [5] They wanted a rawer sound compared to the polished direction of the last two albums, both of which were produced by Mark Trombino. [10] Saporta's said Walker's work was "all very slick" and they wanted to create something "a little more rock and roll". [5] Saporta said they aimed to make the record for themselves and that "[we] were just like, 'Okay, we're going to make an awesome record for ourselves and prove something to ourselves,' and that's all we cared about." [5] In addition to playing their usual instruments, Saporta did some programming and Hitt sang. [9] With recording lasting three weeks in November, the group recorded 18 songs. [11] All the recordings, but "Give it Up", were mixed by Walker and Russ T, and mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound in New York City. "Give It Up" was mixed by Jay Baumgardner and mastered by Vlado Meller at Sony Music Studios, also in New York City. [9]
Forget What You Know has been described as emo [12] and pop punk, having similarities with the work of Alkaline Trio. [13] [14] The album showcases more energy than the group's previous album [14] and highlights a moody atmosphere, [13] which was likely influenced by Midtown's battle with their former label. [14] Saporta' vocals were compared to those of the Wallflowers' frontman Jakob Dylan [13] and Millencolin, [15] leaning to a wail. [14] While writing the album, Saporta was "going through a tough time, where everything that I thought I knew was proven to be false and the world just started redefining itself". [5] The album, which has a darker overtone than Midtown's earlier work, is about the "realization that the reality that I knew was fake ... [and that] you're always going to be okay, there's always going to be something that gets you through in your new reality". [5]
Discussing the album title, the band said; "Forget what you know about the world; forget what you know about yourself. Forget what you think you know about Project Mayhem. Embrace nothingness, be everything." [16] The opening track "Armageddon." acts as an introduction and has gang vocals shouting the phrase "So hard to believe you what you're looking for" [14] before segueing into the post-punk track "To Our Savior", which is similar to the output of the Swedish band Division of Laura Lee. "Is It Me? Is It True?" features a toy piano and is followed by an instrumental interlude titled, "God Is Dead," which is an extrapolation of the vocal melody on the following track, "Whole New World." [14] "Help Me Sleep" was compared to the work of the band Recover. [15] The album's closing track "So Long as We Keep Our Bodies Numb We're Safe" ends with almost-10-minute-long loops of the phrases "You've had all the time in the world" and "You don't listen", [13] and due to its loops and length has been compared to "Goodbye Sky Harbor" (1999) by Jimmy Eat World. Forget What You Know was sent to several record labels [17] in early 2004. [11] On January 23, "Is It Me? Is It True?" was made available for download through AbsolutePunk . [18] On April 7, the release of Forget What You Know was announced for June 2004, [19] and that it would be released through Sony Music Entertainment imprint Columbia Records. In addition, the album's track listing was revealed. [16] "Give It Up" was released as a single on May 18 that year. [20] [16] Between late April and early June 2004, Midtown went on a co-headlining US tour with Armor for Sleep and Your Enemies Friends; they were supported on select dates by Time and Distance, the Working Title, Stars Hide Fire, Vise Versa, Emanuel and Lance's Hero. [21] Following this, they appeared at the Best Music Poll 2004 festival. [22] On June 12, a music video for "Give It Up" was released, together with a behind-the-scenes "making of" video. [16] Forget What You Know was released through Columbia Records on June 29, 2004. [19] It was subsequently released in Australia on August 16, Canada on August 24, and in Germany and the UK on September 24. [16]
To promote the album's release, Midtown performed a few in-store live shows. [16] In July and August 2004, the band went on tour with Lostprophets [23] and later played in Japan and Canada. [24] In September and October, the group appeared on the Rock Against Bush tour in the US. [25] The group then toured Australia and the UK with Hidden in Plain View. [16] They returned to the US in November for a tour with Matchbook Romance [26] and Hidden in Plain View. the Academy Is... and Name Taken appeared on select shows. [16] In mid-December, the group played three shows with Paulson, Senses Fail and Moneen, [27] and five shows with Fall Out Boy, the Academy Is... and Gym Class Heroes. [28] In March and April 2005, the group performed across the US as part of the Fueled By Ramen & Friends Tour. [29]
On March 18, 2005, a music video for "Empty Like the Ocean" was released. [30] At the end of April, the group appeared at The Bamboozle festival before embarking on a headlining tour with Plain White T's, Action Action and Rock Kills Kid. [31] The group was initially scheduled to appear on the Warped Tour between mid-June and mid-August [32] but pulled out of all of the shows except the last five. [33] The group disbanded later in the year, making Forget What You Know their last album release. [34] In a 2006 interview, guitarist Heath Saraceno explained that "it veered far away from any sort of resemblance to a democracy that it once had. One person in particular took all the control, and the rest of us were just kinda stuck there trying to give input and being shut down at almost every turn". [35] "Sister Golden Hair", a cover of the America song recorded during the album's sessions, was released in November 2006. [36]

