Fazlur Rahman Babu (born 22 August 1960) [1] is a Bangladeshi actor and singer. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor a record five times for his roles in Shonkhonaad (2004), Meyeti Ekhon Kothay Jabe (2017), Fagun Haway (2019), Bishwoshundori (2020) and Nonajoler Kabbo (2021). Early life

Babu was born on 22 August 1960 at Faridpur district in the then East Pakistan. [10] He completed his school and college life in Faridpur. His father was a service holder, thereby he had to roam one place to another around the country. Babu was interested in acting from his childhood. In Faridpur, he joined Boishakhi Natya Gosthi pursuing to build up a career in the media arena. [11] [12] [8]

Acting and banking

Babu started his acting career in 1978 when he joined the theatre group Baishakhi Natya Ghosthi in Faridpur. That same year, Babu acted for first time in a national drama festival. Meanwhile, he joined the Agrani Bank and, in 1983, transferred his banking job to Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, where he also joined Mamunur Rashid's Aranyak Natyadal theatre group and debuted his acting with a role in Saat Purusher Rin. [13] Some of his performances in this theatre group include Nankar Pala, Pathar and Moyur Shinghashan. [14] [15]

Babu started his television acting career in the soap opera Mrittu Khuda (1991), produced by Kazi Abu Zafar Siddique, on Bangladesh Television (BTV). However, it was his role of Poran Majhi television drama Itikatha (1991), written by Rashid, [16] [17] that secured him further roles in dramas such as Shundari and Danab. Babu also acted with Bengali film Daruchini Dip directed by Tauquir Ahmed while Humayun Ahmed was story, dialogue and scriptwriter. [18] [19] [20]

Babu has become popular for his humorous characters but his early career in stage dramas like Danab and Jay Jayanti was in serious roles. [21] [22]

Babu continued to work for television and theatre simultaneously until 2000 when he stopped theatre work as television took nearly twenty-five days per month. Babu made his theatrical film début with Abdullah al Mamun's Bihanga between 2000 and 2001. [23]

Singing

Babu emerged as a singer when he performed two songs in the film Monpura . After that he become known to everyone as playback singer. [24] He published his first solo music album Indubala in 2009 which was become popular in whole country. He also sang four songs on the mixed album Monchor in 2008. [25]

Criticism

Babu took a stand for the government during the repression of the dictatorship Awami League government on the students in the quota reform movement that took place in 2024. [26] During the movement, a group of pro-autocracy Awami artists, including Babu, were active against the movement in a WhatsApp group called 'Alo Ashbei' [27] led by actor Ferdous. After the non-cooperation movement, on September 3, 2024, some screenshots related to that WhatsApp group were spread on social media. [28] [29]

Daruchini Dwip stars Riaz, Fazlur Rahman Babu, the award-winning Zakia Bari Momo, Abul Hayat, Asaduzzaman Noor, Dolly Johur, Challenger, Rahmat Ali, Wahida Mollick Jolly and Abdullah al Mamun. The film marks the debut film of Momo, Emon, Bindu, and Munmun.

Oggatonama is a 2016 Bangladeshi drama film directed and written by Tauquir Ahmed. It was selected as the Bangladeshi entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. The film stars Fazlur Rahman Babu, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Mosharraf Karim, Nipun Akter, Shatabdi Wadud, and several others. Oggatonama was released on 19 August 2016 in Bangladesh by Impress Telefilm. It is about a Bangladeshi migrant who dies after illegally entering the United Arab Emirates with a fake passport. The Bangladesh police receive the wrong corpse.

<i>Haldaa</i> 2017 Bangladeshi film

Haldaa is a 2017 Bangladeshi film directed by Tauquir Ahmed, based on the story written by Azad Bulbul. The film's plot is based on the struggling life of the fishermen of Halda River located in Chittagong, the only natural fish breeding center in Asia. The film is narrated in local Chittagonian dialect, although the dialogues are simplified for the understanding of the general audience.

<i>August 1975</i> (film) Bangladeshi political drama film

August 1975 is 2021 Bangladeshi political drama film based on the immediate aftermath of assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The film is produced by Selim Khan whose production company operates as Shapla Media International Ltd. Afsaruddin Bhuiyan, Kazi Mizanur Rahman and Nasuir Uddin also join the film as executive producers. Selim Khan directed the movie alongside Shamim Ahamed Roni. Masuma Rahman Nabila, Tauquir Ahmed and Shahiduzzaman Selim have been cast in various leading roles. The film portrays history of the killing of Rahman on 15 August, till his burial on 16 August. Principal photography of this film begun on 10 July and ended on 29 July 2020. The film was released on Cinebaj on 15 August 2021, the National Mourning Day in Bangladesh.
