Idris Ali (born 24 December 1956), known by his stage name Ilias Kanchan, [1] is a Bangladeshi actor and activist. He appeared in more than 350 films during the 1980s and 1990s. [2] He earned Bangladesh National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement (2021), Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Parineeta (1986) and Best Supporting Actor for Shasti (2005). [3] [4] He is a road safety activist in Bangladesh. [5] [6] He was awarded Ekushey Padak for his social service by the Government of Bangladesh in 2018. [7] He was the former President of Bangladesh Film Artists' Association, the organisation of local film artists. [8]

Early life

Kanchan was born in Ashutipara, Karimganj, Kishoreganj to Abdul Ali and Shorufa Khatun. He completed his higher secondary degree from Kabi Nazrul Government College in 1975. He graduated from the University of Dhaka from Department of Sociology.

Career

Kanchan debuted his acting career in 1977 through his performance in the film Boshundhora directed by Subhash Dutta. [9] In 2015, he acted in a children's film Ghuri, produced by Cinevision Bangladesh and written and directed by filmmaker Zafar Firoze. [10]

On 28 January 2022, Kanchan became the president of Bangladesh Film Artists' Association for 2022–24 term after getting 191 votes. His rival, Misha Sawdagor, got 148 votes. [8]

Personal life

Kanchan's first wife, Jahanara Kanchan, died in a road accident on 22 October 1993. [11] [12] [13] He himself has survived a road accident in 1989. [14] [15] He then established a social movement Nirapad Sarak Chai (We Demand Safe Road). In 2017, the Government of Bangladesh declared October 22 as the National Road Safety Day. [16] [1] Together they had a daughter, Israt Jahan Ima, and a son, Mirajul Moin Joy. Kanchan later married actress Parveen Sultana Diti which ended in divorce. [17]

Abu Taher Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, was a Bangladeshi film and television actor, director and screen-playwright. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh. He won Bangladesh National Film Awards five times for his roles in Dayee Ke? (1987), Madam Fuli (1999), Churiwala (2001), Mon Bosena Porar Table E (2009) and Chorabali (2012).

Anwar Parvez was a Bangladeshi music composer and music director. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2007 by the Government of Bangladesh. He composed about 2,000 songs and worked as a music director in about 200 feature films.

He won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Ghani (2011) and in 2022, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak for his contribution to acting by the government of Bangladesh.

Md. Khurshid Alam is a Bangladeshi playback singer. His notable songs include Chumki Choleche Eka Pothe, Bondi Pakhir Moto, Maa Go Maa, Miss Lanka, Ajke Na Hoi Bhalobasho, Dheere Dheere Chol Ghora, Chupi Chupi Bolo Keu Jeney Jabe and Jodi Bou Shajo Go. His career has spanned more than four decades, in which he sang over 300 songs. He was conferred the Ekushey Padak from the Government of Bangladesh in 2018 and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th Channel i Music Awards (2017) for his contribution to Bangladeshi film music. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gaan e Gaan e Gunijon Shongbordhona, by Citibank NA in 2019.

S. M. Mohsin was a Bangladeshi stage and television actor. He became an honorary fellow of the Bangla Academy in 2018. In 2020, he was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to acting.

Liaquat Ali Lucky is a Bangladeshi actor, director, singer, composer and cultural organiser. He served as director general of Shilpakala Academy from April 2011 to August 2024. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in 2019. As of 2018, he has acted in 58 theatre plays and directed 82 plays.
