Tauquir Ahmed (born 5 March 1966) [1] [2] is a Bangladeshi architect and actor, turned director in both television and cinema. His films won many international and national awards including Bangladesh National Film Awards in the Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Story categories for the films Joyjatra (2004) and Oggatonama (2016). Education

Ahmed studied in Jhenidah Cadet College (JCC) for his SSC and HSC exam. In JCC he actively took part in inter-house drama competition. He then studied architecture in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He completed film diploma from New York Film Academy in 2002. He had training in theatre direction from Royal Court Theatre, London (British Council Scholarship, 1995) and acting (Stage) from ITI training, University of Theatre of Nations, 1989.

Career

Ahmed started his career as a lead-actor in romantic role in early 1980s. Many of his dramas broadcast on BTV at that time. [9] Ahmed came out as a film director by making Joyjatra , Rupkothar Golpo , and Daruchini Dip .

Personal life

Ahmed married actress Bipasha Hayat on 23 July 1999. [10] Together they have one son - Arib and one daughter - Arisha. [10] He is the son-in-law of Abul Hayat.

Controversy

Toukir and Bipasha Hayat have been sued by his sister Tanjin Haider for embezzling Tk 1.5 million in the name of build and run the 'Nakkhtrabari Resort and Convention Centre' on 25 bigha land at Rajendrapur, Gazipur. [11]

<i>Joyjatra</i> 2004 Bangladeshi film

Joyjatra is Bangladeshi film directed by Tauquir Ahmed and produced by Azam Faruk, featuring Mahfuz Ahmed, Bipasha Hayat, Azizul Hakim, Ahsan Habib Nasim, and others. The film is set in the period of the Bangladesh Liberation War.

The Bangladesh National Award for Best Film is one of the categories in the National Film Awards presented annually by the Department of Films and Publications, the organisation set up by Ministry of Information in Bangladesh. It is the highest award for films in Bangladesh. This award goes to the producers of the film and is the only category in a year. The award comprises a medal, a certificate, and a cash prize of ৳50,000.

<i>Oggatonama</i> 2016 film

Oggatonama is a 2016 Bangladeshi drama film directed and written by Tauquir Ahmed. It was selected as the Bangladeshi entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. The film stars Fazlur Rahman Babu, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Mosharraf Karim, Nipun Akter, Shatabdi Wadud, and several others. Oggatonama was released on 19 August 2016 in Bangladesh by Impress Telefilm. It is about a Bangladeshi migrant who dies after illegally entering the United Arab Emirates with a fake passport. The Bangladesh police receive the wrong corpse.

The film's plot is based on the struggling life of the fishermen of Halda River located in Chittagong, the only natural fish breeding center in Asia. The film is narrated in local Chittagonian dialect, although the dialogues are simplified for the understanding of the general audience.
