Germany has officially participated in every Eurovision Song Contest since its inaugural edition in 1956, except in 1996 when its entry did not qualify past the audio-only pre-selection round, and consequently was not seen in the broadcast final and does not count as one of Germany's 67 appearances. No other country has been represented as many times. Along with France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, Germany is one of the "Big Five" countries that are automatically prequalified for the final, due to their participant broadcasters being the largest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The final is broadcast in Germany on ARD's flagship channel, Das Erste.

Switzerland was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 with the song "Dans le jardin de mon âme" written and performed by Francine Jordi. The Swiss participating broadcaster, the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, selected its entry through a national final. The broadcaster returned to the contest after a one-year absence following its relegation from 2001 as one of the bottom six entrants in 2000. Eight entries performed during the national final on 2 February 2002 where two rounds of public voting ultimately selected "Dans le jardin" performed by Francine Jordi as the winner. The song was later retitled as "Dans le jardin de mon âme".

The German participating broadcaster on behalf of ARD, Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), organised the national final Ein bisschen Glück in order to select their entry for the contest. The entry failed to make it through the pre-selection round, meaning Germany was not represented at the Eurovision Song Contest for the first and only time.

Made in Germany 1995–2011 was a concert tour by German band Rammstein in support of the compilation album of the same name. The tour consisted of two European legs in late 2011 and early 2012, one North American leg in mid-2012, and a final European leg in mid-2013 which mostly consisted of festivals and other open air shows. This tour marked the first time the band played in Ireland, as well as the last time they performed in arenas, since all their further tours took place in stadiums.
