Hisory of the college

The journey of the birth and growth of Pandu College is intrinsically associated with the expansion of NF Railway, India. Formation of NF Railway Head Quarters at Maligaon and the subsequent colonies along with the steady rise of inhabitants in the vast Pandu-Maligaon area naturally required a well functioning educational ecosystem. As western Guwahati didn’t have any institution of higher education at the time an attempt was made in 1960 to fill up this lacuna. The ground work started in the middle of 1961, but concerns over space and fund loomed large. Fortunately at the initial stage, the N.F. Railway accorded permission to start classes in the vacated Netaji Vidyapeeth premises and also approved 99-year lease of 3.95 acres of railway land to set up the college. The institution was sustained by people’s contribution from various quarters in the early years. Many of the railway employees donated a portion of their salary every month from 1962-1966. Sri Satya Kinkar Sen was the founder Principal of the college. It was only befitting that September 5, observed all over the country as Teachers’ day, was chosen to be the birth day of the newly set up college. A solemn inaugural function was held on 05-09-1962 at the Railway Recreation Club, Pandu, in which Sri Radhika Ram Das, Minister of State for Revenue was the Chief Guest. The first admission notice to the Pre-University and Degree classes (night-shift) in the Arts and Commerce in the college was served on 30.11.1963. Within two years i.e. by 1965, the Science and Arts streams had become functional for both day and night shifts. Such was the dedication of the teachers that within a short span of time, Pandu College retained the distinction of being one of the most preferred institutions of higher education and learning. The honours courses were introduced phase-wise from 1967–68 and the college, in the meantime, was affiliated to Gauhati University.
