It's Hard to Have Hope is the second studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 25 May 2018 by Holy Roar Records. The album was recorded in September 2017 at The Ranch Production House in Southampton with producer Lewis Johns. Primarily displaying a post-hardcore and post-metal sound, it expands on the heaviness and melodic tendencies of their debut album One Day All This Will End (2015). Its lyrics address various social and political topics including unpaid internships, revenge porn, feminism, abortion, animal welfare, sexual assault and long-term illness. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Adam Parrish.
It's Hard to Have Hope received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its messages and musical growth. The album was listed as one of 2018's best albums by Decibel , Kerrang! and Vice . Throughout 2018 and 2019, Svalbard supported its release with tours of the United Kingdom and Europe, as well as their first-ever tour of Japan.
Following the release of their debut album One Day All This Will End (2015), Svalbard went through a period of internal turmoil, marked by the departure of their bassist and the end of Serena Cherry and Liam Phelan's romantic relationship of seven years; both members would also go through their own long-term health struggles. [4] [5] As a result of this turmoil, Svalbard approached the writing of It's Hard to Have Hope as if it was going to be their final album, giving them the chance to be "creatively fearless" with their compositions and lyrics. [5] [6] The band worked together on its music first, with Cherry writing its lyrics later on. [7] They would regroup in September 2017 to record the album at The Ranch Production House in Southampton with producer Lewis Johns. [5] [8] It was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege Mastering in January 2018. [8]
It's Hard to Have Hope has been described as post-hardcore [6] [9] and post-metal. [10] [11] [12] It has also been described as featuring elements of black metal, [13] [14] shoegaze, [14] [15] post-rock [4] [16] and melodic hardcore. [16] [17] According to Kerrang! , the album's songs are established on a foundation composed of "surging riffs and a sense of constant forward momentum that’s as infused with the spirit of punk rock as it is the thunderous power of metal". [15] Expanding on the heavy and melodic tendencies of One Day All This Will End, [13] they feature fast drumbeats, [13] [15] melodic, tremolo-heavy guitar lines [15] [18] and a balance of clean singing and screamed vocals. [10]
The album's lyrics cover a variety of social and political topics. [6] [10] [19] Cherry wrote the lyrics in a direct and confrontational manner, [10] [13] [15] lacking any metaphoric and poetic ambiguity, "so a six-year-old could read the words and know exactly what I'm talking about and where I stand on [the] issues [addressed]". [20] [21] Cherry credited her experience writing for Terrorizer around the time of album's writing for inspiring its direct tone, to draw a contrast against to the "obscured" and "vague" lyrics of the bands she interviewed for the magazine. [21] She also credited journalist Caitlin Moran for "[inspiring] me to be much more open and direct about being a feminist [...] Through reading her work, I felt encouraged not to hold back my thoughts and feelings, and to put them into songs." [7] [22]
In a 2018 interview with Blocland, Cherry described her approach of writing the album's lyrics:
Whatever pissed me off that day, I wrote about it [...] Once I adopted this approach of just essentially focusing on one target per song then venting all my rage towards it, the lyrics came so quickly and naturally this time. I find I can’t really switch off my socio-political side, so it felt like the lyrical content was just bubbling away inside me, waiting to be released! It was an extremely cathartic process, as I didn’t really sit there refining my words or trying to write something that sounds mysterious. [23]
"Unpaid Intern" rallies against the "backwards, classist agenda of unpaid internships" and the exclusion of the working class from higher-skilled jobs, "not because you don’t have the appropriate skills, but because you are poor". [24] [25] In an interview with Astral Noize, Cherry said that whilst none of Svalbard's members had been unpaid interns themselves, she had been forced to turn down several companies offering them in the past. [26] "Revenge Porn" addresses the culture of blaming the victims of revenge porn and the shortcomings of UK laws in holding perpetrators accountable. [25] "Feminazi?!" is a response to those who use the pejorative term feminazi to vilify feminism. [25] It was inspired by a YouTube comment left on the video for Svalbard's song "Expect Equal Respect". [4] "Pro-Life?" covers the pro-life movement against abortion, [6] [25] which Cherry saw as "something that criminalises doctors, and to me, it doesn’t even seem to be about saving lives – it seems to be about patriarchy and oppressing women." [27]
"For the Sake of the Breed" criticizes the breeding of brachycephalic dogs for fashion, whilst other mongrels are abandoned in homeless shelters. [25] [28] "How Do We Stop It?" is an autobiographical account of Cherry's experience of being sexually assaulted at the Wacken Open Air festival when she was 18 years old. [4] [25] Having not talked about the experience publicly, she was inspired to after reading an article about Architects frontman Sam Carter, who stopped the band's performance at Lowlands in August 2017 to call out sexual harassment. [25] [29] Cherry has said that Svalbard will never perform the song live "because it still makes me feel so vulnerable". [23] "Try Not to Die Until You're Dead", the only "personal song" on the album, is about Cherry's health struggles after contracting a parasitic bug that left her stomach organs permanently damaged, and "suddenly having to fight very hard to keep on living, and feeling pathetically grateful for any morsel of support you receive when your life takes a turn for the worse". [4] [25] The song's title is a reference to the Japanese manga series Hunter × Hunter . [5] Similar to "Lily" on One Day All This Will End, [23] the instrumental track "Iorek" ends It's Hard to Have Hope with "straight-up, shimmering shoegaze", according to Kerrang!. [15] Cherry said that the song is "a final reminder that hope is always worth the fight in the end." [25]