Forget What You Know spent two weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 109 on the chart dated July 17, 2004. [39] "Give It Up" charted at number 32 on the Alternative Songs radio chart. [40]
The album received mixed reviews from most music critics. Exclaim! writer Liz Worth said "There isn't a weak track here, but there are some that really shine", particularly "Empty Like the Ocean" and "Hey Baby, Don't You Know That We're All Whores". [41] She also said the record would go down well with fans of punk's more melodic nature. [41] Kaj Roth of Melodic found the album a "well produced" release with "energetic" sounds, like those found on an archetypal emo record. [12] With neither any stand-outs or bad songs, Roth said Forget What You Know is a "solid good album to listen to". [12]
In a review for Blender , journalist Maura Johnston said the album only missteps when the tempo "slows down and [Midtown's] peppy embrace of nihilism and nothingness stops pogoing". [37] Ox-Fanzine 's Kid Dynamite viewed it as "unfortunately only mediocre", noting the "catchy melodies, polyphonic vocals, variety … the whole thing never seems too pop". [15] Punknews.org writer Brian Shultz said Saporta's vocals had "gone absolutely berserk. It almost sounds like he's trying to reach pitches he's incapable of making." [14] He regarded it as "more fluid and energized" than the group's preceding album but said it is "hardly as bold or invigorating" as their debut release. [14] AllMusic reviewer Johnny Loftus complimented the group's "leaner, more moody sound" despite them abandoning "sugar-high" hooks for "less direct yet still succinct songcraft". [13] Loftus said the release is not "a sun-and-sand summertime record" but it set the stage for "kids making the transition from goofy preteen pop-punk to bands like the Alkaline Trio". [13]

Something Corporate is an American rock band from Laguna Niguel, Orange County, California, formed in 1998. Their currently active line-up includes vocalist and pianist Andrew McMahon, guitarists Josh Partington and William Tell, bassist Kevin Page and drummer Brian Ireland.
North is the third and final studio album by American rock band Something Corporate. Near the beginning of the writing process for the album, vocalist and pianist Andrew McMahon and guitarist Josh Partington wanted it to "sound like a winter album", in contrast to their second album Leaving Through the Window (2002) which they viewed as a "summer album". After losing focus through constant touring, the group decided to record an album in Seattle, Washington. Recording took place at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle with producer Jim Wirt in May 2003. After relocating to Los Angeles, California, further tracking was done at 4th Street Recording in Santa Monica.
Leaving Through the Window is the second studio album and major-label debut by American rock band Something Corporate. Following the success of the Drive-Thru Records-released Audioboxer (2001) EP, the band signed to their label distributor MCA Records in late 2001 after the EP caught their attention. The three-month recording process for Leaving Through the Window took place in studios across California and Florida, with Jim Wirt acting as producer. A few songs from previous releases were re-recorded for inclusion on the album; the material was anywhere from three months to three years old. A music video was made for "If You C Jordan" in early 2002; the group then embarked on a three-month long US tour.
Drive-Thru Records was a California-based independent record label owned by siblings Richard and Stefanie Reines. The label was partially responsible for popularizing the pop-punk/emo merger sound of the early to mid-2000s. After facing financial obstacles in getting their bands' music into stores, Drive-Thru entered into a distribution deal with MCA/Universal. In 2003 MCA was dissolved and folded into Geffen Records. One of the clauses of that agreement was MCA/Geffen being able to sign any band of their choosing from Drive-Thru's roster.
Catalyst is the fourth studio album by American rock band New Found Glory, released on May 18, 2004 through Drive-Thru and Geffen Records. It was the band's last album to be produced by Neal Avron until 2011's Radiosurgery.
Fenix TX is an American pop punk band. The band originally formed as Riverfenix in 1995 in Houston, Texas. Under that name, they independently released an EP, G.B.O.H., and an album, Riverfenix, before having to change their name due to a cease and desist order from the estate of actor River Phoenix. Following the change of name, they signed with major label MCA Records in 1999. On MCA, they released two further albums, 1999's Fenix TX and 2001's Lechuza, which collectively sold over 600,000 units. The band broke up in 2002 over creative differences.
Let It Enfold You is the debut studio album by American rock band Senses Fail, released on September 7, 2004, through Vagrant Records. After finalizing their line-up, the band released their debut EP, From the Depths of Dreams, in 2002, which attracted the attention of Drive-Thru Records. The label signed Senses Fail; it had a distribution deal with MCA Records, which allowed them to acquire acts from Drive-Thru. Recording for the band's debut occurred at several studios in New Jersey in April 2003 with producer Steve Evetts. Additional recording took place at the end of the year. Described as an emo and screamo record, several of the songs on Let It Enfold You were influenced by poetry and literature.
