Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is an American reggae and jam band from Rochester, New York, founded in 2001 and known for their live performances and authentic roots reggae and dub sound. [1] [2]
Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad was formed in 2001 when brothers Chris O'Brian on drums and Matt O'Brian on guitar teamed up with their childhood friend, James Searl on vocals and bass. They started playing shows in their hometown of Rochester, New York and then moved to Ithaca, New York. [3] The band based their name on the fictional "Giant Panda Gypsy Blues Band" from Another Roadside Attraction by Tom Robbins. [4]
GPGDS' electric mix of roots, reggae, and dub music that combines world beats and reggae rhythm with jam band aesthetics. They are committed to "connecting people with the great music; roots and dub for your mediation." The band have been noted for their live shows, which are often recorded by concert tapers and posted on Etree and the Internet Archive.
In 2006, GPGDS solidified their sound by adding local Rochester guitarist Dylan Savage, Aaron Lipp on vocals/percussion/keys and Rachel Orke on keyboard.
The band's debut album Slow Down [5] was released in 2006 and received regular airplay on Sirius and XM Radio. [6] The album was recorded at Pyramid Sound Studios in Ithaca, New York, and produced by the band and Alex Perialas. [7]
Soon after, they recorded a live acoustic session at Moboogie Loft in Denver, Colorado.
On May 30, 2008, the band played at Warren Haynes' Mountain Jam Festival at Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in upstate New York. [8]
In 2009, the band released a live recordings album titled, Live Up!. The album features 11 tracks that were recorded during their 2008 and 2009 national tours. [9]
Founding member Matt O'Brian and keyboard player Rachel Orke left the band in 2010. [10]
The band also released Live Up!! Volume II on September 2, 2010, featuring 10 live recordings from the band's Southeast USA tour. [11] They also played at the 2010 All Good Music Festival gaining further notoriety in the jam band circuit. [12]
In 2011, the band added guitarist Dan Keller from North Tonawanda, New York on lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals, and harmony. [13]
On July 23, 2011 the band played the Gathering of The Vibes music festival in Bridgeport, Connecticut. [14] They also returned to the All Good Music Festival for the second consecutive year. [15]
The band released their second studio album, Country on January 31, 2012, on the California-based record label Controlled Substance Sound Labs. [16] With this release, the quintet has charted new territory and put together a lyrically driven roots Americana-music and folk album.
On April 10, 2012, the band released their third studio album, (a full electric album), In These Times, also on the Controlled Substance Sound Labs label. [16] The 'psychedelic roots' sound is more familiar to fans who were familiar with the band through concerts and live recordings. The album peaked at #5 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart. [17]
The band's music was featured on NPR's radio program All Things Considered on January 28, 2012. [18] [19]
Keyboardist Tony Gallicchio, another Rochester local, joined the band in place of departing keyboard player Aaron Lipp.
In 2013, the band recorded their fourth album, Steady which was co-produced by Craig Welsch of 10 Foot Ganja Plant. [18] [20] Steady hit #1 on the Billboard Reggae Album chart on October 9, 2014. [17]
In 2015, the band released their fifth album (and second 'Americana' album), Bright Days on Easy Star Records. It features nine original songs recorded at the Rear Window Studio in Brookline, Massachusetts. [21]
On September 16, 2016, the band released their sixth album called, Make It Better on Rootfire Cooperative, featuring ten new tracks. The album was recorded in their hometown of Rochester, New York at Blackdog Studios owned by former band member Matt Goodwin. The band also prepared some tracks at Scanhope Sound in Littleton, Colorado. This album was mixed by Danny Kalb who also co-produced. [22] Make it Better debuted at the #1 spot on Billboard and the iTunes reggae charts. [23]
On April 7th, 2023, the band released their seventh album called, Love In Time on Easy Star Records, featuring eleven new tracks. [24]
The band released the singles, "Good Love", "Cool It", "Stop Fighting" in 2019. The same year, in February, guitarist Dan Keller played his last show with the band. GPGDS then added guitarist Eli Flynn from upstate New York band Upward Groove that spring. [25]
GPGDS then released dub versions of their previous songs in 2020, featuring Victor Rice, Pachyman, and Agent Jay.