It's Hard to Have Hope was named after a lyric in "Try Not to Die Until You're Dead". [7] [23] Cherry said that the lyric refers to her health struggles in the original context of the song, but that she and the other members of Svalbard also felt that it "surmised both the personal and the political outlook of the band". [23] The title was chosen after the band rejected one proposed by Cherry that was deemed to be too obvious in its feminist messaging. [7]
The album's cover artwork was drawn by Steve Kingscote, whom Svalbard discovered after he drew its members as dogs whilst they were working at their practice space. [30] It was stylistically inspired by Kentaro Miura's manga series Berserk , which Cherry was reading around the time of the album's writing, specifically his "dark and expressive" drawings of trees: "I wanted something similar for our artwork, to represent that same feeling of darkness and despair closing in." [5] [30] She noted, however, that the circle in the center of the cover "represents the unyielding hope at the center of everything." [5]
It's Hard to Have Hope was originally released through Holy Roar Records on 25 May 2018. [31] [32] The album was released in the United States through Translation Loss Records, an independent label run by an employee of Relapse Records (with whom Svalbard were originally in talks with about releasing the album in the US). [7] [32] It also became Svalbard's first album to be released in Japan, through Tokyo Jupiter Records. Cherry considered the band's signing with the label "a complete stroke of luck", as they had been considering touring Japan when the label contacted them. [7] In June 2022, Nuclear Blast Records acquired the worldwide rights to the album after Svalbard signed to the label. [33]
Svalbard supported Holy Roar labelmates OHHMS at a few shows in the United Kingdom in May 2018. [34] A more extensive tour of the United Kingdom and Europe would follow, including a performance at the 2018 ArcTanGent Festival. [35] They also supported La Dispute on some of their tour dates in August 2018. [9] In early 2019, bassist Adam Parrish left Svalbard and was replaced by Alex Heffernan, formerly of Pariso (who Svalbard recorded a split album with back in 2014). [20] [36] Although Heffernan had previously declined an offer to join the band a few years prior, he would express interest in doing so shortly before Parrish's departure. [20] [37] Afterwards, Svalbard performed at the 2019 Roadburn Festival as part of a Holy Roar Records showcase, [38] [39] before embarking on their first-ever tour of Japan in May 2019 with The Tidal Sleep. [40] Between 26 October and 1 November 2019, the band toured Europe again, this time supporting Victims. [41]

It's Hard to Have Hope received generally positive reviews from critics. Louise Brown of The Quietus called it a "powerful, poignant and critical" album for metal fans in 2018 that "should not be ignored". [14] Invisible Oranges head editor Ian Cory praised its "stirring [musical] conviction" and bluntness of its message, concluding: "you couldn’t ask for a better record to have in your corner when stepping into the ring with the world’s bullshit." [19] Britt Meißner of Ox-Fanzine similarly found that Svalbard's "passion and tears" was what made the album "special". [10]
Selecting it as their "Album of the Week", Olly Thomas of Kerrang! described the album as "the sound of a band fulfilling their potential, while maturing in unexpected ways" whilst remaining "utterly triumphant in the way its sonics snag your heart as its message engages your brain". [15] [42] Likewise, Metal Hammer 's Luke Morton said that Svalbard "have become masters of the build, allowing the music to expand and blossom into something more". [13] In an mixed-to-positive review from Decibel , Shane Mehling praised Svalbard's ability to mix melodic hardcore and post-rock together but noted that the album's songs "[seemed] constructed to fill both genre columns whether it's necessary or not", making the album "diluted and somewhat predictable" at points with its use of formula. Godflesh are an English industrial metal band from Birmingham. The group formed in 1982 under the original title O.P.D. but did not release any complete music until 1988 when Justin Broadrick and B. C. Green renamed the band and decided to use a drum machine for percussion. Melding heavy metal with industrial music and later with electronic music and dub, Godflesh's sound is widely regarded as a foundational influence on other industrial metal and post-metal acts and as significant to both experimental and extreme metal.
Spit is the debut studio album by Canadian heavy metal band Kittie, originally released on November 13, 1999, through Ng Records. Kittie were formed in 1996, and signed a four-album deal with Ng following their performances at the Canadian Music Week festival in March 1999. Recorded over nine days in May 1999 with producer Garth Richardson at EMAC Studios in London, Ontario, Spit is a nu metal album that incorporates various elements from several heavy metal subgenres, and its lyrical themes include sexism, hatred, ignorance, betrayal, bullying and life experiences. The album is Kittie's only release with their original line-up, featuring bassist Tanya Candler and guitarist Fallon Bowman; Candler was replaced by Talena Atfield, who appears on the cover of all subsequent reissues of the album.
