Anderson Peters MBE (born 21 October 1997) is a Grenadian javelin thrower [4] and the 2019 and 2022 world champion in the event. In 2024, he won the bronze medal in the men's javelin throw at the Paris Olympic Games. [5] He is a multiple time CARIFTA Games champion at the discipline and in 2016 earned a bronze medal at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, setting a new Grenadian national record and OECS record at the same time.

Career

He gave the performance of the championships at the 2016 CARIFTA Games, a meet record of 78.28 m (256 ft 9 in), and was awarded the Austin Sealy Trophy. [6] In January 2017 it was announced that Anderson was given a full scholarship to Mississippi State University. [7] He started his season with a throw of 75.29m at the 2017 Bulldog Relays. [8]

At the 2017 edition of the Whitsuntide games at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium, Anderson improved his personal best distance in the Javelin Throw three times. With his final throw we achieved a distance of 81.23 Meters. [9] On 25 June 2017, he was able to further improve on his personal best and National Record with a throw of 83.36m at the Trinidad and Tobago NGC/SAGICOR/NAAA National Open Championships. This throw allowed him to achieve the qualifying standard for the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. At the 3rd OECS Track And Field Championships held at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium, Anderson further lifted his personal best with a throw of 84.81m. Anderson went on to attend the 2017 World Championships in Athletics in London but was unable to advance beyond the qualifying round with a best effort of 78.99m.

On 23 March during his second outdoor competition of 2018 Anderson registered an 81.95m throw shattering Mississippi State's freshman record in the javelin by more than six meters. The throw moved him to the top of the NCAA leader board and a 4th place World Ranking. He was subsequently named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Men's National Athlete of the Week. [10] He also earned Freshman of the Week honors from the Southeastern Conference. [11] He went on to become the Southeastern Conference champion in his event with a throw of 82.04m, a new meet record. On 29 May he was named the SEC Field freshman of the year. [12] After winning the Javelin competition NCAA championship with a new record of 82.82 he was given "All American" honors [13]

In August 2019, Peters won gold at the Pan American Games in the process setting a games record and national record. Peters also won Grenada's first ever Pan American Games gold medal. [14]

At the World Athletics Championships 2022, Peters successfully defended his world title, beating the Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra with three throws over 90 m. He won a silver medal for Grenada at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a throw of 88.64 m. [15]

On 13 August 2022, Anderson got severely injured after being beaten by five crew members of a party boat. [16] [17]

Peters was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to sports. [18]

Still recovering from his injury, he failed to make it into the final round of World Athletics Championships 2023 with a throw of 78.49 m in the qualification round. [19]

Following his medal-winning performance at the Paris Olympic Games, Anderson delivered a remarkable 90m throw at the Diamond League meet in Lausanne on August 23, 2024, securing the top position ahead of Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra. Anderson's throw of 90.61m also set a new meet record. [20]

Uwe Hohn is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He is the only athlete to throw a javelin 100 metres or more, with his world record of 104.80 m. A new javelin design was implemented in 1986 and the records had to be restarted, thus Hohn's mark became an "eternal world record". After his retirement from competition, Hohn became a coach and since 1999 he has worked for SC Potsdam, the successor of ASK Vorwärts Potsdam, where he started his career as a sportsman. He coached Indian track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra, who won the gold in the men's javelin throw at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo.

The CARIFTA Games is an annual athletics competition founded by the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA). The games were first held in 1972 and consist of track and field events including sprint races, hurdles, middle distance track events, jumping and throwing events, and relays. The Games has two age categories: under-17 and under-20. Only countries associated with CARIFTA may compete in the competition.

Jakub Vadlejch is a Czech track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. He is a four-time Olympian for the Czech Republic, having competed in 2012, 2016,2020 and 2024 winning a silver medal in 2020. He also has represented his country six times at the World Championships in Athletics, winning the bronze medal in 2022 and 2023 and silver medal in 2017, and six times a competitor at the European Athletics Championships, winning the silver medal in 2022 and the gold medal in 2024. He also won the 2016 Diamond League title, 2017 Diamond League title, and the 2023 Diamond League Title.

Johannes Vetter is a German athlete who competes in the javelin throw. He won gold at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. His personal best of 97.76 m is the German record, and ranks him second on the overall list behind Jan Železný. Vetter currently trains under Boris Obergföll and is a member of LG Offenburg's track and field squad. He was previously with SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken and Dresdner SC.

Subedar Major Neeraj Chopra is an Indian track and field athlete. Considered as the greatest Indian javelin thrower, he's a double medalist at the Olympics, World Championships, and the Asian Games. He has won the Diamond League once. Chopra won the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics, becoming the first Asian javelin throw athlete to do so. He became the first Asian to win a gold in javelin at the World Championships after his win in 2023. Chopra has won gold medals in every major tournament. He has a podium finish streak in 24 consecutive competitions, dating back to 2020. Since his performance at the 2016 World U20 Championship, he continues to hold the junior javelin throw world record.

Candesha Scott is a Grenadian javelin thrower. She became the National Record holder at the discipline at the 2016 Carifta Games with a throw of 51.13m. She Qualified to compete at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland where she failed to qualify for the final of women's javelin. Scott finished 13th overall recording her best throw on the second attempt of her allotted three, throwing 47.86 meters. She has since gained admission into the Central Arizona College.

Meleni Rodney, OLY is a Grenadian sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres.

Vipin Kasana is an Indian athlete who competes in the Javelin throw. He participated in the 2014 Commonwealth Games which took place in Glasgow, Scotland. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games he finished fifth.

Arshad Nadeem is a Pakistani javelin thrower. He is the reigning Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion. He is also the current silver medalist in the World Athletics Championship. He set an Olympic and Asian record with a throw of 92.97 metres (305.0 ft) at the 2024 Summer Olympics. His throw was also the sixth longest throw in the history of javelin throw, when considering only the best throw from each athlete.

The men's javelin throw event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 4 and 7 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. Approximately 35 athletes competed; the exact number depended on how many nations use universality places to enter athletes in addition to the 32 qualifying through distance or ranking.

The men's javelin throw competition of the athletics events at the 2019 Pan American Games took place on the 10 of August at the 2019 Pan American Games Athletics Stadium. The defending Pan American Games champion is Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">India at the World Athletics Championships</span> Sporting event delegation

India has participated in the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. Their first ever medal was a Bronze medal won by Anju Bobby George in 2003 in Paris; in the Women's long jump discipline.

The men's javelin throw at the 2023 World Athletics Championships was held at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest on 25 and 27 August 2023.

The men's javelin throw at the 2024 Summer Olympics was held in Paris, France, on 6 and 8 August 2024. This is the 27th time that the event was contested at the Summer Olympics since its introduction in 1908.