In 2021, the band released more singles during the spring and summer titled, "Solidarity" with Kevin Kinsella (on April 2), "Really True (The Scientist Dub)", (on May 21) "Hold You Tonight" (on July 2) and "Narita" (on August 20). [26] They also continued touring in the U.S. in the summer and fall on the east coast.
The band has many different musical influences. Some of them include: Phish, Sublime, John Brown's Body, The Wailers, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, Lee Scratch Perry, Bob Marley, and The Grateful Dead. [4]
Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad has collaborated with many different artists on stage and in the studio. Their album Bright Days includes "Humboldt County Gold" featuring G. Love on harmonic. [27]
On the 2014 release Steady, the band collaborated with reggae legend Ranking Joe on the track "Take Your Place." [28]
Elliot Martin from John Brown's Body contributed vocals on the track "Really True" on the band's 2017 release Make It Better.
Italian-American musicologist Dougie "Roast Beef" Ducker, best known as "the man who brought Reggae to Biloxi", has covered several of the band's songs live, and dedicated a reggae-tinged cover of P.O.D's "Alive" to his so-called "Panda Bros". [29]

Dub is a musical style that grew out of reggae in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is commonly considered a subgenre of reggae, though it has developed to extend beyond that style. Generally, dub consists of remixes of existing recordings created by significantly manipulating the original, usually through the removal of vocal parts, emphasis of the rhythm section, the application of studio effects such as echo and reverb, and the occasional dubbing of vocal or instrumental snippets from the original version or other works.
The Long Beach Dub Allstars are an American dub/ska/reggae rock band formed in 1997 and disbanded in 2002, but reformed 10 years later.
Aswad are a British reggae group, noted for adding strong R&B and soul influences to the reggae sound. They have been performing since the mid-1970s, having released a total of 21 albums. Their UK hit singles include the number one "Don't Turn Around" (1988) and "Shine" (1994). "Aswad" is Arabic for "black". They are three-time Grammy Award nominees.
The Slackers are an American ska band, formed in Manhattan, New York in 1991. The band's sound is a mix of ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, soul, garage rock, and jazz. The Slackers' notability is credited to their prolific career, tours of North and South America, Europe, and elsewhere, and signing to notable punk label Hellcat Records.
The Time, also known as Morris Day and the Time and The Original 7ven, is an American funk rock band founded in Minneapolis in 1973. They contributed to the development of the Minneapolis sound, an eclectic fusion of funk, R&B, new wave, synth-pop and dance. Led by singer-songwriter Morris Day the band members are known for having been close associates of musician Prince, and are arguably the most successful artists who have worked with him, achieving success with singles such as "Get It Up", "The Bird", "Cool", "777-9311", "Jungle Love" and "Jerk Out".
Bim Skala Bim is a ska band formed in Boston that was influenced by the bands in England's two-tone movement as well as artists such as the Clash, UB40 and Bob Marley. Their "Boston Blue Beat" sound, a mix of upbeat two-tone ska, rock 'n' roll, and calypso with a noticeable reggae undertone, made them, along with The Toasters, some of the first bands in the third wave of ska in the 1980s. Shortly after, other bands became inspired, resulting in a lively scene in Boston and much of the United States.
SOJA is an American reggae band based in Arlington, Virginia. Formed in 1997, their music is currently produced under ATO Records. The eight-member band has released a number of singles, albums, and DVDs, including SOJA – Live in Hawaii. Their third full-length album Born in Babylon peaked at number 11 on the Top Heatseekers chart, while their 2012 album Strength to Survive topped the Billboard Reggae Album Chart. The band continues to tour and record new music.
