The Weight of the Mask is the fourth studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 6 October 2023 through Nuclear Blast Records. It is the band's first album for the label, as well as their first with bassist Matt Francis. After initial writing sessions were hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, Svalbard began working on new material in April 2021, before recording the album in February 2023 with long-time producer Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House in Southampton. Developing from the sound of its predecessor When I Die, Will I Get Better? (2020), the album saw the band experiment with its sound, production, and instrumentation. Lyrically, it eschews the social and political themes of its previous albums, with a focus on mental health, anxiety, depression and love.
The Weight of the Mask debuted and peaked number 29 on the UK Independent Albums Chart and received praise for its songwriting, emotional lyrics and themes; Bandcamp Daily , Blabbermouth.net and Kerrang! considered it to be Svalbard's best album. The band supported the album with numerous festival appearances and headlining tours of Europe, Australia and Japan, alongside supporting tours with Cult of Luna, Enslaved and Alcest.
Svalbard began writing material for The Weight of the Mask soon after the recording of their third album, When I Die, Will I Get Better? , in early 2020. [1] [2] Writing was initially hindered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, [3] which prevented Svalbard from working on material in person, and co-lead vocalist and lead guitarist Serena Cherry said that it "took a while to find each other again, build a common creative bond and create synergies". [2] Guitarist and co-lead vocalist Liam Phelan stated that the pandemic nevertheless gave the band a creative push, helping bring out more of an emotional edge to Cherry's lyrics and his music. [4] On 24 April 2021, the band announced that they had started writing their fourth album. [5] Svalbard worked on material at their practice space in Bristol; although half of the band's members were split between there and London, they arranged to meet up on weekends instead of "[emailing] each other riffs". [6]
In June 2022, Svalbard were signed to Nuclear Blast Records by senior A&R rep Nathan Barley Phillips, a longtime fan of the band. [7] Cherry said that the label approached them following the success of When I Die, Will I Get Better?, and that their "vision for working with us seemed to really fit with what we wanted to do". [1] She described the signing as a "dream come true" for her, as most of the bands she was inspired by (including Nightwish, her favourite band) had released albums through the label. [8] [9] At the same time, Svalbard grew concerned that their material would be not be "good enough" for Nuclear Blast and live up to the acclaim of When I Die, Will I Get Better?. The band subsequently began to approach its songwriting more analytically than before, scrapping six songs worth—approximately half—of their material in the process. [1] [6]
In February 2023, Svalbard recorded The Weight of the Mask with long-time producer Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House in Southampton. [3] [8] Cherry stated that "When you've worked with a producer for so many years, you feel so comfortable fully expressing yourself in the studio", and that Johns provided her with "a safe space" to express her emotions, both musically and lyrically. [8] She provided Johns with Insomnium's Anno 1696 (2023) to use as a production reference during recording, citing its "clarity with the guitars [as] a huge benchmark for me". [1]
Musically, The Weight of the Mask has been primarily described as post-hardcore [10] [11] [12] and post-metal. [13] [14] Reviewers also highlighted elements from black metal, [10] [15] melodic death metal, [11] power metal, [11] metalcore, [15] post-rock [14] [15] and blackgaze [9] [12] across the album. Metal Hammer UK described the album as "simultaneously the prettiest and bleakest Svalbard have sounded to date". [16] The album retains the genre-combining style of When I Die, Will I Get Better?, [14] [15] whilst featuring more polished and modern-sounding production than its predecessor. [10] [14] BrooklynVegan felt that the album's "glossy" production added a "sleek exterior to [its] aggression and darkness." [15] Cherry said that the album features more technical guitar parts, segments forgoing reverb effects, [8] and synth pads, which Svalbard began using on their previous album. [17] The album also incorporates violins on tracks such as "Defiance" and "How to Swim Down", performed by Phelan. [18] [19] In an interview with Kerrang! , Cherry said she was inspired to incorporate violins after seeing Phelan perform with Morrow, and compared their use to My Dying Bride. [8] Svalbard had previously attempted incorporate violins into When I Die, Will I Get Better?, but found they "didn't sound right" for the album. [20] [21]