Streetcleaner is the debut studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 13 November 1989 through Earache Records and was reissued with a second disc of previously unreleased material on 21 June 2010. The album is widely acclaimed by critics and is often cited as a landmark release in industrial metal; though not the genre's first release, Streetcleaner helped define what industrial metal would become.
Pure is the second studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 13 April 1992 through Earache Records. Though originally labeled only as industrial metal, the album has since been recognised as one of the earliest post-metal releases. Musically, Pure is rhythmically mechanical and features harsh guitars, with protracted songs and an abundance of deliberate repetition. Like much of Godflesh's music, it is regarded as particularly heavy and aggressive, and these elements helped it gain critical acclaim.
Imprint is the second studio album by American metal band Vision of Disorder, released on July 28, 1998, through Roadrunner Records. It was recorded between April 1 and April 19, 1998, with producer Dave Sardy. The album's title is a reference to a permanently scarring knife incident that happened to vocalist Tim Williams. The album's artwork is a hospital photo of William's injury, manipulated on the computer by guitarist Mike Kennedy.
We Have Come for Your Parents is the third studio album by American rock band Amen, released on October 31, 2000, through I Am Recordings and Virgin Records. The album was the band's second to be produced by Ross Robinson. The album was mixed and engineered by Mike Fraser at The Warehouse in Vancouver, BC. The title of the album refers to The Dead Boys album We Have Come for Your Children.
"Cherry Pie" is a song by the American glam metal band Warrant. It was released in late August 1990, as the lead single from the album of the same name. The song became a Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number 10 and also reached number 19 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. The song has been cited by many as a "hair metal" anthem.
Holy Roar Records was an independent record label run by Alex Fitzpatrick. The label began in January 2006 and put out its first release, the Phoenix Bodies album, Raise the Bullshit Flag in June 2006. Fitzpatrick originally joked that the name was derived from a vision he had while using the hallucinogen LSD. According to Fitzpatrick, the name “Holy Roar” was derived from a Torche song with the same title.
The Roadburn Festival is an annual music festival held each April in Tilburg, Netherlands. It was founded by Walter Hoeijmakers and Jurgen van den Brand in 1999, who ran a stoner rock blog of the same name.
The English industrial metal band Godflesh have released eight studio albums and six extended plays along with a number of singles, compilations and remix and live albums. The group formed in 1982 under the name Fall of Because, but they did not release any music until 1988 when Justin Broadrick and B. C. Green changed the project's name to Godflesh and recorded a self-titled debut EP. That EP, released through the independent label Swordfish, was met with underground success and has since been recognised as one of the first industrial metal releases, if not the first.

The Devil's Blood was a Dutch occult rock band from Eindhoven, formed in 2006. Their style is hard rock in the vein of Black Widow, Coven, Black Sabbath, and a plethora of 1970s underground progressive and psychedelic rock. Their sound has been described as "seductive, rather than aggressive" with female vocals, classical guitar leads, analog atmospherics and "vintage satanic hooks".

Formed in 2011 by co-lead vocalists and guitarists Serena Cherry and Liam Phelan with drummer Mark Lilley, the band's line-up has featured bassist Matt Francis since 2020. Primarily exhibiting a post-hardcore and post-metal sound, the band's style features elements of black metal, crust punk, post-rock and shoegaze.
Hellripper is a Scottish one-man black/speed metal band formed by James McBain in 2014. Cited musical influences include black metal bands such as Venom and Darkthrone; thrash metal bands Megadeth, Metallica and Sabbat; and punk-oriented bands like Motörhead and Anti-Cimex. When I Die, Will I Get Better? is the third studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 25 September 2020. Recorded in February 2020 with long-time producer Lewis Johns, the album incorporates more of a shoegaze-influenced sound in contrast to Svalbard's previous album It's Hard to Have Hope (2018), as well as more clean singing, vocal harmonies, and complex instrumental parts. Lyrically, it discusses themes of mental health, with a focus on depression, alongside feministic topics including domestic abuse, online sexism and objectification. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Alex Heffernan.

Noctule is a British musical project founded by Serena Cherry, best known as the lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist of Svalbard, in 2020. Launched as a personal creative outlet amidst the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, Cherry considered the project to be a return to her roots as a black metal solo artist, prior to forming Svalbard in 2011, with its video game-inspired lyrics contrasting with the aforementioned band's heavy subject matters.
Zetra are a British synth-rock duo from London, England. Formed in 2018, the band released several independent EPs and cassettes via Bandcamp before signing to Nuclear Blast Records in 2023. The band's eponymous debut album, Zetra, was released on 13 September 2024.
