Gigafactory Texas (also Tesla Gigafactory 5 or Giga Texas) is an automotive manufacturing facility near Austin, Texas built by Tesla, Inc. Construction began in July 2020, [1] limited production of Model Y began before the end of 2021, [2] [3] and initial deliveries of vehicles built at the factory took place at an opening party called “Cyber Rodeo” on April 7, 2022. [4]

The factory is also planned to be the main factory for the Tesla Cybertruck and the Tesla Semi, and will produce Model 3 and Model Y cars for the Eastern United States. [2] [5] [6] It also serves as the site of Tesla's corporate headquarters. [7] It is the country's second biggest factory by size as well as the second largest building in the world by volume. [8]

History

Tesla announced a manufacturing training program in cooperation with Austin Community College District on June 15, 2021. [9] [10] [11] The program was expected to start in August 2021 and the course was to last 14 weeks. [12]

Selection process

Tesla had been considering locations across eight states in the central United States during 2019‒2020. [13]

Community groups and government officials in several areas of the US expressed interest in hosting what was expected to be a very large Tesla Gigafactory manufacturing facility. [14] Some expressing interest in facilitating land procurement, getting over the regulatory obstacles, and considering potential tax incentives. [15] Some used social media marketing aiming to reach Elon Musk directly. [16] [17]

By May 2020, a selection process was underway by Tesla. The short list included Austin, Nashville (Tennessee) and Tulsa (Oklahoma). [18] [19] [20] Two locations in the vicinity of Tulsa had been viewed by Tesla by mid-May. [20] The Tulsa campaign was promoted by G. T. Bynum, the mayor of Tulsa. In May 2020 Bynum discussed the suitability of "Green Country" (Northeastern Oklahoma) [20] and distributed a photomontage of the Cybertruck in Tulsa Police Department livery, with a suggestion of local purchasing, if the Gigafactory were to be situated near Tulsa. [21] On May 20, 2020, wrap advertising was applied to the Golden Driller statue located at the Tulsa Expo Center to create a caricature of Elon Musk, with the word "Tulsa" on statue's belt buckle replaced by the "Tesla" name. In July 2020, Tesla selected Austin as the site. [24]

Austin

In 2014, Tesla evaluated a 1,500-acre (600 ha; 2 sq mi; 6 km2) manufacturing site on U.S. Route 79 at Frame Switch ( 30°32′N97°30′W / 30.54°N 97.5°W / 30.54; -97.5 (Hutto MegaSite, (Frame Switch, Texas)) ), located between the towns of Hutto and Taylor, north-east of the Greater Austin center as its next factory. [25] [26]

Tesla subsequently chose to construct Giga Nevada (formerly Gigafactory 1) in Nevada in 2014.

By June 2020, a different location near Austin was being considered. It is a 2,100-acre (850 ha; 3.3 sq mi; 8.5 km2) site ( 30°14′N97°36′W / 30.23°N 97.6°W / 30.23; -97.6 (Tesla Colorado River site, (Hornsby Bend, Texas)) ) bordering Harold Green Road ( now Tesla Rd) and Texas State Highway 130. [27] On June 16, 2020 the Commissioners' court of Travis County discussed a possible incentives package for Tesla. [28] [29] In July 2020, the Del Valle Independent School District approved a tax incentives package worth $68 million, should the Tesla Gigafactory be built. [27]

On July 22, 2020, during a 2Q2020 earnings call, Tesla announced that Del Valle, Austin, Texas had been selected for Gigafactory 5. [2]

By the end of July 2020, construction had begun. [1] The Tesla Gigafactory received state tax incentives worth about $50 million through the Texas Tax Code Chapter 313 program. [30]

The first fully completed Tesla Model Y rolled off the line at Giga Texas in the last week of August 2021 under trial production. [31]

In December 2021, Elon Musk estimated that Giga Texas will require a total investment of at least $10B and may employ as much as 20,000 employees within the company. [32] Observers have spotted production cars in and outside of the factory. [33]

As of March 2022, Tesla battery manufacturers CATL and Panasonic are scouting sites for battery factories in the US, including Kansas and Oklahoma (which are within close proximity of Giga Texas), Mexico and Canada. [34] [35] Each factory on its own may involve a multi-billion dollar investment.

During the night of January 18/19, 2021, concrete foundations for three Giga Press high-press die-casting machines were poured at the north-east corner Giga Texas factory location. [36] [37]

On January 21, 2021 the first Giga Press components started to arrive on site in crates and shipping containers. [38] [39] On January 22, 2021 the base frame of the first Giga Press was unboxed and craned into position. [40]

The campus is located 35 kilometres (20 mi) south-east of central Berlin and some 8 kilometres (5 mi) southeast of the Berlin state boundary at Erkner/Rahnsdorf. Giga New York Photovoltaic (PV) cell factory in Buffalo, New York

Tesla Giga New York is a photovoltaic (PV) cell factory leased by Tesla subsidiary SolarCity in Riverbend, Buffalo, New York. The factory, owned by the State of New York, was built on brownfield land remediated from a former steel mill. Construction of the factory, rebranded as RiverBend, started in 2014 and was completed in 2016–17.

Tesla Giga Shanghai is a factory in Shanghai, China operated by Tesla, Inc. The facility currently hosts the final assembly of the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, with Model Y deliveries slated to begin in January 2021. The factory's initial production rate target is 3,000 cars a week, eventually ramping up to 250,000 electric cars per year. The first assembled Model 3s were delivered in December 2019, just twelve months after Tesla began site grading on the Gigafactory in December 2018.

Tesla Cyberquad Electric quad bike all-terrain vehicle

The Tesla Cyberquad is an electric quad bike all-terrain vehicle (ATV) concept presented by Tesla, Inc at the Tesla Cybertruck's November 2019 unveiling. Concluding the presentation at the company's Design Studio in Hawthorne, Elon Musk announced 'one more thing', at which point the ATV was shown being loaded onto the back of the Cybertruck. Observers have pointed to elements seen at the unveiling indicating that the Cyberquad prototype had been built by swapping the powerplant and plastics on a Yamaha Raptor. Certain images from the rear suggest the vehicle also appears to have the powertrain borrowed from Zero Motorcycles.

Giga Press are a series of aluminium die casting machines manufactured by Idra Group in Italy. They are notable for being the largest high-pressure die casting machines in the world, with a clamping force of 55,000 to 61,000 kilonewtons. Each machine weighs 410–430 tonnes (900,000–950,000 lb).

Criticism of Tesla, Inc. Systemic criticism of Tesla, Inc. and its products

Tesla, Inc. has been criticized for its cars, workplace culture, business practices, and occupational safety. Many of the company's criticisms are also directed toward Elon Musk, its angel investor, CEO, and Product Architect. Critics have also accused the company of deceptive marketing, promises, and fraud. Some critics have highlighted Tesla's downplay of issues, and a few have been retaliated by the company for whistleblowing.

Tesla Bot, also known as Optimus, is a conceptual general-purpose robotic humanoid under development by Tesla, Inc. It was announced at the company's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day event on August 19, 2021. CEO Elon Musk claimed during the event that Tesla would likely build a prototype by 2022. Musk is on record having said that he thinks Optimus "has the potential to be more significant than the vehicle business over time."
