Francesco De Piccoli (born 29 November 1937) is a former Italian boxer, who won the gold medal in the heavyweight division (+91 kg) at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.

Amateur career

De Piccoli started training in boxing in 1955, and won national heavyweight titles in 1959 and 1960. At the 1960 Olympics, he easily reached the final, in which he knocked out Daan Bekker after 90 seconds. He turned professional right after the Olympics. After retiring in 1965 he worked as a driving instructor. [1] [2]

Giovanni "Nino" Benvenuti is an Italian former professional boxer and actor. As an amateur he won a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, having previously won bronze at the 1983 Pan American Games and gold at the 1982 World Championships, all in the super heavyweight division.

Costică Dafinoiu was a light-heavyweight boxer from Romania. He took up boxing in 1969, winning a bronze medal at the 1976 Olympics, a gold and a silver medals at the Romanian National Amateur Boxing Championship and won the Golden belt international tournament organized by Romania in 1974. Ion Monea was a Romanian amateur boxer. He then moved up to the light-heavyweight division and won three more medals, at the 1967 and 1969 European championships and 1968 Olympics, losing on all three occasions to Danas Pozniakas. Joe Bygraves was a British heavyweight boxer. Bygraves turned professional in 1953, and after an impressive early career he successfully challenged Kitione Lave for the vacant Commonwealth Heavyweight belt in 1956. Bygraves defended the title on three occasions, knocking-out Henry Cooper and holding Dick Richardson to a draw before losing the championship to Joe Erskine. Bygraves immigrated to Britain as a youth but did not take British citizenship until the end of his fighting career in 1967.

Franco "Thunderbird" Wanyama in Kampala, was a Ugandan amateur middleweight and professional cruiser/heavyweight boxer of the 1980s, '90s and 2000s. He was an amateur representative of Uganda at middleweight in the Boxing at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, losing to eventual bronze medal winner Chris Sande of Kenya, and as a professional won the BeNeLux heavyweight title, BeNeLux cruiserweight title, Commonwealth cruiserweight title, and World Boxing Federation (WBF) cruiserweight title, and was a challenger for the Commonwealth cruiserweight title against Chris Okoh, his professional fighting weight varied from 181 lb, i.e. cruiserweight to 192 lb, i.e. heavyweight. Wanyama defeated notable fighters such as Jimmy Thunder, Carl Thompson and Johnny Nelson and was sparring partner to Vitali Klitschko & Wladimir Klitschko. He lived his last years in Rugby, Warwickshire, England and had 3 children, Shannon Wanyama, Nellie Wanyama and Wanga Wanyama.