According to Bandcamp Daily , The Weight of the Mask is "the first Svalbard album that’s thematically focused entirely inward". [6] Its lyrics focus on themes of mental health, anxiety, depression and love, eschewing the social and political themes of their previous albums. [9] [10] [21] In an interview with Distorted Sound, Cherry said that where When I Die, Will I Get Better? predecessor was "the light at the end of the tunnel", The Weight of the Mask represented "the tunnel at the end of the light". [22] The album's lyrics are presented in a direct and blunt manner, [18] [23] and do not use metaphors. [9] Cherry believed that using this approach allowed for Svalbard's lyrics to better connect with people and make them feel less alone. [9] [12] [23] She attributed its lack of political lyrics to her exhaustion with the contemporary political situation in the United Kingdom, [9] and the fact she was "so consumed by [her] internal darkness" around the time of the album's writing. [6]
"Faking It" is about the problems that forced positivity can have on those who suffer from depression, who "can feel guilted into putting on a happy mask". [24] [25] "Eternal Spirits" was written as a tribute to deceased musicians within the metal community; the song was specifically dedicated to Joey Jordison, former drummer of Slipknot, who died in 2021. [26] Cherry described "November" as "sort-of anti-Christmas song – it's for everyone else out there who finds that time of year hard, when every other Christmas song is talking about how magical this time of year is." [25] The song features spoken word elements inspired by the Saturnus song "For Your Demons". [17] [25] Titled after the 2003 album of the same name by Antimatter, "Lights Out" details the struggle of reaching out "when you’re falling apart". [25] The song was originally written for When I Die, Will I Get Better? in 2019, but left off as Svalbard were unable to "piece it together effectively". [1]
"How to Swim Down" is about unrequited love; Cherry wrote the song from the perspective of a World of Warcraft healer to "illustrate this point, of selflessly pouring your energy into someone from a distance". [25] [27] The song also drew influence from "Misty's Song", from the Pokémon anime compilation album Pokémon 2.B.A. Master (1999). [20] Originally intended to be an instrumental bonus track, Johns helped Svalbard flesh the song out by encouraging them to add more instrumental and vocal layers. [28] The song was the band's first to feature solely clean vocals. [20] "Be My Tomb" is about "lovelessness and loneliness". Cherry was inspired to write the song after listening to "Empty Rooms" by Gary Moore. [25] "Pillar in the Sand" is about "something that outlasts everything else - when something has the same magical feeling every time you come back to it". [12] For Cherry, this was Fright Nights at Thorpe Park, which she has visited since she was a teenager; [25] she also helped compose music for the event's Creek Freak Massacre maze in 2019. [12] "To Wilt Beneath the Weight" is about the stresses associated with being a touring musician, [29] and being honest about "the dark reality of your demons". [25]
Svalbard "unofficially" began the promotional cycle for The Weight of the Mask with the release of the album's lead single, "Eternal Spirits", on 27 February 2023. [20] [26] After the single's release, the band joined Cult of Luna for a tour of Europe from 17 March to 31 March 2023. [30] Svalbard then played at a number of festivals in the summer of 2023, starting with the Portals Festival in London on 28 May 2023, [31] and Hellfest in Clisson, France, on 17 June 2023. [32] [33] [34] On 12 July 2023, Svalbard announced the release of The Weight of the Mask and released "Faking It" as the album's second single. [24] Its music video was inspired by "Everybody's Fool" by Evanescence. [2] On 15 August 2023, "How to Swim Down" was released as the third single. [19] Its release was coupled with an animated music video, directed by Boy Tillkens and storyboarded by Cherry. [19] [35] The album was released on 6 October 2023, [24] and debuted at number 29 on the UK Independent Albums Chart and number 79 on the Scottish Albums Chart. [36]