Victor "Vic" Ruggiero, is a musician, songwriter and producer from New York City who has played in reggae, blues, ska and rocksteady bands since the early 1990s, including The Slackers, Stubborn All-Stars, SKAndalous All Stars, Crazy Baldhead and The Silencers. He has also performed with punk rock band Rancid, both live and in the studio. He has released four solo acoustic albums and continues to tour and record worldwide. Ruggiero is known primarily as a singer and organist, although he also plays piano, bass, banjo, cigar box guitar, guitar, harmonica and percussion.
New Monsoon is a rock jam band that is based in the San Francisco, California area that was founded in 1998 by Penn State classmates Bo Carper and Jeff Miller.
Colin Patrick Harper, better known by his stage name Collie Buddz, is a Bermudian reggae artist best known for his single "Come Around".
The Skatalites are a ska band from Jamaica. They played initially between 1963 and 1965, and recorded many of their best known songs in the period, including "Guns of Navarone." They also played on records by Prince Buster and backed many other Jamaican artists who recorded during that period, including Bob Marley & The Wailers, on their first single "Simmer Down." They reformed in 1983 and have played together ever since.
The Movement is an American reggae band originally formed in Columbia, South Carolina, in 2003. The two founding members, Josh Swain and Jordan Miller, then relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they acquired a live rhythm section in the form of local Philadelphia musicians Jay Schmidt and Gary Jackson. The band has released six studio albums. Their music is commonly described as a fusion of rock, reggae, hip hop and acoustic music.
The Skints are an English reggae punk band from London, described by Clash Music as "the torchbearers for modern British reggae music." The Skints mix reggae, ska, dub, punk rock, dancehall, soul, and rap, touring extensively across the UK, Europe and the United States. Their album Swimming Lessons (2019) debuted at number 1 on the Billboard reggae chart. Their original style of music has been described as "tropical punk".
New Kingston is a progressive reggae group whose members combine their Jamaican heritage with the urban sounds of their New York home, New Kingston are a family band consisting of brothers Tahir, Courtney Jr., and Stephen along with their father, Courtney Panton Sr. A first-generation Jamaican-American, Courtney the elder was active in New York's reggae scene before turning his sons on to the music of their island heritage. Born out of jam sessions in the family's Brooklyn basement, the brothers began their career playing Bob Marley and Earth, Wind & Fire covers at parties and gatherings around the neighborhood. By 2010, they'd become focused on their own writing, which fused R&B, hip-hop, and dancehall with traditional reggae sounds. With each brother writing and offering vocals, Courtney Sr. filled in on bass. Following their self-released debut, In the Streets, New Kingston went on a European tour with rising reggae star Collie Buddz, playing a number of prominent festivals. Their sophomore LP, 2013's Kingston University, earned them a deal with New York label Easy Star Records, which issued their third LP, Kingston City, in early 2015. Boasting an increased production value and guest spots by the Tribal Seeds, The Wailing Souls, Sister Carol, and Sugar Minott, Kingston City raised the band's visibility considerably, topping Billboard's reggae chart upon its release. An EP, Kingston Fyah, arrived in the summer of 2016.
Natty Nation is an American rock and reggae band from Madison, Wisconsin. Founded in 1995, as of April 20, 2017, the lineup included Demetrius "Jah Boogie" Wainwright, Aaron Konkol AKA Eyes of Moses, Anthony Paul Willis (drums), & Nick Czarnecki (guitar). The group has released several studio albums since their 1996 debut The Journey Has Just Begun..., in 2010 Isthmus (newspaper) named their 1998 release Earth Citizen one of the "top 25 Madison pop albums of all time," writing that "Natty Nation's mix of roots reggae and hard rock proved unique and gained a following that remains today," and their 2016 release, Divine Spark debuted at #3 on the Billboard (magazine) Reggae Chart.
Rootfire Cooperative is an American not-for-profit record label that was created in 2016, which specializes in zero interest micro loans for bands. It is a partnership between Rootfire and Ineffable Music Group. Artists maintain 100% ownership of their music. The microloan program is also supported by merchandise and music shows.
