Give the People What They Want received positive reception from music critics. At the review aggregator website Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score based on independent reviews, the album scored an 80/100 based on 31 selected ratings, indicating "generally favorable" reviews. [2] At The A.V. Club , Annie Zaleski graded the album a B+, noting that the album is not a "rehash of the past—or a collection that panders." [4] Will Hermes writing for Rolling Stone rated the album three-and-a-half stars, stating that the band is "extending and preserving tradition; it remains a national treasure and an instant soul party." [9] At Spin , Anupa Mistry rated it a seven out of ten, affirming that "The point is that music from another time can still thrill us in this one because of its practically tyrannical insistence on bliss." [11] Ben Cardow of NME rated it a seven out of ten, commenting that "Rarely has reliability been this funky". [7] At Slant, Kyle Fowle rated it three-and-a-half stars, writing that the music here is "reveling in a variety of musical tones, from confident, strutting anthems of independence to slow-burning, intimate ballads, but also displays Jones at her most vocally ferocious, lending a self-assured voice to the down and out." At Allmusic, Fred Thomas rated it four stars, noting how "These ten songs sound almost designed to be played on repeat, and keep with the always colorful and ecstatically fun sound audiences have come to expect from one of the best acts going in retrofitted classic soul." [3] Elysa Gardner of USA Today rated it three-and-a-half out of four, commenting that "her mighty voice and spirit undiminished" on which is "matched by the Dap-Kings' old-school R&B dynamism, and by the gritty, groovy indomitability conveyed in their new songs." [12] At The Independent , Andy Gill rated it four stars, affirming that this release is "as good an R&B album as any in recent years." [6] Maddy Costa writing for The Guardian rated it four stars, alluding to how the release "breathes passionate new life into the past." [5] However, PopMatters Zachary Houle rated it a six out of ten, cautioning that the album "is a quasi-holding pattern and is middling in its success". [8]

Agent Provocateur is the fifth studio album by the British-American rock band Foreigner, released on December 14, 1984. The album was the band's first and only number one album in the United Kingdom, and it reached the top 5 in the United States. Although album sales were lower than their previous work in the US, it contains the band's biggest hit single, "I Want to Know What Love Is", which is their only #1 single in the UK and the US, staying at the top spot for three and two weeks, respectively. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings were an American funk and soul band signed to Daptone Records. They were part of a revival movement of mid-1960s to mid-1970s style funk and soul music. They released their debut album Dap Dippin' in 2002, the first of seven studio albums. Their 2014 album Give the People What They Want was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Following Sharon Jones' death in 2016, the band released the posthumous album Soul of a Woman in 2017 and a compilation of cover songs in 2020.

Homer Steinweiss is an American drummer, songwriter, and producer known as a prominent drummer in the New York soul revival scene. He is a founding member and drummer of groups including Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Lee Fields & The Expressions, El Michels Affair, and Dan Auerbach's The Arcs, among many others. He leads the Brooklyn folk soul band Holy Hive with Paul Spring. A popular session musician as part of The Dap-Kings and in his own right, he is perhaps best known for his work with Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse, with whom he recorded the 2006 album Back to Black.
Franklin Stribling, professionally known as Binky Griptite, is an American guitarist, record producer, and radio DJ. He is best known as a founding member and guitarist of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Soul Providers, and Antibalas, among other Daptone Records-related projects. From 2017 to 2021, he hosted the weekly radio program The Boogie Down on WFUV.