Following the album's release, Svalbard embarked on a second tour of Europe between 14 October and 21 October 2023. [37] On 31 January 2024, the band released a live music video for "To Wilt Beneath the Weight", filmed at the 2023 Beyond the Redshift Festival at the O2 Forum in London. [38] [29] Between 6 March and 24 March 2024, Svalbard and Wayfarer supported Enslaved on their first European club tour since 2018. [39] Between 18 May and 20 May 2024, Svalbard toured Japan with Kokeshi, [40] before embarking on their first tour of Australia between 23 May and 26 May 2024, supported by RUN. [41] [42] [43] [44] Svalbard are currently on tour with Doodeskader opening for Alcest on the European leg of their Les Chants de l'Aurore tour, which takes place from 13 November and 14 December 2024. Emma Wilkes of Kerrang! called the album Svalbard's "masterpiece" and awarded the album a perfect 5/5 score, praising its emotional weight and directness. [18] Mia Hughes of Bandcamp Daily similarly praised the album as Svalbard's best, calling it "a moving account of battling through the lowest depths of depression [...] and proof that Svalbard is an established, reliable force in the metal scene." [6] Ox-Fanzine 's Roman Eisner praised its "clearly formulated" lyrics and well-illustrated portrayal of depression, as well as its variety. [49] Blabbermouth.net 's Dom Lawson said that the album "rocks with a vigor and vitality that could never be anything but uplifting" and considered it to be Svalbard's best album "by far". [11]
Lothar Gerber of Metal Hammer Germany highlighted the album's "numerous guitar melodies and emotional harmonies" while singling out Matt Francis for his performance on bass. [48] Danni Leivers of Metal Hammer UK said that its balance of heaviness and vulnerability showcased the extent of Svalbard's songwriting developments from When I Die, Will I Get Better?, stating: "The album hangs together cohesively and purposefully, an exercise of extremes that never offers answers, but that stands as a stunning monument to the human experience." [16] Thomas Mahnke of Metal.de felt that its "well thought out" songwriting should "open [Svalbard] up to a new audience without alienating older listeners." [14] Steve Loftin of Dork found that the band's overt confidence and diversity "[gave] armament to [its] hefty subject matter", and claimed that it boosted their status as "one of Britain’s great new heavy bands [...] one-hundred fold". [47]
The Weight of the Mask was ranked at number 12 on Kerrang!'s list of the "50 best albums of 2023", [51] and at number 6 on Metal Hammer's equivalent list. [52] Metal.de named it the best post-rock/metal album of 2023. [53] The album won the award for "Best Metalgaze Album" at the 2023 Metal Storm Awards, [54] [55] while its cover (by Hestor Aspland) was nominated in the "Best Album Artwork" category at the Heavy Music Awards 2024. Vol. 3: is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot, released on May 25, 2004, by Roadrunner Records. A special edition, containing a bonus disc, was released on April 12, 2005. It is the band's only album produced by Rick Rubin. Following the band's tour to promote its second album in 2002, speculation regarding the future began. Some band members had already been involved in side projects including Murderdolls, To My Surprise, and the reformation of Stone Sour. In 2003, Slipknot moved into The Mansion to work on the album. Initially, the band was unproductive; lead vocalist Corey Taylor was drinking heavily. Nevertheless, the band managed to write more than enough material for a new album. Vol. 3 is credited as Slipknot's first to incorporate more traditional, melodic song structures, guitar solos and acoustic instruments.
Machine Head is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Robb Flynn, who remains the only original member of the band. Machine Head's aggressive musicianship made it one of the pioneering bands in the new wave of American heavy metal. Its current lineup comprises Flynn, bassist Jared MacEachern and drummer Matt Alston. Bassist Adam Duce, guitarists Logan Mader, Ahrue Luster and Phil Demmel, and drummers Tony Costanza, Chris Kontos and Dave McClain are former members of the band; Mader and Kontos toured with the band in 2019 and 2020 as part of the 25th anniversary tour for its first album, Burn My Eyes (1994).
