The Pan American Games is a continental multi-sport event in the Americas featuring summer sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The competition is held among athletes from nations of the Americas, every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games. It's the oldest continental games in the world. The only Winter Pan American Games were held in 1990. In 2021, the Junior Pan American Games was held for the first time specifically for young athletes. The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) is the governing body of the Pan American Games movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.

The 1999 Pan American Games, officially the XIII Pan American Games or the 13th Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event that was held from July 23 to August 8, 1999, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and surrounding towns and cities. Canoeing competitions started the day before the games officially begun. Approximately 5,000 athletes from 42 nations participated at the games. A total of 330 medal events in 34 sports and 42 disciplines.
The athletics competition at the 2007 Pan American Games was held at the Flamengo Park and Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio de Janeiro between 22 July and 29 July 2007. In the 47 events that took place, thirteen Games records in athletics were equalled or beaten at the 2007 edition.
Antigua and Barbuda has competed at every edition of the Pan American Games since the eighth edition of the multi-sport event in 1979. However, Antigua and Barbuda participated in the 1959 Pan American Games as part of the British West Indies and future Prime Minister Lester Bird won a bronze medal in the long jump. Sprinter Heather Samuel won Antigua and Barbuda's first Pan Am medal in 1995, a bronze in the women's 100 metres. Sprinter, Brendan Christian won Antigua and Barbuda's first gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. To date, all five of Antigua and Barbuda's medals have been won in the sport of track and field. Antigua and Barbuda did not compete at the first and only Pan American Winter Games in 1990.
The 2019 Pan American Games, officially the XVIII Pan American Games and commonly known as the Lima 2019 Pan-Am Games or Lima 2019, were a multi-sport event governed by the Panam Sports Organization, were held in Lima, Peru from July 26 to August 11, 2019, with preliminary rounds in certain events having begun on July 24, 2019. These were the first Pan American Games to be held in Peru, and the seventh to be held in South America.
Saint Lucia has competed at every edition of the Pan American Games since the twelfth edition of the multi-sport event in 1995. Track and field athlete Dominic Johnson won the country's first Pan Am medal in 2003, a bronze in the men's pole vault. To date, all three of Saint Lucia's medals have been won in the sport of track and field. As of the last Pan American Games in 2015, Saint Lucia is twenty-ninth on the all time medals list. Saint Lucia did not compete at the first and only Pan American Winter Games in 1990.

Notable as a relative latecomer to the sport after commencing training at age 23, Mitchell is the 2020 Olympic champion, 2021 World bronze medallist, and 2019 Pan American Games champion in the individual sprint, as well as a five-time Pan American Track Cycling Championships gold medalist.
