Howick is a local government area in the eastern urban area of Auckland in New Zealand's Auckland Region, governed by the Howick Local Board and Auckland Council. It currently aligns with the council's Howick Ward. [1]

Howick is the fifth largest local government area in New Zealand, after Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton and Tauranga. [1]

Geography

The area includes the large communities of Pakuranga and Howick, the newer suburbs of Botany and Flat Bush, and the area of East Tāmaki. [1]

The swimming beaches of Cockle Bay, Waipaparoa / Howick Beach and Mellons Bay are located in this local government area. Other features include Howick Village, Mangemangeroa Reserve, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Te Tuhi, Botany Town Centre, Ormiston Road Bridge, Barry Curtis Park and Highbrook Business Park as well as Eastern Busway and Ormiston Town Centre. The area was traditionally settled by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, and in 1847 Howick was established as a defensive settlement for Auckland, by veteran fencible soldiers of the British Army. Howick was a small agricultural centre until the 1950s, when it developed into a suburban area of Auckland. Modern Howick draws much of its character from the succeeding waves of Asian settlement that it has experienced since New Zealand's immigration reforms of the 1980s, with a strong Chinese New Zealander presence in the suburb's business and education sectors.

Its most common attraction is a popular white-sand palm fringed beach, also called Eastern Beach, with summer temperatures attracting thousands of people from neighbouring suburbs to the beach to enjoy the shallow waters, and shops and parks within close vicinity. At the southern end of the beach is a boat ramp giving high-medium tide access to the dedicated water skiing zone adjacent to the beach. This was a popular area for gathering Pipi and Cockles, but overuse has seen a rāhui or ban placed on the beach. It is part of the Bucklands Beach peninsula.

The Howick Hornets are a rugby league club based in Howick, New Zealand. The premier team competes in Auckland Rugby League's senior competitions. The club currently competes in the top division, the Fox Memorial Trophy. The club has a historic rivalry with neighbours, the Pakuranga Jaguars, yet both clubs support each other and join forces annually, to ensure local juniors always have a team to play in. The Howick Hornets are former Fox Memorial champions, winning the historic shield twice so far since they announced themselves in 1st division in 2010. Consistently a top four 1st division club for over a decade now, has naturally seen new great rivalries emerge with clubs such as Point Chevalier, Bay Roskil Vikings, Otahuhu Leopards, and most notably the Mt Albert Lions - who Howick Hornets defeated in the dying seconds of 2019's heart stopping grand final at Mt Smart stadium.
