The 2013 Berlin Marathon was the 40th edition of the Berlin Marathon, held in Berlin, Germany. It took place on Sunday, 29 September. The race was sponsored by BMW, being officially titled the BMW Berlin Marathon. [1]
The men's race was won by Wilson Kipsang of Kenya in a world record time of 2:03:23. [2]
The women's race was won by Florence Kiplagat of Kenya in a time of 2:21:13. [3]
The 20th-place finisher in the men's race, Miguel Ángel Gamonal, tested positive for Clenbuterol and was disqualified and banned for two years. [4]
Although Kipsang's world record was the major historical event of the race, it later became notable for being Eliud Kipchoge's only loss at the marathon distance in an otherwise spotless competitive record spanning 2013 to 2019. His next loss did not occur until the 2020 London Marathon.

The New York City Marathon, currently branded as the TCS New York City Marathon for sponsorship reasons, is an annual marathon that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world, with 53,627 finishers in 2019 and 98,247 applicants for the 2017 race. Along with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, it is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors.
The World Marathon Majors (WMM) is a championship-style competition for marathon runners that started in 2006. A points-based competition founded on six major marathon races recognised as the most high-profile on the calendar, the series comprises annual races for the cities of Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. She was the world record holder for the women's half marathon with a time of 1:05:09 hours until it was broken by Peres Jepchirchir on 10 February 2017 at the RAK Half Marathon.
Patrick Makau Musyoki is a runner from Kenya. He is a former world record holder in the marathon—His time of 2:03:38, run at the 2011 Berlin Marathon, was the world record for two years, until it was beaten by Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich at the 2013 Berlin Marathon. He has run under 2 hours 4 minutes for the marathon on four occasions.

Stephen Kiprotich is a Ugandan long-distance runner. He is an Olympic marathon champion, having won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Kiprotich also won a gold at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. After Gezahegne Abera, he is the second person to follow an Olympic marathon title with a world championship gold medal for the same event.

An IAAF Gold Label Road Race, it was the third World Marathon Majors event to be held that year.