Finch is an American post-hardcore band from Temecula, California. The band is best known for their single "What It Is to Burn" from the album of the same name (2002). Their second album, Say Hello to Sunshine (2005), peaked within the top 30 on the Billboard 200. Following setbacks within the group, they released the album Back to Oblivion (2014).
What It Is to Burn is the debut studio album by American rock band Finch. It was released on March 12, 2002, through MCA and Drive-Thru Records. After finalizing their line-up, Finch signed to Drive-Thru. Recording for the album took place between June and September 2001 with producer Mark Trombino. A music video for "Letters to You" was released in January 2003. The title-track "What Is It to Burn" was released as the lead single in January 2003, followed by the single "Letters to You" in April of that year. "New Beginnings"/"What It Is to Burn" was released as the third and final single on a double A-side in August 2003. "Letters to You" charted at number 39 on the UK Singles Chart, while "What It Is to Burn" charted within the top 40 of the US Alternative Songs and Mainstream Rock charts.
Dream to Make Believe is the debut studio album by American rock band Armor for Sleep. Following on from his previous band Random Task, Ben Jorgensen taught himself guitar and later recruited additional members to form Armor for Sleep. With some buzz, and the addition of manager Gabe Saporta, the band recorded their debut album with Ariel Rechtshaid at two studios in California: El Barrio in Van Nuys and Standard Electrical in Venice Beach. Dream to Make Believe mixed the space rock of Hum with the emo pop of the Get Up Kids; it tackled the topics of dreaming, time-travel and space.
Say Hello to Sunshine is the second studio album by American post-hardcore band Finch. Following the release of their debut album What It Is to Burn (2002), the group signed to MCA Records, which soon afterwards was absorbed into Geffen Records. Drummer Alex Pappas left the band in early 2004 and was replaced by Marc Allen. Sessions for the next album took place at a variety of studios with Jason Cupp, Ben Moore and the band producing the proceedings. Prior to the album's release, the band went on tour in the US and Europe, and "Bitemarks and Bloodstains" was released as a single in May 2005. Say Hello to Sunshine was released in June; further tours of the US, the UK and Japan followed soon after.
Midtown is an American pop-punk band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. Midtown was formed in November 1998 by three Rutgers University students, but quickly became a quartet. The group released three full-length studio albums and three extended plays before disbanding in 2005. In early 2014, Midtown reunited to play three shows, the first as a secret show at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, and the two remaining at the Skate And Surf Festival. They reunited for more shows in 2022 as openers on My Chemical Romance's reunion tour.

It followed the pop punk sound of their debut, and was compared to Good Charlotte and Fenix TX.
Save the World, Lose the Girl is the debut studio album by American rock band Midtown. Forming in 1998, Midtown released The Sacrifice of Life EP in 1999, and was signed to Drive-Thru Records shortly afterwards. They went to California to record with producer Mark Trombino at Doug Messenger Studios in July of that year. Save the World, Lose the Girl was released on February 15, 2000, and was met with a positive reaction from music critics, who complimented the vocal harmonies. It was promoted with tour of the United States until June, when they took a break. A music video for "Just Rock and Roll" was posted online later in the month. They participated in that year's Warped Tour, before touring Japan and three further treks of the US. A European tour with the Donots occurred in early 2001, and was followed by two US tours, a second appearance on Warped Tour, and a support slot for Blink-182.
Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! is the debut studio album by American indie pop band Hellogoodbye. Produced by Matt Mahaffey, Jeff Turzo, and Forrest Kline, the album was released on August 8, 2006 in the United States by Drive-Thru Records. The album's lead single, "Here ", reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum in the United States.
Cobra Starship was an American dance-rock band from New York City, New York, formed in 2005 by Gabe Saporta. He recorded the first album as a solo project, While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets. Saporta later enlisted guitarist Ryland Blackinton, bassist Alex Suarez, drummer Nate Novarro, and keytarist Victoria Asher, all of whom provide backing vocals.
Gabriel Eduardo Saporta is a Uruguayan-American musician and entrepreneur. From the years 2005 until 2015, he was the lead vocalist and founder of the electropop band Cobra Starship. On November 10, 2015, after nearly ten years and two Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits, Saporta announced that the band would stop its work, and that he would be focusing on helping other musicians through his new venture, The Artist Group. Prior to Cobra Starship, Saporta had been the lead singer, bassist, and lyricist for the punk band Midtown.
