The Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, commonly known as the Salt Lake Stadium, is an all-seater multi-purpose stadium located in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, with current capacity of 68,000 spectators. Named after Swami Vivekananda, the stadium is the home ground for multiple football clubs, most notably Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan. It was the fifth largest sports stadium in Asia by seating capacity. Prior to undergoing renovations in 2011, it had a seating capacity of 120,000. Prior to the construction and opening of Rungrado May Day Stadium in 1989, it was the largest football stadium in the world. The stadium hosted the final match of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, alongside other matches of the tournament. As part of security measures for the 2017 U-17 World Cup, the stadium was only open for 66,687 viewers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">IFA Shield</span> Association football competition in India

The IFA Shield is an annual football competition organized by the Indian Football Association, the football governing body in the Indian state of West Bengal. The IFA came into existence in 1893, and named after the association, the IFA Shield tournament was started in the same year. It is the third oldest football tournament in India, after Durand Cup and Trades Cup, and is among the oldest football competitions in the world.

Merdeka Tournament is an international friendly football tournament held in Malaysia to commemorate the Independence Day. It is mainly played at Independence Stadium, Kuala Lumpur. The competition bears the Malay word for independence. The Merdeka Tournament was once regarded as the 'Grand Old Lady of Asia' where top teams from football playing nations would love to be invited. As of 2023, the tournament has been held 42 times, and with decreasing frequency in recent decades. The Merdeka Tournament is the oldest invitational football tournament in Asia and the matches in the tournament are considered International "A" matches(Friendly match) by FIFA.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kazi Salahuddin</span> Bangladeshi footballer and manager

Kazi Md. Salahuddin is a Bangladeshi former football player currently serving as the president of South Asian Football Federation and Bangladesh Football Federation. He was a member of the Shadhin Bangla Football Team, which played across India to raise awareness about the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. He played for and captained the Bangladesh national team, retiring in 1983. Salahuddin is the first football player from the country to play abroad in the professional league in Hong Kong and is considered to be Bangladsh's first professional sports athlete.

Syed Nayeemuddin, known as Nayeem, is an Indian football coach and former player. He played for and captained the India national team. He later managed Mahindra United, Brothers Union, Dhaka Mohammedan, and Bangladesh national team.

Football is currently the second-most popular sport in Bangladesh, after cricket, and is governed by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). An interest in cricket resulting from the nation's success in Test cricket and participation in the Cricket World Cup overshadowed the past fame in the nation's football legacy. However, more football tournaments are being organized in and outside Dhaka than of any other sports, and football fever grips the nation during every FIFA World Cup as well as Copa America and UEFA European Championship. Mohammedan Sporting Club is an Indian football club based in Kolkata, West Bengal. Currently, the club competes in the I-League, the second-tier of the Indian football league system, as well as Calcutta Football League (CFL), the oldest football league in Asia. Formed in February 1891, it is one of the oldest active football clubs in the country.

Musa Ghazi was a Pakistani footballer who played as a left winger, and captained the Pakistan national football team during the 1960s.

Prasun Banerjee is an Indian former professional footballer and politician who is serving as an MP in the Lok Sabha from Howrah. He is an Arjuna Award winner (1979). Younger brother of the Pradip Kumar Banerjee, Prasun had also captained the India national football team in international tournaments.

The Aga Khan Gold Cup was a tournament played in Dhaka, Bangladesh which invited the top club sides from leading football playing nations of Asia to compete. Many renowned football pundits regard this competition as a predecessor of AFC Champions League, since it was the first organized international competition that involved club teams around Asia. From the late 1950s to the early 1980s, it was a prestigious tournament among Asian clubs.

Shahidur Rahman Chowdhury , known by his nickname Shantoo, is a former Bangladeshi football player and manager.

Hasanuzzaman Khan Bablu is a retired Bangladeshi football player and coach. At the club level, Bablu is most well known for representing Gopibagh-based Brothers Union. In Dhaka football, he has scored 75 goals including a hattrick. Bablu also represented the Bangladesh national team in the 1980 AFC Asian Cup and played for his country between 1975 and 1982. After retiring, he managed the national team as an interim in 2000, 2003 and 2006.

AKM Nowsheruzzaman, better known as Nowsher, was a Bangladeshi footballer who played as a striker or left-winger. After liberation, he was also part of the first ever Bangladesh national football team.

Sheikh Shaheb Ali was a former Bangladeshi football player and manager. He is the only East Pakistani to have both played for and managed the Pakistan national football team. He is also the first head coach of the Bangladesh national football team, guiding them at the 1973 Merdeka Cup. He holds the record of coaching Bangladesh to their first ever victory in international football.

Abdur Rahim was a was a Bangladeshi football manager and player. He represented the Pakistan national team during his playing career and was later head coach of the Bangladesh national team on a record seven different appointments, including for the country's maiden AFC Asian Cup appearance. In 1980 he received the National Sports Awards, for his contribution to Bangladeshi football.