Spit is the debut studio album by Canadian heavy metal band Kittie, originally released on November 13, 1999, through Ng Records. Kittie were formed in 1996, and signed a four-album deal with Ng following their performances at the Canadian Music Week festival in March 1999. Recorded over nine days in May 1999 with producer Garth Richardson at EMAC Studios in London, Ontario, Spit is a nu metal album that incorporates various elements from several heavy metal subgenres, and its lyrical themes include sexism, hatred, ignorance, betrayal, bullying and life experiences. The album is Kittie's only release with their original line-up, featuring bassist Tanya Candler and guitarist Fallon Bowman; Candler was replaced by Talena Atfield, who appears on the cover of all subsequent reissues of the album.

Sleep Token are a British metal band from London, formed in 2016. The group are an anonymous, masked collective led by a frontman using the moniker Vessel. They have been categorised under many different genres, including alternative metal, post-rock/metal, progressive metal, indie rock/pop, and djent. After self-releasing their debut extended play (EP) One in 2016, the band signed with Basick Records and issued a follow-up, Two, the next year. The group later signed with Spinefarm Records and released their debut full-length album Sundowning in 2019, which was followed in 2021 by This Place Will Become Your Tomb. A third album, Take Me Back to Eden, was released in May 2023.
Wargasm (stylised in all caps and sometimes known as Wargasm (UK)) are a British electronic rock duo from London. The band formed in 2018 by Sam Matlock, who had previously performed as part of Dead!, and Milkie Way, who had previously photographed their concerts and played bass for Barns Courtney. The band released several standalone singles before making headlines in 2021 over incidents at that year's Heavy Music Awards and after a performance at Scala. Their 2022 mixtape Explicit: The Mixxxtape charted at No. 19 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart and appeared on Loudwire's "Best Rock + Metal Debut Albums of 2022", while their 2023 album Venom charted at No. 88 in the UK Albums Chart.
When I Die, Will I Get Better? is the third studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 25 September 2020. Recorded in February 2020 with long-time producer Lewis Johns, the album incorporates more of a shoegaze-influenced sound in contrast to Svalbard's previous album It's Hard to Have Hope (2018), as well as more clean singing, vocal harmonies, and complex instrumental parts. Lyrically, it discusses themes of mental health, with a focus on depression, alongside feministic topics including domestic abuse, online sexism and objectification. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Alex Heffernan.

The album was recorded in September 2017 at The Ranch Production House in Southampton with producer Lewis Johns. Primarily displaying a post-hardcore and post-metal sound, it expands on the heaviness and melodic tendencies of their debut album One Day All This Will End (2015). Its lyrics address various social and political topics including unpaid internships, revenge porn, feminism, abortion, animal welfare, sexual assault and long-term illness. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Adam Parrish.
Church Road Records is a British independent record label, founded in 2017. It is co-run by Sammy Urwin and Justine Jones, both of Employed to Serve. Originally founded as a mail-order distribution label, it was established as a proper record label in September 2020.
Noctule is a British musical project founded by Serena Cherry, best known as the lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist of Svalbard, in 2020. Launched as a personal creative outlet amidst the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, Cherry considered the project to be a return to her roots as a black metal solo artist, prior to forming Svalbard in 2011, with its video game-inspired lyrics contrasting with the aforementioned band's heavy subject matters.
Zetra are a British synth-rock duo from London. Formed in 2018, the band released several independent EPs and cassettes via Bandcamp before signing to Nuclear Blast Records in 2023. The band's eponymous debut album, Zetra, was released on 13 September 2024.
Les Chants de l'Aurore is the seventh studio album by French post-black metal band Alcest, released on 21 June 2024 by Nuclear Blast.
