The Isle of Anglesey Council election, 2008 took place on Thursday 1 May 2008 to elect members of the Isle of Anglesey County Council in Wales. This was the same day as other United Kingdom local elections. The next full council election was on 2 May 2013.

The Isle of Anglesey County Council is the governing body for the county of Anglesey, one of the unitary authority areas of Wales. The council has 30 councillors who represent 11 multi-member electoral wards.

Election result

Forty county councillors were elected from forty electoral wards (by the 2013 election this had been reduced to 30 councillors and eleven electoral divisions). [1] Seven seats had no election because there were no opposing candidates (this was a reduction in comparison with 2004, when 14 seats were uncontested). [2]

A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. Wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area. It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered.

Following the election a group of Independent councillors, known as the Original Independents and led by Cllr Phil Fowlie, formed a coalition with Plaid Cymru to control the council. [4] Cllr Fowlie resigned from the council (and his Rhosneigr ward) in 2009 after the council continued to be embroiled in controversy. [5]

Plaid Cymru is a social-democratic political party in Wales advocating Welsh independence from the United Kingdom within the European Union.

Anglesey was the only Welsh authority voting in 2013, the election having been postponed from 2012 by the Welsh Government, in order to allow an electoral review to take place. The next full council election took place on 4 May 2017.

2017 Welsh local elections

Local elections were held in Wales on Thursday 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities, including the Isle of Anglesey, which was last up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. These local elections were held alongside local elections in Scotland and parts of England.

An election to Ceredigion County Council were held on 4 May 2017 as part of wider local elections across Wales. It was preceded by the 2012 election and the next election is scheduled to take place in 2022.
