Gauhati University also known as GU, is a collegiate public state university located in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was established on 26 January 1948 under the provisions of an Act enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly and is the oldest university in Northeast India. As of 2024, Gauhati University is esteemed as the 40th-ranked institution in India according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), securing its position within the top 100 educational institutions. Bilasipara College, Old name -"N.N College" Bilasipara in Dhubri district of Assam, was established in 1960 with the objective of imparting higher education to the young people of the rural and economically backward western Assam. It is the second oldest college in Dhubri district. It is now under Deficit Grant-in-Aid system of the government of Assam. At present 16 departments are operating with a staff strength of only 77. It is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by University Grants Commission under 2f and 12B. The NAAC accredited the college with a B grade in 2014.
Bagadhar Brahma Kishan College is located at Jalahghat in the newly formed district of Baksa under BTAD, Assam. It was founded following a public initiative in 1978 to provide higher education to the underprivileged boys and girls of the Jalah block, which is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Baksa district near the Bhutan border, and populated mostly by scheduled tribes and other native communities. It was originally called Kishan College. In 1982, it was renamed to Bagadhar Brahma Kishan College after its benefactor who is an uneducated tribal social worker. Jalah is a low literacy neighborhood, especially in female literacy.
Goalpara region, largely congruous to the historical undivided Goalpara district, is a region that is associated with the people and culture of Goalpara. Pub Kamrup College, established in 1972, is a general degree college situated at Baihata Chariali in Kamrup district, Assam. This college is affiliated with the Gauhati University. The college fraternity as well as the locality at large is thankful to the concern doyens for their able guidance and leadership in the act of initiation of the college. Nowgong College is an autonomous college affiliated to Gauhati University. Established in 1944, it is one of the oldest co-educational colleges of Assam, situated in the city of Nagaon. It was initially established with the permission of the University of Calcutta but later, in 1948, the college was accorded affiliation to the Gauhati University. On 22 December 2020, the college was granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission for a period of 10 years. It was Upgraded into University in 2023.
B. Borooah College (Autonomous), established in 1943, is a degree college situated in Ulubari locality of Guwahati, Assam. It was named after Bholanath Borooah a businessman from Nagaon. This college is affiliated with the Gauhati University.
Bahona College, established in 1966, is a general degree college situated at Bahona, in Jorhat district, Assam. Ram Kumar Baruah was the founder principal of the college. This college is affiliated with the Dibrugarh University. It offers higher secondary and undergraduate courses in both arts and science.
Chatia College is an institution for higher education located in Sootea in Naduar area under Biswanath district of Assam, India. The college was established in 1982.
