Ian Ray (born 28 August 1957) is a British former marathon runner who won the 1981 Berlin Marathon.
Ray is from Salisbury, England. [1] In 1979, Ray won the Southern Counties marathon championship in Harlow, [2] [3] in a time of 2:16:04. [1] Ray won the 1981 Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:15:41. [4] [5] [6] The top three in the race were all British, as were five of the top 10 finishers. [6] The race was the first to be held in central West Berlin, and the finish line was in Kurfürstendamm near to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. [4] [5] It was also the first Berlin Marathon with a cash prize for the winner. Ray was awarded 1000DM. [4]
Ray was selected to represent England in the marathon event at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia, after performing well at the AAA Championships. [7] Ray came eighth in the race, [8] [9] in a time of 2:15:11. [8] He was the second Englishman to finish, behind Mike Gratton. [9] Ray also competed at the 1983 London Marathon. [10]
The Edinburgh Marathon is an annual marathon event, governed by Scottish Athletics and run in Scotland over the traditional distance of 42.195 kilometres (26.219 mi). The first marathon event in Edinburgh was in 1982. Further marathons were held in Edinburgh in 1986 and 1999. Since 2003 the Edinburgh Marathon Festival has been held each year, usually in May. The current route begins in the city centre, moves out of Edinburgh into East Lothian, finishing at Musselburgh, East Lothian.
The women's marathon was one of the road events at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki, Finland. It took place on 7 August 1983, starting and finishing at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. The race was won by Norway's Grete Waitz in 2:28:09, ahead of Marianne Dickerson of the United States in second and the Soviet Union's Raisa Smekhnova in third.
John Duncan "Jock" Semple was a Scottish-American runner, physical therapist, trainer, and sports official. In 1967, he attained worldwide notoriety as a race official for the Boston Marathon, when he physically assaulted and attempted to tear off the bib number from 20 year old marathon runner Kathrine Switzer. Switzer was officially entered in the race in accordance with the Boston Marathon's rule book which at that time made no mention of gender, despite Semple saying that amateur rules banned women racing for more than a mile and a half. He subsequently oversaw implementation of qualifying times in 1970 and, in response to lobbying and rule changes by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the implementation of a separate women's race in 1972.
Martin Willock is a Canadian former cyclist. He competed in the team time trial event at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Derick "Ringo" Adamson" is a Jamaican former marathon runner. He competed at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, the 1990 Commonwealth Games, and also won the 1984 and 1985 Philadelphia Marathons.
The 2019 Berlin Marathon was a marathon race held on 29 September 2019 in Berlin, Germany. It was the 46th edition of the annual Berlin Marathon. The marathon distance is just over 26 miles (42 km) in length and the course is run around the city and starts and finishes in the Tiergarten. The elite men's race was won by Kenenisa Bekele in 2:01:41, two seconds slower than the world record set by Eliud Kipchoge in 2018. The elite women's race was won by Ashete Bekere following a sprint finish in 2:20:14. The wheelchair men's and women's races were won by Marcel Hug and Manuela Schär in 1:28:09 and 1:38:07, respectively.

Lynae Larson is an American former marathon runner, who won the 1978 Chicago Marathon, and came second at the 1979 Chicago Marathon. She failed to qualify for the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Elaine Van Blunk is an American long-distance runner who finished third at the 1994 Chicago Marathon. She was the 1989 winner of the 3000 meters at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships, and finished seventh in the 10,000 meters event at the 1991 Pan American Games.
Emily Chepar Kimuria is a Kenyan long-distance runner, who came second at the 2003 Berlin Marathon. She won the 2004 Hamburg Marathon and the 2005 Venice Marathon.
John Skovbjerg is a Danish marathon runner, who won the 1984 Berlin Marathon, and came second at the 1985 and 1986 Vienna City Marathons.
Bernard Willock is a Canadian businessman and former cyclist. Willock has worked as the President and CEO of Food for the Hungry Canada. As a cyclist, Willock won the 1980 Canadian National Road Race Championships, and was part of the Canadian team that came third in the team time trial event at the 1979 Pan American Games. He was scheduled to compete at the 1980 Summer Olympics, until Canada joined the boycott of the event, and competed at the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
