Handique Girls College is a constituent college of the University of Gauhati. [1] It is one of the oldest colleges located in the Indian state of Assam and offers undergraduate courses in Arts and Science.
The college has its roots initially as Panbazar Girls' High school. Subsequently, the Handique Girls College was established in 1939 as the Guwahati Girls College. Mrs Rajabala Das was the founder principal of the college. The college was initially located in the Panbazar area of the city. With the shifting to the present site in 1940, the college was renamed Handique Girls College (in honour of noted philanthropist R. K. Handique), and became affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The college later become affiliated to the University of Gauhati following its establishment in 1948. [2]

The college is situated on the western bank of the Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati. [2] The present campus is spread over two acre of land. The Government of Assam has allocated an additional four acre of land for future expansion. [2]
The Nirmal Prova Bordoloi Hostel is situated just opposite to the college campus on the eastern side of the Dighalipukhuri. [3] It is a three storied building with additional residential complex for Hostel Super and other staff members. [3]
The college has eighteen departments offering major and general courses. [4] The college offers courses of study in both Arts and Science faculties up to Degree Major level. [5] The medium of instruction is English. However, Assamese is also used as complementary to English. Conforming to the national pattern of education, 10+2+3 structure is followed in the state of Assam and the Three Year Degree Course (TDC) has been introduced from the 1984-85 session. [5]

The Handique Girls College Students Union is the general body of the students of the college. Its membership is compulsory for every student admitted into the college. The office bearers of the Union are elected annually through direct ballot. The Students' Union organizes various activities mainly Games and Sports, Debate, Cultural items and Social Service among the students. It also brings out a magazine annually as a medium for developing the potentialities of students. [10]
Gauhati University also known as GU, is a collegiate public state university located in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was established on 26 January 1948 under the provisions of an Act enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly and is the oldest university in Northeast India. As of 2024, Gauhati University is esteemed as the 40th-ranked institution in India according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), securing its position within the top 100 educational institutions. It is accredited with a grade of 'A+' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in its 4th cycle of accreditation on 5 July 2024.
Krishna Kanta Handique was a Sanskrit scholar, an Indologist and philanthropist from Assam. He was a recipient of the civilian honour of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Cotton University is a public state university located in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was established in 2017 by the provisions of an Act from the Assam Legislative Assembly which merged Cotton College State University and Cotton College. The university has progressed to become one of the top 200 institutions of the country. However, as of 2024, Cotton University is ranked 373rd in the NIRF, whereas Gauhati University holds a commendable 40th position in the same ranking.
Queer Pride Guwahati was organised for the first time by the members and supporters of the local LGBT community in Guwahati, Assam on 9 February 2014. The Queer Pride Guwahati was the first LGBT Pride in the entire North Eastern India. The Pride is now an annual event.
Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Tezpur (GIMT-Tezpur) is a private institute offering degree level technical courses in the State of Assam is a Private college established by Shrimanta Shankar Academy (SSA) Society and Government of Assam, India. The college was established with permission from the state government and approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and is affiliated to Gauhati University (GU), Guwahati, Assam and also to Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU), Guwahati, Assam.
Dakshin Kamrup College is an educational institution for higher education affiliated with Gauhati University. The college is located in Mirza in the Kamrup District of Assam. At present the college has Arts, Commerce and Science streams with seventeen departments offering Major courses.
Apurba Sarma is a National Award-winning film critic and a Sahitya Akademi winning author from Halem, Sonitpur district, Assam. He is one of the brothers of Arun Sarma who is also a Sahitya Academy Award winning author. He did his master's in economics at Gauhati University (1965). And later worked as a staff reporter at The Assam Tribune (1965–1967), as lecturer in economics at Nowgong Girls College (1967–1997), as principal, Nowgong Girls College (1997–2002), and as editor of Ajir Asom, an Assamese daily published by The Sentinel (Guwahati). He is presently the founder-president of Xahitya Mancha Asom, a Guwahati-based society of writers and fans of Assamese literature.
Pragjyotish College, established in 1954, is one of the oldest, coeducational, postgraduate colleges situated in Guwahati, Assam. This college is affiliated with the Gauhati University.
Nowgong College is an autonomous college affiliated to Gauhati University. Established in 1944, it is one of the oldest co-educational colleges of Assam, situated in the city of Nagaon. It was initially established with the permission of the University of Calcutta but later, in 1948, the college was accorded affiliation to the Gauhati University. On 22 December 2020, the college was granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission for a period of 10 years. It was Upgraded into University in 2023.
B. Borooah College (Autonomous), established in 1943, is a degree college situated in Ulubari locality of Guwahati, Assam. It was named after Bholanath Borooah a businessman from Nagaon. This college is affiliated with the Gauhati University.
Suchibrata Roychoudhury was an Assamese litterateur and poet, and the first female Judicial Magistrate of Assam as an Assam Civil Services officer. She received the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize in 2001 for translating Suvira Jaiswal's The Origin and Development of Vaishnavism in India.
Shakuntala Choudhary, also known as Shakunthala Baideo, was an Indian social worker. Born in Assam, British Raj, she was known for her commitment and devotion to the popularization of the Gandhian way of life.
Ellora Vigyan Mancha is a non- profitmaking, non-governmental organization established in May 2004 in Assam, India, to Spread scientific temper and to fight superstition and blind belief, launch campaigns and movement for health awareness, climate change, encourage blood donation/ eye donation/ other human organ(s) donation/ whole body donation after death for transfusion, transplantation or medical research., and to Instill a sense of fraternity in people through selfless humanitarian service.
Sudakshina Sarma was an Indian Assamese language singer and musician. In a career spanning over seven decades, Sarma recorded songs in a variety of genres across Assamese music spanning both classical and modern including Borgeet, Kamrupi Lokgeet, and Goalpariya Lokogeet. She also popularized Jyoti Sangeet, songs written by Assamese writer and lyricist Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and also Rabindra Sangeet.
